• Thanks for the privilege of the floor and a warm welcome for this presentation.• As a mother of 4 young children caring for health and environment, I experienced
a vision riding my bicycle to work (half an hour there and half an hour back home).
• I have never been happier in my life because of this!
• The idea is easy, simple and will bring joy to everyone. Ring‐Ring advocates rewarding a healthy choice: Reward each BikeMile 5 times (of which one is with game elements).
• In The Netherlands we have a huge amount of cyclists and in the rest of the world bicycling will become more popular every year.
• The urbanisation trend will continue and only works when cities become more attractive and liveable (clean, accessible, green).
• My eldest son opened my eyes for the beauty of nature. When he was 1 years old he could watch an ant for an hour.
• A question to you: please raise your hands if you have been on a bicycle this past month? If not and if you do have time, please rent one and cycle around in Amsterdam.

• 90% of our brain is active, however we do not notice this.
• With 400 billion incoming bits per second which our brain processes, we filter out a lot and we alter and generalize what we already know. We consciously experience 2000 bits.
• People who walk outside with their dogs, bicycle, run, experience very often Albert Einstein’s quote: “I thought of that while riding my bicycle”.
• That is because most things we feel, see, hear, smell and taste is hidden in our 90% unconscious part of the brain and gets activated when we do things we do not have to think about, like running, walking, cycling, OUTSIDE (in nature) with a certain repetition (let’s say 30 minutes).
• This actually happened to me! And since then I read those experiences everywhere: from artists to mathematicians.
• Was I happy with that Einstein quote about this … and he was riding a bicycle!
• Because that is what Ring‐Ring is all about! Everyone can cycle! It is easy to learn, fun and not expensive

• I will explain Ring‐Ring, the purpose, the triple health element and the incentives of which gamification is one.
• I also want to share with you the following: AI‐WEIWEI a Chinese artist, exhibitedin TATE MODERN over a million of handcrafted porcelain Sunflower seeds.
• This piece of art symbolises: Each individual choice and action towards a healthy clean and social world WILL change the way our society will look like in the future
• My personal belief is that we are in the middle of a transition, where people together join forces and help to change the world for the better. A chance for corporations and governments to innovate towards what people want with focus on energy instead of money.
• This conference is an example of a very interesting joined effort

• More and more obese people/children
• Health‐care costs rocketing sky high
• Burned‐out people at work, depressive people,
• Air pollution ruining our lungs.
• Hours of congestion every day.
• Even in the Netherlands: 50% of the people jump in a car for distances under 4 miles and 60% lives within 8 miles from work. This is an excellent bicycle ride.
• And this does not have to be this way, thanks to our cycle infrastructure and the happy cyclists.

![Page 5: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
• Yes, dear people the bicycle is a simple solution to some of the world’s most complicated problems.
• In the Netherlands we already have a huge amount of cyclists and 18.000.000 bikes! More than there are people!
• Because cycling is so normal and we already have so many, it became our blind spot.
• Ring‐Ring turns it around: Want what we have. Since what we have is great! And can serve as an inspiring example for other countries, cities, areas!
• I will outline the benefits of the choice to commute with a bike instead of public transport or by car.

![Page 6: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
• Using a bike is silent, clean and the energy comes from the person on it.
• All three: climate, environment and health are covered here.
6
![Page 7: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
• People cycling can easily talk to each other, stop, help people with questions on the street.
• The infrastructure space for cyclists is a lot less, so there is more public space for nature (trees and plants) and pedestrians.
• The greener the public space in cities, the healthier people are. KMPG (our hosts) calculated health care savings of more then 100 million euro and a lowered illness rate for employees. Put it differently; healthy, productive people in the organisation.
• Estimates show that urbanisation is continuing and 70% of the people will live in cities. We need quality space for them!

