PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Friends:

It's a privilege and honor for me to serve as the President of our Temple. Thanks to the Board of Governors, the Board of Trustees, many volunteers & community members, our priests and the manager for their dedicated support in the operation and maintenance of the Temple.

We completed several projects during this past year. Here are the highlights of the major accomplishments:

• We completed and inaugurated Shri Parvesh Swani

Vidyamandir- the new Bal-Vihar Building. It is now furnished and networked for computers on every desk. The building is also equipped with internet connection.

• We celebrated many poojas, festivals and functions like Pongal/Sankranti, Holi, Maha Shivratri, Ugaadi/Gudi Padva, Ramanavami, Shrinathji Patotsav, Murugan Annual Celebration, Balaji Kalyanam, Temple Anniversary, Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navsmaran, Navratri, Diwali, Ayyappa Pooja, Gandhi Jayanti, and Annual Graduation with ever increasing devotee presence.

• We built the new stage in the Community Hall with wall to wall curtain, new carpet, new sound system, and with many other improvements.

• We repainted the Community Hall, both lobbies, and office area with brighter colors.

• On the outside, we improved aesthetics of the Temple with the landscaping, tree trimming, and mulching, with the help of many devoted volunteers.

The Board has also approved the budget for following works:

• Canopy over the outside doors to the Community Hall

• Concrete walkway around the Community Hall

• New sofas in the Community Hall Lobby

• Replacing numbers of chairs in the Community Hall

• Machine polishing all tiles in the Temple, steam cleaning the carpets, and cleaning all glass windows

• Landscaping and aesthetically enhancing the slope between the Temple and the School Building

• Cleaning and upgrading the Library to use it as a meeting room, and dressing room for wedding renters

It’s a long list of work done & planned. Thanks for your support.

We have five long-term goals:

1. Build a sound financial foundation for the Temple 2. Maintain harmony within the community

3. Prepare for transition to the next generation

4. Support the needy in the community around us

5. Continue with Inter-faith dialog

Please join us to meet these goals.

I know you all spread your generosity in many different charities, but I urge you to keep our Temple on the top of your list. Our goal of providing the community with their spiritual, social and cultural needs appears to be fulfilling. We want to continue with this goal. Your generosity will make it easier to achieve this goal. May God bless you.

Thank you, Nagji Sureja

Bal Vihar News School-Year: 2013-2014

Open House & First Day of Class Sunday, September 8, 2013

The 15th year of the Bal-Vihar program will start on Sunday, September 8, 2013. Limited space is still available on a first come, first serve basis. If you are interested, please download the application at www.BlatimoreTemple.org and mail it to the Temple address.

We will host an Open House and Orientation in the Community Hall on the first day of the school year, Sunday, September 8, from 9 am to 10 am. All new Bal-Vihar parents are requested to attend along with their children. For further information contact: Jitesh Parikh (410-876-0365), or Hari Razdan (410-833-4290).

Annual Day Celebration We started the Bal-Vihar program in 1999 and held our first Annual Day ceremony in 2000. The program started with a few dedicated parents getting together to plant the seeds of knowledge for our children. The program has been very successful and registration for the 2012-13 Balvihar-year reached a maximum of 200 students.

With inauguration of Shri Parvesh Swani Vidyamandir we have addressed the space issue for the current level of enrollment of about 200 students. The Temple has spent more than $500,000 for this project, which has depleted Temple’s operating cushion. We need your financial support to replenish it. On behalf of the Bal-Vihar program, we ask everyone to donate generously, which furthers the education of the next generation of Indian-Americans.

On June 8, 2013 we celebrated the 14th Bal-Vihar Annual Day, and this fall we will start our 15th year of the Bal-Vihar Program. Here are some of the noteworthy accomplishments of the 2012-2013 Bal Vihar School-year:

• We had 211 students enrolled - our highest ever.

• We moved junior and senior classes to the new building in December 2012.

• We had 20 students teaching/volunteering in the program compared to 23 last year.

• We formalized Bal Vihar Student Volunteer Program.

• More parents than ever are involved in the program.

• We have web-based Hindi and Gujarati learning programs.

• The Bal-Vihar parents donated over $40,000 for the Bal-Vihar Class room project at the Vastu Pujan for the new building.

To date 1,806 students have been enrolled in the program. We always look for new ideas to improve the program. If you have any suggestions for making the program better, please send us an email at [email protected].

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Greater Baltimore Temple’s Board of Governors, and Board of Trustees for their support. They have not only supported the program but have donated generously to make the program successful.

We appreciate the hard work of our coordinators, teachers, parents, volunteers, subcommittee chairs and especially of the students. As a Community Service we continued our celebration of Gandhi Jayanti by packing lunch bags for the area soup kitchens, and by supporting the Temple’s Annadata program. Most importantly, we celebrated our culture and had fun along the way with the Ganesh Pooja, the Diwali celebration, the Saraswati Pooja, the Holi celebration, and the Annual Picnic. --- Jitesh Parikh, Hari Razdan

Congratulations to all the 2013 Graduates!

The 12th Annual Graduation Pooja and Celebration was conducted in a grand manner on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at the Greater Baltimore Temple. Many high school and college graduates from the congregation, along with their families and friends, participated in the Saraswati Pooja conducted by Pandits Joshiji and Muraliji for continued success for the graduates. This was followed by felicitation of the graduates by the GBT President, Nagji Sureja. He congratulated the graduates and wished them well in their educational journey. The keynote speaker was one of our own youngsters: Attorney Chitta Mallik. He is an NFL agent, and works for Perennial Sports, a law firm in Washington, DC. He urged the graduates to chase their dreams even if they have to choose non-traditional career paths. He shared how he chose his own career by combining his passion for sports with his legal career. He urged the graduates to keep their strong family ties and the connections with the community. The GBT- Tamasa Mallik Memorial Scholarship for this year was awarded to Kushal Byatnal during the Graduation ceremony. The graduates were introduced by the MC: Meghana Annadata. Tej Vora, a high school graduate, spoke on behalf of the graduates. Srinivasa Raja provided crisp and clear photos as he does every year. The program ended with the lunch provided by India Palace. Deepti & Raj Razdan, Kali Mallik, Pandit Joshiji, Pandit Muraliji, Bhupendra Mehta, Hem Shukla, Meeta Raikar, Bharti Razdan, and Geetha Raja worked hard on the Graduation Pooja Committee to put the program together.
