The Mustangs are still alive to qualify for the conference tournament. To do so, they must sweep this weekend’s series. Last weekend MSU split a home series with Texas A&M-Commerce. On Tues- day, they lost twice to Central Oklahoma in their final home games of the season. Last Time Out Texas A&M-Kingsville dropped the series at Tarleton State three games to one. With the losses and combined with other results in the Lone Star Conference, the Javelinas have been officially elimi- nated from making the conference tournament. The TexAnns won the first game 17-2 in five innings and took the second 6-4 after it was suspended with one out in the bottom of the fourth. TAMUK split Sunday’s doubleheader as both ended by the score of 5-4. Loren Donaldson and Rachael Longoria led the Blue and Gold with five hits in the series. Donaldson had a home run and four RBI while Valerie Ramirez and Longoria plated two apiece. Ariana Munoz drove in three as she hit her first collegiate homer. In the circle, Karri Smith went the distance the final three games of the weekend. She compiled a 1-2 record with a 2.14 ERA and five strikeouts. Carlie Clark started game one but was rocked for four runs on two hits and walks and recorded just two outs. Bella Rosas threw the final 3.1 innings of that contest, surrendering 13 runs on 16 hits. She did record a strikeout in her lone appearance.

About Midwestern StateMidwestern State enters the final weekend of the regular at 22-22 and 9-15 in the Lone Star Confer-ence. The Mustangs are still alive to qualify for the conference tournament. To do so, they must sweep this weekend’s series. Last weekend MSU split a home series with Texas A&M-Commerce. On Tues-day, they lost twice to Central Oklahoma in their final home games of the season.

Last Time OutTexas A&M-Kingsville dropped the series at Tarleton State three games to one. With the losses and combined with other results in the Lone Star Conference, the Javelinas have been officially elimi-nated from making the conference tournament. The TexAnns won the first game 17-2 in five innings and took the second 6-4 after it was suspended

with one out in the bottom of the fourth. TAMUK split Sunday’s doubleheader as both ended by the score of 5-4.

Loren Donaldson and Rachael Longoria led the Blue and Gold with five hits in the series. Donaldson had a home run and four RBI while Valerie Ramirez and Longoria plated two apiece. Ariana Munoz drove in three as she hit her first collegiate homer.

Scouting Midwestern StateKelley Schaefer leads MSU with a .355 batting average and is one of six regulars hitting over .300. She has also recorded nine home runs, 32 RBI and scored 27 times. Katelyn Vinson is fourth in the LSC with 16 homers while also driving in 42 and scoring 33 runs. Katy Vandewater has also reached double-figures in dingers with 10 and paces the Mustangs in RBI (43). Both are hitting over .300 at .313 and .311, respectively.

Entering the series a perfect 15-for-15 stealing bases is Haley Howerton. Paige Stevens is second with 11 swipes. Taylor Bermudes is next on the squad with six steals.

MSU comes in hitting .310 with .398 and .500 on-base and slugging percentages, respectively. The Mustangs have 378 hits with 53 homers, 52 doubles and 10 triples. They have drawn 174 walks and struck out 172 times. In the field, MSU has committed 58 errors for a .954 fielding percentage.

In the circle, Tayler Jerrick has a staff-low 3.55 ERA and team best three shutouts. For the season she is 6-7 in 16 games, 14 of them starts, and has tossed 88.2 innings. Her 63 strikeouts is tied for the most on the staff with Katlyn Holmes, who is 9-8 with a 5.86 ERA. Holmes’ 108.2 innings are are team-high while she has also been credited with all three of the Mustangs’ saves. Rounding out the hurlers is Erin Knox. She is 7-7 with a 5.56 ERA in 84.1 innings, gone the distance in 10 games and has struck out 46.

MSU goes into the weekend with a 5.04 ERA in 281.2 innings. Their 32 complete games is second in the league behind Angelo State. The Mustangs have struck out 172, issued 124 free passes and have hit 16. Opponents are hitting .309 against them with 50 doubles, 29 home runs and 11 triples.

All-Time vs. MSUMSU maintains a 19-5 series lead over the Javelinas. The Mustangs have won 12 straight and 16 of the last 17 meetings. TAMUK’s last win came on Feb. 12, 2011 by the score of 1-0 at Hubert Field. In Kingsville, MSU is 7-3 including a three-game sweep in 2012.

