SLIMMING & ANTI-CELLULITE COSMETIC NOVEL INGREDIENT

INTRODUCTION As the anti-cellulite and slimming cosmetic market sector is constantly in search of new active and novel ingredients. Terminalia arjuna is a large South Indian tree which exudes an oleo-resinous secretion, when it is more than 75 years old, from its trunk’s and branch stem’s bark fissures. These resinous exudates is collected and soaked in mineral spring water and subsequently cleaned of extraneous plant materials like bark, etc, then dried into a solid mass. The solidified resin is dissolved in hydroalcoholic solution and clarified standardized for optimum biomolecular activity into the above cosmetic ingredient. Traditionally, the solid resin is dissolved in palm wine and applied on abdominal stretch marks, hips, thighs and arms ‘fat induced bulges’.

Terminalia arjuna resins Basic function of Terminalia arjuna resin exudate is to ensure correct energy working of the plant cell--- some of the plant fats are transformed with other surplus fat being stored in the plant cells. When exposed to stress, cold and weak sunshine, the plant cells used the accumulated store of surplus fats and release them as resinous exudate. The active principles of these functions (lipolysis) are the sterols and their derivatives. These active sterols are abundantly contained within the resinous exudate of aged and old Terminalia arjuna tree. The active sterol derivatives function a vital part in lipolysis metabolism and play an important role in the breakdown of excessive fat stored in the cells thereby facilitating removal of lipolysed fat.

IN-VITRO ASSAYS & RESULTS In in-vitro assays using cultured human cells (adipocytes) of epidermis, and derma cells in parallel assays with cultured Terminalia arjuna cells; the following function was prominently noted in the lipolysis metabolism with Terminalia arjuna extract: (Lipolytic Effect & Activity study) The sterol rich extract, when added (dosage: 0.1% to 5%) to both the human and plant cultures, resulted to: Breakdown and digestion of the accumulated fats Extrusion of the lipolysed fats from the cells, and Prevention of fat accumulation into the newly and normally balanced cells.

The sterol- rich Terminalia arjuna extract acts as a signal on the receptors and hormonal transporter within the cell to prevent new accumulation and storage of surplus fats. The extract is known to stimulate the fibroblast during the lipolysis action in the surrounding connective tissues. These tissues undergo re-organization giving back its tone and elasticity. The firming elastic effect brought about by these reactions is very pronounced and restoring the normal shape without the consequent sagging of the newly balanced cells shows the effectiveness.



IN-VIVO STUDIES AND RESULTS Human in-vivo tests were conducted on 28 persons of 19-48 years. Comparison was made between an inert cosmetic base, which was applied on the left thigh, and Campo Terminalia arjuna extract 10% Addition level into an inert cosmetic base on the right thigh. Application for both test substance was twice daily for 36 days duration. Measurement (as devised by INSERM Institute, Paris, France) was made in 2 methods: Echography – involving 2 dimensional exploration of biological tissue using ultrasound propagation speed. Result: Reduction of 3.5 mm to 12.4 mm were found in 14 subjects (representing slight to good Results) Centimeter measurement – involving physical measurement via calibrated tape. Result: Reduction of > 3.3 mm were found in 3 subjects (considered as slight efficacy) Reduction of 5.1 mm were found in 9 subjects (considered as good efficacy) Reduction of 11.5 mm were found in 2 subjects (considered as very good efficacy)

1.5% Campo Terminalia arjuna extract is considered as a substantive sterol induced lipolytic activator which acts as a messenger to adrenaline receptor located on the adipocytes . These sterol molecules use the epidermis and the nerve ending located at a certain distance as a communication tool to provoke controlled lipolysis and anti-cellulite actions. The warm feeling on the skin obtained with Terminalia arjuna plays an important in the control of lipolysis and anti-cellulite activity. Adipocytes store lipids and provide fatty acids by lipolysis according to the environmental energy needs. Campo Terminalia arjuna extract enhances and controls physiological amines, normally released during stressful conditions by different polypeptide hormones; via an induced stimulated stress-oriented environmental signal. In this stimulated condition created/induced by Campo Terminalia arjuna extract, specific release surplus fats signals are mimic by the Terminalia sterols to the adipocytes’ adrenergic receptors to breakdown the surplus fat deposits and activate removal of the lipolytic fats from the cells; the adrenergic receptors and other metabolites released during lipolysis are ‘instructed signal’ to normalized and balanced the newly surplus fats removed cells into a regular shaped firm cellular environment in combination with the surrounding connective tissues.

