Today’s Honoree

Thiel College and St. Paul’s, a continuing care community with all levels of care, have been neighbors for more than 130 years. Recognizing the ben-efits to both Thiel students and residents of St. Paul’s of more frequent and structured opportunities to learn from each other, the Joining Generations program was created in 2005. This important venture has enabled younger and older adults to more fully appreciate each other through a variety of meaningful contacts, experiences and learning opportunities such as intern-ships, volunteer service and academic opportunities.

Thiel College is proud to honor this vital collaboration by naming St. Paul’s this year’s Community Day Game Honoree. This relationship continues to grow and evolve and positively impact both organizations. Today we welcome residents, staff and administration of St. Paul’s and celebrate their commitment to this process.

Dr. Troy D. VanAken took office as the 19th president of Thiel Col-lege in July of 2009, after being elected by the College Board of Trust-ees at a special meeting on February 20.

VanAken, who came to Thiel from Albion College in Albion, Mich., holds a bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College, and master’s and doctorate degrees from Bowling Green State University. A native of Michigan, his career in higher education began in 1994 when he was

appointed assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Evansville and where he was later selected as assistant vice president for instructional technology. In 1999, Albion College named him vice president for information technology. After working at San Jose State University during 2002–03 through an American Council on Education Fellowship, VanAken returned to Albion with expanded responsibilities as athletic director and executive assistant to the president, and eventually vice president for business and finance. VanAken participated in Harvard Univer-sity’s Institute for Educational Management in 2005 and was named Albion’s executive vice presi-dent in 2006.

In addition to experience as a high school football and track coach, VanAken has served on committees of both the NCAA and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Recently, he was appointed to represent the Presidents’ Athletic Conference on the NCAA Division III Chancellor/ Presidents Advisory Group. He is active in economic and community development projects and has started three successful technology related companies.

VanAken and his wife, Annette, have two children, Trey and Gabriella.

Jack Leipheimer ’74 took over as Thiel College’s director of athlet-ics on Nov. 17, 2008. He currently oversees Thiel’s 24 competitive athletics programs, 22 of which are associated with the NCAA at the Division III level.

A coaching veteran of 34 years – including 25 at the collegiate level – Leipheimer returned to Thiel as its head football coach in 2001 and promptly guided the program to national prominence. His 2005 team compiled an 11-1 record and drew two NCAA playoff games to Alumni Stadium.

Over his eight seasons at the helm of the football program, Leipheimer amassed 36 wins – which ties for third most all-time in school history – including a NCAA Division III playoff win in 2005. Under his tutelage, Thiel players earned 114 all-conference selections, 17 all-region selec-tions and 10 All-America selections. He also coached five ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Amer-icans – a testament to his emphasis on academic excellence. Leipheimer continues to stress the importance of academic and athletic success to Thiel’s student-athletes as he oversees the day-to-day operations of the athletic department. In addition, Leipheimer’s focus on fund-raising efforts supports Thiel’s entire athletics program, which includes more than 40 coaches and staff members and over 300 student-athletes.

Jack and his wife, Patti, reside in Greenville. They have two daughters: Shanna Bossler, a 2002 Thiel graduate and Krista Ferguson, a 2005 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh.

Kurt reiser enters his fourth season as the head coach

after being named the 25th head coach in thiel college football history on nov. 16, 2008. a member of the coach-ing staff in various capacities under JacK leipheimer for eight seasons, reiser most recently served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the tomcats.

As a member of the Thiel coaching staff, Reiser has been no stranger to success.

As the team’s offensive line coach from 2001 to 2006, Reiser men-tored eight Tomcats to a com-bined 19 All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selections. Two players – Dave Hendricks and Bob Munch – were four-time selections.

In Thiel’s 11-win 2005 campaign, the Reiser-led offensive line played an integral part in securing the pro-gram’s first PAC title since 1972 and its first undefeated regular season since 1950. Five members of that unit were named to the All-PAC team, with two garnering first team honors.

While Hendricks turned in one of the best seasons of all time for a Thiel of-fensive lineman, earning AFCA first team and D3 Football.com first team All-America honors in addition to being named the Don Hansen Football Gazette National Offensive Lineman of the Year and earning an invitation to participate in the Aztec Bowl, the O-line as a whole paved the way for a

potent Tomcat attack.

Over the course of the 2005 season, Reiser’s line allowed only seven sacks in the regular season and aided in es-tablishing Steve Minton as the school’s all-time leading rusher and Darrell Satterfield and Brandon Chambers as one of the most prolific quarterback-receiver duos in school history.

After being named offensive coordina-tor prior to the 2007 season, Reiser has called the shots for several of the most impressive offensive displays in Thiel football annals.