Rain, Rain Go AwayFor the fifth time this season rain has forced the cancel-ation of games. Wednesday the Javelinas’s doubleheader at Houston-Victoria was washed away after heavy rain hit the field an hour before first pitch. The eight other twinbills that have been canceled this year were against Angelo State, Huston-Tillotson, Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Commerce.

TAMUK Eliminated for LSC Tourney ContentionWith their three losses to Tarleton State and other results through out the Lone Star Conference this past weekend, TAMUK was officially elminiated from qualifying for the conference tournament. The Javelinas haven’t played in the LSC Tournament since the 2009 season. They can play spoilier this weekend when they host Midwestern State.

Historic TieThe Javelinas recorded a tie for the second time in school history in the series finale against Texas Woman’s. The game ended 1-1 with an out in the top of the sixth. It just so happens that the first tie came against the Pioneers in Denton, Texas on Mar. 17, 2006 by the score of 2-2 in 10 innings.

Season Split vs. SEUFor only the second time since 2011, TAMUK split the season series with St. Edward’s. The Javelinas and the Hilltoppers split both doubleheaders in Austin and Kingsville. The last time the Blue and Gold split versus SEU was in 2013.

Clark Named LSC Pitcher of the WeekWith her performance last week on the rubber, Carlie Clark was named the Lone Star Conference’s Pitcher of the Week. She went 3-0 with a 0.67 ERA, 13 strikeouts, three complete games and one shutout. It is the first weekly conference award for the sophomore.

Sweep of ZiasTexas A&M-Kingsville entered into the hunt for a spot in the LSC Tournament with the sweep of Eastern New Mex-ico. It was the first time the Javelinas took every game in a series in conference play since March 12-13, 2010. That series also took place at Hubert Field against the Zias.

Home Sweet Home Part 1The Javelinas love to play games at Hubert Field. This season they are 11-1 after sweeping the four-game series from Eastern New Mexico. TAMUK is batting .370 and av-eraging 5.7 runs a game. On the rubber, Javelina pitchers have combined for a 2.36 ERA, 65 strikeouts and a .275 opponents batting average.

Home Sweet Home Part 2Carlie Clark has been dominate on the rubber at Hubert Field in 2015. In six starts, she is 5-0 with five complete games, two shutouts, a 1.41 ERA and 38 strikeouts. Away from Kingsville Clark has struggled, going 0-3 with an 8.72 ERA and has struck out just eight.

season. Of her 41 strikeouts, 38 of them have come in the circle at Hubert Field. In the season opener against Texas A&M International, she struck out eight. She followed with nine versus Huston-Tillotson, incluiding the first three batters of the game on the minimum nine pitches., and another eight against Texas A&M-Commerce.

Castro Plunked MarkJaeleen Castro set the Javellina career hit by pitch mark on March 13. The record occurred in the second game of a doubleheader at Cameron. For her career, she has been hit 23 times. Castro broke a tie she had with Kenna Gipson (2005-06) for the record.

TAMUK vs. LSCTexas A&M-Kingsville has compiled a 152-204-2 record against the current members of the Lone Star Conference. All-time in LSC games, the Jave-linas are 151-225-2. The most games they have played versus a conference foe is 75 against Texas Women’s. The have a winning record against only Eastern New Mexico.

Weather Effects Schedule AgainLast week inclement weather hit the South Texas area and caused changes to TAMUK’s schedule. A doubleheader with Huston-Tillotson was canceled while two games at St. Mary’s were rescheduled from Tuesday to Thursday.

St. Edward’s Doubleheader PostponedMarch 10’s scheduled doubleheader at home with St. Edward’s was postponed due to rain. Orignially pushed back a day, the twinbill was later resched-uled for April 8.

Winning FebruaryTexas A&M-Kingsville completed February with a 6-5 record. It was the first time they have finished the first month of the season with a winning record since 2009 when they went 14-6. The 2012 Javelinas came close, going 8-8 in the first month of the season.

Bombs AwayTAMUK blasted four homers in the final game of the Southeastern Regional Invitational against Southwestern Oklahoma State. The home run total is the most by the Javelinas in a game since also hitting four at Eastern New Mexico on March 25, 2011.

Boyett Goes Yard TwiceHaley Boyett hit two dingers against the Bulldogs, half of TAMUK’s total in the game. She is the first Javelina to hit two in a contest since Adela Gomez at Midwestern State on April 20, 2013. The school record is three off the bat of Sarah Norman at Southern Arkansas (Feb. 9, 2002).