The recommended dosage is 1.5 – 5% to obtain the desired quick results in a 30 days period. The Terminalia arjuna extract is recommended to be used with the Terminalia arjuna eau d’ cologne as 2 separate cosmetic products. Background: Tamil siddhar Bogar was the founder of the Shao-Lin Temple (Bamboo Grove Temple) in China, whose history can be traced back 1200 years. Siddhar Bogar was said to prescribe the rinds of the Gorga fruit to the overweight and obese daughter of the Chinese emperor, who in return as a sign of gratitude, granted Bogar the land, known as Bamboo Grove, on the mountaintop where he was to build the Shao lin temple. This was glorified as the birthplace of the oriental martial arts and popularized in the West by Bruce Lee in the 1970’s. Gorga has a history of use in China and India for weight and obesity control and for traditional skin care remedies faithfully recorded in the annals of Chinese Imperial families of various dynasties. The name Gorga was given to honour another Siddhar, Siddhar Gorrakkar, author of the famous book Malai Vaggadam (Malai- hills or mountains; Vagaddam – literary prose: hence Prose of the Hills of the Bills, circa 11

th century). This book is a dictionary of Siddha materia medica, namely trees, shrubs,

herbs, minerals and other natural products, describing in vivid detail distance from the nearest established human settlements, topography of the habitat, botanical or morphological features of the material, selectivity of the favoured soil conditions for plants, assessment of the medicinal, therapeutic properties of the material, its bioavailability, and its compatibility in complex multi-component formulae, dosage, application levels and duration of treatment, etc. This book is famous for making its knowledge available to the common people, for in as much as other Siddhar’s work were usually allegorical in nature and written in difficult prose, usually only understood by other Siddhars, Siddha physicians and literary scholars. Totally incomprehensible to the common Tamil folk, this volume was written in simple terms that made much of its contents available to, and understood by, these people, offering them availability of Siddha knowledge on the use of natural products for preventive health and as a treatment for many diseases and conditions.

Application and dosage recommendations:

Gorga has undergone human clinical trials in USA. It is known to have profound anorectic action and its active principal, (-) hydroxycitric acid inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids by inhibiting ATP citrate lyase, the cytoplasmic enzyme which catalyses the conversion of the citrate to acetyl coenzyme A and oxalo-acetate.



Citrate + CoA + ATP-Acetyl CoA + Oxaloacetate + ADP + P The acetyl CoA is required for lipid (fatty acid) biosynthesis The active ingredient that makes this possible is (-) hydroxycitric acid. Unlike citric acid which is widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom, hydroxycitric acid is an organic acid that is unique to the Garcinia species, particularly Garcinia cambogia. This particular isomer (-) hydroxycitric acid is a naturally occuring and biologically active form of HCA which exhibits the property of initiating viable weight loss. It is safer in use than citric acid and does not exhibit direct central nervous system (CNS) suppression. Campo Gorga PG is a novel form of HCA that can be absorbed by and penetrate the skin in cosmoceutical formulations. At cellular level, HCA has been shown to inhibit ATP-citrate lyase, thus signaling a decrease of fat and cholesterol formation and accumulation in the cells. The pathway at cellular level requires essentially the same signals as that of the gastro-hepto-CNS--- the inhibition of ATP-citrate lyase. This signal triggers an additional or redirectional glycogen synthesis and in turn increase The glycoreceptor stimulation and amplifies the signaling of sufficient fat and cholesterol deposits already accumulated in the cells. Previously accumulated fats are then preferentially consumed during normal metabolism, without new fats being formed of accumulated on the cellular region subject to the therapeutic applications. As (-) hydroxycitric acid in Campo Gorga is not a CNS stimulant but a peripheral acting agent, it does not enter the brain or CNS or cause other side effects such as insomnia, nervousness, depression, hypertension or rapid heart rate. Campo Gorga (-) hydroxycitric acid extract is a decolorized extract containing not less than 5% (-) hydroxycitric acid.