In his inaugural season as the Tomcats’ offensive play-caller, running back Dan Hess set three school records in one day, racking up 327 yards and 30 points on 43 rushes in a 62-14 drubbing of Saint Vincent College. The next season quarterback Willie Bova conducted a similar assault on Thiel passing records against the Bearcats, completing 32 of 63 passes for 374 yards (all three are school records) and three scores.

Prior to arriving at Thiel, Reiser was the offensive coordinator at Leyden High School in Chicago for six years. A 1993 Allegheny graduate, he earned his master’s degree from DePaul Univer-sity in 1997. With the Gators, where he played under then-assistant coach Leipheimer, Reiser was a three-year starter at tight end and was a two-time All-NCAC selection and an All-Amer-ican. Reiser was also a starter on the Gators’ 1990 National Championship team.

He and his wife, Nancy, have three chil-dren: Ben, Ethan, and Ellie.

ABOUT THE PAC

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Ath-letic Conference continues its mission

of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washing-ton and Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC rema in s a unique organi-zation in this day of high pres-sure intercol-legiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an ath-letic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself.

The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division III indepen-dent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Cha-tham College became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08.

The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III national champi-onship events.

All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in indi-

vidual sports such as cross country and tennis, All-PAC accolades are

based upon performances at the conference

championships.

The PAC an-nually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Tro-phies to the

schools which perform best

across the board in PAC competition.

The Washington & Jef-ferson College men and

Westminster College women captured the 2011-12 trophies.

True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named 735 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

THE PLAY

There’s The Drive, The Catch, the Im-maculate Reception and many other fa-mous football highlight plays. This one will go down in Thiel College history as The Play, mostly because The-Field-Goal-Turned-Touchdown-Pass-by-a-Defensive End/Place Kicker/Punter is just too darn long to survive long-term in football no-menclature.So, for the record, it’s The Play.

The Play started as a Not Top 10er, a moment where it looked as if the Thiel Tomcats had squandered an opportunity in an overtime contest against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes. The snap and hold on a potential go-ahead 22-yard field goal in overtime by Cody McClelland did not go smoothly.

But in a game of inches and seconds, Thiel’s luck changed in an instant.

The ball bounced just once into the cra-dled hands of McClelland, who initially took off up the field to try and advance the ball on the ground. McClelland was immediately blanketed by defenders and was forced into his final option: a pass.

Highlight named D3Football.com Play of the Week

by Ed Topoleski

“I realized I couldn’t get outside … and I was like, ‘I might as well look inside and see if anyone released,’” McClelland said. “Then I saw Kyle [Turkalj] go into the flat and I saw [Berend] Grube just chilling in the middle.”

Grube, the team’s starting tight end, had already received his marching orders. Hearing, ‘FIRE’ and ‘FUMBLE’ Grube abandoned his blocking assignment in favor of a short pass pattern into the end zone.

“I was supposed to go into the deep cor-ner of the end zone, but I kind of saw the rush coming really hard from the edge,” said Grube. “So, I didn’t expect whoever had the ball would be able to roll out and put it into the back of the end zone, so I was just trying to find an open window somewhere in the end zone not far away.”

While being tackled by a host of defend-ers, McClelland managed to get off a des-peration lob to Grube, who made the catch and lifted the Tomcats to a 21-14 overtime win over the Golden Torna-does.

“I was laying on the ground and I looked and I just saw the ball and then I saw [Grube] go up and get it,” McClelland said. “I was freaking out. I just couldn’t believe it.”

“It didn’t seem real,” said Grube. “I was trying to do something with the ball. I was going to dunk at first, but then I knew that was going to be a penalty and they would have had the ball at our 10-yard line. So I was just happy, I was just running around. It’s the most important touchdown of my career, pretty much, so I was just having a good time.”

24 T H I E L F O O T B A L L 2 0 1 2 28

The Play helped the Tomcats snap a 24-game losing streak that began in Week 9 of the 2009 season and led many at Alumni Stadium to shed tears of joy.

The Play itself is pretty popular. The high-light was named the D3Football.com Play of the Week Tuesday and, at the printing deadline for this media guide, had received 4,376 views on You Tube. The play was also hashtagged on Twitter to be consid-ered for inclusion in ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 but, to date, has not appeared on the show.

“I watched the You Tube video a few

times, but not too much,” said Grube. “My parents back home [in Germany] watched it like a thousand times.”

Perhaps what is most important about The Play is its potential impact on the blue-col-lar Thiel football team, which withstood a pair of close losses in the first two weeks of the season.

“Our team, we’ve just been so much more excited,” McClelland said. “We’re all very enthusiastic. We’re ready to get after W&J this week. Our team morale is just really high right now.”