• More and more results show that retail turnover profits most when the public space is a joy to be in.
• On Ninth Avenue, where the city of New York has installed protected bike lanes, businesses from 23rd Street to 31st Street have seen a 49 percent increase in retail sales, compared with a borough‐wide average of 3 percent over the same period, the report said.

• A kick for free, not 1 but at least 5 each ride.
• The colours of the sky, the wind in my hair, the birds singing their songs.
• What have Bhutan and the Netherlands in common? An enormous hapiness factor where health is one of the biggest factors.
• Hope you are convinced that the bicycle can make the world a better place
9
![Page 10: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
• Four parties heavily benefit from cyclists. They can nudge the choice for a cycleride.
• Every 1€ spent on cycling infrastructure will save them 8€ in return. The benefits I already mentioned. The four players are:
1. Health Care2. Local government3. Employers 4. Retail

• The november/december issue of the magazine The Optimist published an interesting article about changing the health CARE system into a HEALTH system.
• The current system does not support people’s own responsibility for makinghealthy choices.
• Their vision is actually in line with the concept of Ring‐Ring. I was happy to read this and wanted to share this with you today
11
![Page 12: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
• The way to be healthy is in a way quite simple and connected with each other.
• The hapiness triangle:1. Eat fresh local food (mostly vegetables) 2. Each day move around for at least 30 minutes3. Do it outside (which all is nature to me, also the city) – Time perspective changes
12
![Page 13: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
• This summer the pilot started rewarding Bicycle Miles in a local urban area in Amsterdam. This area is 10 years young today. Very special.
• The Bicycle Miles for this pilot are rewarded 3 times:
• 1) (local) government – For each mile a fund is issued for an initiative of a citizen. We just cycled 10.000 BikeMiles for €2000 together to set up a local library.
• 2) Retail/ shops – discounts in their shops for 50 bikemiles: Actually a healthy choice is worth money!
• 3) That is where you come in: GAMIFICATION. Who cycles most, often, longest, fastest, etc. and I tell you people like this the most!
13
![Page 14: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
• Technique. Do not mistake for Strava, Runkeeper, Endomondo, Bike my Ride kind of apps
• Ring‐Ring automatically picks up your rides and recognizes with a very hight probability if this was a cycle ride. You do not have to switch on or off the application.
• This makes the app unconscious like the power of our brains when cycling
14
![Page 15: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
• Each BikeMile counts for 3 at the same time during this pilot!
• You can exchange personal miles at local shops for special offers
• The group BikeMiles will be collected in a fund for the area and help other inititatives for a nicer city
• The Toppers: who rides the most Miles
15
![Page 16: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
• We noticed that the competition element DOES work and can be made more fun.
• People even tend to cycle even more because of this element.
16
![Page 17: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
• In a very basic form this is the list of TOPPERS.
• In the paper we have just announced the quarterly topper: Jabik de Vries!
• Elly Bos is at spot number 4. Her cycle story was last month in the paper.
17
![Page 18: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
• Every month a cyclestory in the papers and social media
• We build a community of cyclers to be proud of and readers will be inspired to also start cycling!
• A small personal change with huge effects
18

• Everyone wants to be part of the game and already is a winner within their ownleague.
20
![Page 21: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
• Community of groups that benefits from cyclist and where certain groups can make it fun to put game‐elements in the app.

![Page 22: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
• Trying to get people out of the car on a cycle has been tried a lot, however failed over and over again. People’s habits, financial car benefits are hard to change.
• So use the power of the existing cyclists and make them proud of their choices, reward them: They are the sunshine.
• Because we have so many copying healthy behaviour is a natural logical next step. I have been around long enough to see this around me with several things, that I wouldn’t have bet for.
• Why Ring‐Ring has good changes to work: Tipping point (around 30%) is needed
22
![Page 23: Games for Health Europe 2013 | Ring-Ring | pdf with notes](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022051815/54123c398d7f729e728b4771/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
The current stage Ring‐Ring is in is stage 100!
