Management Lessons from a KarmYogis Life

Gandhi is considered as one of the most influential leaders. Without anyofficial position, power or money, from humble beginnings he gained world

prominence, helped achieve freedom and left a lasting legacy for us all.

Many of Gandhis core principles are remarkably relevant in the realm of

    leadership competencies and self-development.

    Lesson 1: Continuous learning and

improvementGandhi always told that if two of his sentences

contradicted each other, please accept the second one

and forget the first one. This reflects

    learning and growth mindset

    anticipation of followersneeds

rigid consistency was NOT one of his traits

Lesson 2: Proactively identifying barriers to

    make sustainable change

    Once a journalist asked Gandhi

what was the biggest problem that

India faced? He expected Gandhi to

say slavery or British rule or

    pervasive poverty. But Gandhi said

    it was callousnessof intellectuals.

Gandhi had a long term vision of

building a sustainable society andnot just getting independence.

    Lesson 3: Be open-minded

    Always keep things

    in perspective. Do

    not dismiss other or

    anything- big orsmall- without

    giving a try. We

    never know where

the next useful ideamight come from.

    Lesson 4: Grass-root level contacts

A leader has to see that not many layers of hierarchies

are created between him or her and the people at the

lowest rung; and thepeoplesvoice does not go unheard

and doesnt get distorted to the extent of even belying

    the truth.

Lesson 5: Emphasis on self-awareness and

    discipline

As you grow in self awareness, you will betterunderstand why you feel what you feel and why

you behave as you behave. Self discipline is the

training of your mind to control perceived

harmful urges until a satisfactory solution has

    been sought.

Lesson 8: Make time your ally

Business communication with the advent of technologyemails,

video conferences, mobile forces us to take a decision instantly.

We have become slave 24 X7 with smart phones and laptops. A

instantaneous reflexive response without proper thought andreflection is a sure recipe of a mistake or mishap waiting to happen.

This instinct to respond urgently do not enable us to persuade,

innovate or be creative. Also to be on toes for 24 X 7 results in

stress, resentment to those whom are making demands and fatigue.

A delayed well thought out answer is any day better than a rapid

    poor solution.

Learn to trust time rather than resent it. .

    Lesson 9: Emotional Intelligence

Gandhiji overcame fear , anger & panic.

He once said Patience & perseverance can

    overcome mountains.

HR managers need to have patience,

    control anger while giving training,

    grievance handling & counseling.

    Lesson 10: Leadership by example

    Gandhiji always taught only those

    things which he himself practiced.

    Today HR managers should have

    hands on experience of process

    followed in all departments before

giving training to employees.Especially in sectors like retail, BPO

& hospitality it is a must.