Forever linked in Tomcat Football lore, McClelland and Grube walk back to the locker room after Saturday’s win.

TODAY’S GAME NOTESWeek 3 - Thiel 21, Geneva 14 (OT)GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel place kicker Cody Mc-Clelland had no idea what was about to transpire. Neither did tight end Berend Grube. The snapper-to-holder exchange for a potential go-ahead field goal in overtime against Geneva College did not go smoothly, and the football bounced gently at the Geneva 12-yard line.

It seemed like an unfortunate missed opportunity, but Thiel’s luck was about to change.

Grube heard ‘fire’ and ‘fumble’ and abandoned his blocking assignment in favor of a short pass-ing route in the end zone. McClelland picked up the ball, spotted No. 82 and, under heavy pres-sure, lobbed what would count as the game-win-ning touchdown pass to Grube.

Geneva’s offense still had an opportunity to tie the score up, but Thiel’s defense kept the Golden Tornadoes out of the end zone to put the finish-ing touches on a 21-14 overtime win Saturday at Alumni Stadium, which broke the team’s 24-game losing streak.

A celebration ensued with many wiping tears of joy from their eyes as the Tomcats rang the Vic-tory Bell for the first time since Oct. 21, 2009.

“I’m really excited for our kids because they hung in there over the course of two seasons that were really tough … this is a great win four our program,” said Thiel fourth-year head coach Kurt Reiser.

The Tomcats took a 14-0 lead into halftime on second-quarter touchdown runs by Josh Potter and Andrew Smith from 2- and 25-yards out, re-spectively.

Geneva came back in the third quarter and tied up the score, 14-14, on touchdown receptions by Corey O’Patchen (38 yards) and Rocco Colavec-chia (10 yards).

The Golden Tornadoes lined up for a potential 32-yard game-winning field goal with 23 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, but Bryan Visin-gardi’s kick sailed wide left.

Smith connected with Grube for a 16-yard com-pletion on Thiel’s first play in overtime. Taylor Fink then got the ball down to the Geneva 5-yard line on a pair of runs before Smith’s third-down pass in the far corner of the end zone for Nate Blazevich fell incomplete.

McClelland’s field goal attempt turned touchdown pass followed on fourth-and-goal from the Geneva 5-yard line.

On their ensuring drive the Golden Tornadoes picked up a first down on runs of 7- and 4-yards by Dylan Jones down to the Thiel 14-yard line, but that’s where the drive stopped. Colavecchia ran for no gain on first down, and Geneva threw three straight incomplete passes to end the game.

Thiel’s defense combined for nine pass break ups, eight tackles for loss and six sacks on the day.

The win could be a springboard for the Tomcats (1-2, 1-0 PAC), who entered Saturday’s game coming off of two tough losses.

“I think it gives us a little bit of confidence mov-ing forward,” Reiser said. “The last couple games have been pretty close, and I hope that this win will help us turn the corner.”

Tim Taylor Update

Tomcat senior defensive end Tim Taylor recorded six tackles, three sacks and two batted down passes at the line of scrimmage in last Saturday’s 21-14 overtime win over Geneva. He was named the PAC Defensive Player of the Week Monday for his efforts. Taylor, who carries a 3.49 cumulative GPA was also named the Thiel Men’s Student-Ath-lete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Scholar Athlete for the week of Sept. 10-16.

Taylor leads the PAC with five tackles for loss and four sacks.

Taylor is currently in a third-place tie on Thiel’s career sack list (25). He is in second place on the college’s career tackles for loss list (49.5).

Top Punter

Thiel punter Cody McClelland is leading the PAC with an average of 40.9 yars per punt. He ranks 26th in the nation among all Division III punters.

Sacks & Red Zone Defense

XXXX

Thiel’s defense leads the PAC with 12 sacks. The Tomcats are tied for 17th place nationally in the category.

The Tomcats are also the best in the PAC in red zone defense (63.6%).

Hainesworth, Edwards Shine

Thiel defensive backs Marshaun Hainesworth and Rob Edwards are tied for third in the PAC with three break ups apiece.

Don’t Blow the Whistle

Thiel is the least penalized team in the PAC with an average of just 28.7 penalty yards per contest.

Ludwig Ranks Sixth

Tomcat senior linebacker Ethan Ludwig is sixth in the PAC in average tackles per game (8.7).

Looking for the Pick

Thiel’s defense has played very well this season, but one thing the unit hasn’t accomplished yet is an in-terception. One or two INTs would certainly help the Tomcats today against the Presidents, who enter the game with five turnovers on the season (4 INTs, 1 fumble).
