The small gardens allow you to create a garden you’d love to walk through yourself, complete with plants, benches, forest creatures and animal life. You can devise clever themes or designs that reflect your personality and style, telling your personal story with plants.

While not a new concept, gardening in miniature is quickly becoming one of the most popular gardeninghobbies. It can be a place to experiment, play and express your creativity and can be created on any scale you choose using bird baths, bowls or wheelbarrows to hold your work.

Meadow View carries a full selection of miniature garden plants, accents, fairies, gnomes and other interesting accessories. You can create your own mini garden or purchase a kit to get started. Visit our enchanting in-store mini garden display and sign up for a workshop.

Each year our staff chooses a ‘Proven Performer’ annual plant that thrives with minimal care and maintenance. These varieties are tested and proven in our landscape display gardens and in our own gardens. This year, the staff at Meadow View has chosenSalvia guaranitica ‘Black and Blue.’ This plant makes a bold statement with its cobalt blue blooms and almost-black stems, growing to amature height of 36-48 inches. Blooming relentlessly all season from early summer to frost, ‘Black and Blue’ is drought-tolerant once estab-lished, making it an excellent choice for containers and flower beds.

‘Black and Blue’ is one of the best hummingbird magnets you can grow and countless tiny fliers will flock to the masses of blooms all summer long. Although Salvia ‘Black and Blue’ is considered an annual in our area, it will overwinter in protected areas. For optimum performance we recommendgrowing ‘Black and Blue’ in a sun to part sun location in well-drained soil. Salvia ‘Black and Blue’ will be available for purchase beginning in late April in our annuals department.

Previous Proven Performers at Meadow View include Petunia ‘Blanket’,Celosia ‘New Look’, Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’ Begonia ‘Dragon Wing’,and Euphorbia ‘Hip Hop.’

• Delosperma Fire Spinner• Poppy – Miss Piggy • Buddleia Evil Ways• Echinacea Pow Wow Wild Berry• Chrysanthemum Matchsticks• Echinacea Hot Summer• Echinacea Flame Thrower• Iberis Absolutely Amethyst

Growing your plants in containers is the most versatile of gardening options. Containers can be any size, color or shape, can be situated depending on the plants’ varying sun or shade light requirements, and contain creative and unusual foliage and color combinations.

Moveable and easy to maintain, containers are a perfect low-effort way to garden.

As with anything new, we can only relay theinformation that our suppliers provide. We do as much research as possible prior to growing these plants to assure that they will be hardy, and perform as described. Weather permitting, perennials should be available in late April.

Most annuals will be available starting in mid to late April. Limited quantities of these new varieties available.

In Meadow View’s container gardening greenhouse, resident expert Barb Willens has plants that are divided according to their sun/shade needs and function (what she calls ‘thrillers, fillers and spillers’). There are many pre-planted container gardens to choose from and planting “recipes” for the do-it-yourselfer. Pottery is available in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes. Be sure to join us at one of our container gardening workshops.

This year’s container gardening trends include herbs, vegetables, terrariums, succulents, vertical gardening, mini gardens and giant tropical planters. Tangerine is the Pantone color for 2012.

“Containers, unlike major landscape investments, allow for experimentation, so have at it,” says Barb. “If a color or texture doesn’t end up looking the way you’d hoped, just pop it out and try again.”

The Perfect GiftIf you’re trying to find a gift for a friend or loved one who’s hard to buy for,we have the solution at Meadow View - Gift Cards!

Gift Cards are available in any denomination, $10 and up.Our gift cards have no expiration date and no maintenance or processing fees.

We’re excited to provide a great selection of locally grown nursery stock again this season. Our plant loving staff has chosen a diverse selection of trees and shrubs for your gardening pleasure.

Trees and shrubs are the backbone of anylandscape, providing year ’round benefits. These“anchor” plants not only provide shade, wind breaks and beauty, they also add value to any home, by improving curb appeal. In the winter, when your annuals are gone, and your perennials are dormant, you will still enjoy the shapes and structure of shrubs in your landscape.

Trees and shrubs filter the air, providing clean oxy-gen for us to breathe, and their root systems filter pollutants from our ground water. And, unlike cars, computers, or couches, trees increase in value the minute they leave the nursery and continue to increase as they mature.