Single-Game Caught Stealing MarkThree times the Javelinas were thrown out try-ing to steal in the season opener against Texas A&M International. The mark tied the school’s single-game school record. The last time the Blue and Gold were thrown out thrice in a game was February 1, 2008 versus Texas Woman’s in San Antonio, Texas.

Season OpenersTexas A&M-Kingsville improved to 11-8 all-time in season openers after defeating Texas A&M Inter-national 4-2. They had previously lost two straight with the last win coming in 2012 versus Texas-Perm-ian Basin (13-0, 5 innings).

Season Opener Pushed BackThe season opener between Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International was pushed back from its orignal date of Feb. 3. With rain on Tues-day, the two head coaches decided to move the doublehder to Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Opening at HomeWhen beginning their year at Hubert Field, TAMUK is now 8-3. The Javelinas increased their winning streak to six straight dating back to 2004. Their last defeat in a season opener at home came against St. Mary’s in 2003. This year was the first time the Blue and Gold began at home in four years.

Opening SeriesThe Javelinas improved to 31-25 all-time in their first series or tournament of a season with a doubleheader sweep of TAMUI. Last season TAMUK went 2-3 last season to begin the year at a tournament hosted by St. Mary’s in San Antonio, Texas.

LSC Preseason PollTexas A&M-Kingsville was picked to finish eighth in the six-team Lone Star Conference this year by head coahes, sports information directors and various media members and sports information directors. Last season the Javelinas were also picked eighth when the conference consisted of eight programs. This is the second time in three years the Blue and Gold have been picked to fin-ish next to last in the LSC.

Schedule NotesThe Javelinas are scheduled to play 56 regular season game this season that includes 32 LSC games, four against the eight other teams. Conference series will consist of four games with doubleheader on Fridays and Saturdays. It will be the most LSC games ever played in a season, surpassing the 28 that were scheduled from last season.

Key Javelina ReturnersValerie Ramirez is the top returning offensive threat for the Blue and Gold. She hit a team-high .306 with four home runs, 30 RBI and scored 26 runs. Her 15 doubles were also the most on the squad last season. Also back for her senior season is Jaeleen Castro. A .280 bat-ter, she drove in 21 runs while crossing the plate 17 times and hitting 11 doubles and one triple. She is also the team’s top returner base stealer with five.Playing as the designted player last season, Myrissa Sanchez posted two doubles, two triples and a home run. She hit .231, scored 17 times and plated 15 runs. Connie Brassell saw limited playing time (11 games) and recorded only two hits in 26 at bats (.077).

In the circle, Carlie Clark tossed a team-high 149.1 inning. She com-piled a 6-19 record with 5.39 ERA over 32 games. Clark completed 12 games to go along with 77 strikeouts and 86 walks. Starting 12 games apiece was Ariel Kellogg (29 strikeouts) and Kat Tapley (34 strikeouts, 1 save). Both recorded three wins with Kellogg getting credited with 12 losses and eight going to Tapley.

Betsy Dean became the seventh head coach in the history of Texas A&M University-Kingsville softball program in July 2014. She joins the Javelina Athletic Department after two seasons at Seton Hall University as the pitching coach for the Pirates. In all, Dean has over eight years of coaching on the secondary and post-secondary level.

From 2012 thru the 2014 season, Dean served as the pitching coach for Seton Hall where she coached three All-Big East players and helped the Pirates reach the Big East tournament for the first time since 2009.

Prior to heading to Seton Hall, she lent her coaching talents to Adelphi University as a pitching and power hitting coach. During her tenure, she coached several players, who achieved various honors such as East-ern College Athletic Conference Division II All-Star and All-Northeast-10 Honors.

Her early years in coaching were spent as the head softball coach at Elba High School in Elba, Alabama in 2008. While at Elba, Dean won an area title in her first season and owned G-Force Competitive Fastpitch Training. Her program became a very influential facility for female athletes in the south Alabama and northwest Florida.

During her free time, she worked various camps at universities such Rutgers, Notre Dame, the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and Hofstra.

Dean attended Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Florida from 2000-02. As a freshman, she was named to the Panhandle Conference All-Conference Team at second base, while being named All-Conference as a pitcher in her sopho-more season. White was also named GCCC College Athlete of the Year as a sophomore as well. After her time at GCCC, she received a scholarship to play at Lipscomb Univer-sity from 2002-05. At Lipscomb, she twice finished second on her team in home runs.

The Troy, Ala. native is married to Christo-pher Dean.
