BA D DAY ? R ES TA RT ? Q U I T ?GAM E OVE RP I TC H

T I T L E S

• We are basing our titleson the classical arcade (e.g. Pac Man) video games

• Titles will be pixilated as it is a convention of classic games and so emphasises the fact that it is a video game.

• We are keeping the titles simple, text over a solid background colour. As in ‘The Last of Us’

BA S I C P LO T• DAY 1: An Average Joe, and perhaps slight loser, Dan wakes

up from a restful sleep. In a montage, he gets ready for his day. As Dan is in the kitchen, he decides to make some toast, however the toast gets jammed in the toaster. Therefore he must choose between 3 different utensils to get it out. He chooses the metal knife and is electrocute. Dan dies.

• DAY 2: Dan wakes up again and day is exactly same, he is a little confused and has a sense of deja vu. This time, instead of choosing the metal utensil, Dan uses the wooden one and doesn’t get electrocuted. A note from his mother suggests that Dan goes to get a job. As Dan walks along the street with CVs in hand, he is almost hit by an incoming bike. However, he manages to dodge it. As he crosses the road, an old lady distracts him by waving at him. Gets hit by car and dies.

BA S I C P LO T C O N T I N U E D• DAY 3: Dan awakes and is this time very cautious. He is

very confused and frustrated about his situation. Again, he goes about his day but examines everything he does. He gets past the toaster, bike and car. Dan celebrates and thinks its all over but when he least expects, gets hit by another car and dies.

• DAY 4: Dan yet again awakes but makes body armour out of household objects. Goes about day but is determined not to die. Gets past toaster, bike and cars and doesn’t die. Dan hears massive noise behind him and turns around to see a massive “LEVEL COMPLETE” floating in the air behind him. Then he looks around to see a big window in the sky with a gamer celebrating in it, looking down at him.

C O S T

• The production should mainly be free due to all participating being volunteers

• However, there may be small costs incurred, such as fuel for driving to locations and costumes.

TA R G E T A U D I E N C E A N D H O W W E C A N TA R G E T T H E M .• Our target are mainly 18-40 years old, as this is

what we found from our research that was carried out through interviewing individuals at Bristol film festivals

• People from this age range are more likely to play video games

• We can target them using social media, Web 2.0 and short film festivals, such as Brief Encounters in Bristol

Style and Form• We will use the narrative technique of

following a central character as we only have one main character, so the audience can mainly focus on him.

• We will also use conventions of the Science Fiction to hint towards the ending. For example, special effects, the main twist and the style of titles.

R E S E A RC H For our research, we have played some video games and also watched other people playing them on Youtube such as Pewdiepie.

In relation to camera angles, we have found that some games like the Last of Us use a voyeuristic approach by simply following the character around. However in cutscenes, there are more cinematic angles such as close ups. However in Uncharted, there are long shots from different angles during gameplay to showcase the visuals and scenery.

In relation to narrative, video games narratives often feature a equilibrium which is quite mundane. However, then something goes very wrong. An example is in Heavy Rain where the father, Ethan, takes his son to the park where his son is then kidnapped by a serial killer.
