2014-15 was a tremendous year for Walsingham athletics, capped off with our first state championship since 2008. But there is little time to rest on laurels in sports, and we are eager to begin what will surely be an even better 2015-16 school year. We are excited about the growth and success of our programs, guided by an experienced and talented group of varsity coaches, and we are continuing to add even more great coaches to work with our Middle School teams in order to give our youngest athletes the best possible experience. Another focus is creating healthy, well-rounded student-athletes. As children are encouraged to specialize at younger ages, they not only risk burn-out and injury but also limit their overall athletic potential. Our coaches work together to give our students the best possible training in a safe and healthy competitive environment.

Walsingham is completely committed to the concept of education-based athletics. It is our goal to provide the best training in a competitive setting within the frame work of “educating the whole child.” We emphasize developing character traits such as perseverance, creativity, leadership, and of course, teamwork. This is not easy do to in an era when the win at all cost” mentality is prevalent. Stuck between college and professional sports on one end and the massive club and youth sports tsunami on the other, interscholastic sports has to be place where our kids learn these lessons. Walsingham parents are assured that our programs will provide a high level of training in fundamental skills within the framework of a complete Walsingham education.

Don’t get me wrong: we want to win, and we are very proud of the many victories we accumulated this past year. Five of our teams qualified for their respective state tournaments, and in addition to

the state championship, two of our teams earned runner-up status. We also want our students who desire to compete after high school to be able do so, and we are proud of the six from the Class of 2015 that have made that decision. (See page 11 – Trojans in College.)

But even with these goals, we will not sacrifice our values or our children in the process. For example, just this spring, our baseball team was competing in its biggest regular season game of the year, clinging to a 1-0 lead late in the annual game at William & Mary’s Plumeri Park. Thomas Chisam, our college-bound starter, was pitching very well but was

nearing 100 pitches on the night. Our coach, Ian Heisel, was faced with a decision: leave the pitcher in the game and maximize the chances of winning that night, or follow through on his commitment to the player and his family to not over-work his arm. It was an easy decision for our coach to make: the pitcher was taken out the game. And even though we

lost, the player and his teammates learned from the example of integrity Coach Heisel set for our young men that they will remember and emulate as they become adults. Situations like that are rare, and we believe that doing the right thing and winning go hand in hand 99% of the time. But it is good to know that when those situations arise, our coaches do the right thing.

Navigating through youth and high school athletics is becoming more and more difficult for today’s parents. At Walsingham, we work every day to make sure that our students receive top level coaching and athletic exposure within the framework of a complete education so that our athletes’ talents and work ethic can allow them to reach their goals.

Go Trojans!

Playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, Varsity Boys Soccer fought hard to earn seven victories and a place in the TCIS Tournament. Highlights of the season included a victory over Atlantic Shores at the team’s “Under the Lights” event at William & Mary and a 7-0 win over Stonebridge on Senior Night. The play of the defense and goalkeeper Alex Bolton, who earned a spot on the TCIS All-Conference First Team, was a bright spot throughout the season, keeping the Trojans close against fierce opposition.

2014 proved to be a renaissance year for Varsity Volleyball. Despite some key losses from the 2013 team, the Trojans exceeded last year’s win total, finishing with a record of 15-8 (5-4 TCIS). The Trojans hosted a TCIS Tournament match for the first time in at least six years, and earned a spot in the VISAA State Tournament. Season highlights included victories over Hampton Roads Academy, Norfolk Academy, and Peninsula Catholic. The Trojans benefited from strong leadership from all of their seniors, and Jenna Hamra and Emma Schellpeper each earned TCIS All-Conference First Team honors for their play.

The Girls Tennis program was brought back to life in 2014. The team was very young but loaded with potential. The Trojans played some really competitive matches, earned 8th in the TCIS, and displayed great sportsmanship throughout. The team has grown so much after only a year, and the future is very exciting for the program.

Ask the AthletesWe talked to four of our brightest student athletes to describe the athletic experience at Walsingham.

Rachel Clancy (‘16)Field Hockey

Athletics have always been a big part of my experience at Walsingham Academy, and I remember the excitement I felt when I was finally allowed to play. Since 6th Grade, I have

participated in almost every sport Walsingham had to offer. All of my coaches pushed me to excel. Most of all, they taught me the desire to succeed. Athletes at Walsingham are taught to win or lose in the right way.

Jack Grimson (‘16)Cross Country, Track & Field

I have loved being an athlete at Walsingham Academy. Despite our small size, our athletic department gives student athletes a chance to be very competitive in our conference and even

against much larger schools. For me, being on teams with the goal to win a state championship has given me inspiration to work my hardest in everything that I do. I am especially appreciative for the lessons I have learned through sports at Walsingham. When I see athletes here helping their teammates get through injuries, overcome losses, or celebrate victories, it reminds me of the values I have learned as a Trojan. I believe that I have become a more organized, thoughtful, and motivated person, because of the experiences I have had here as an athlete.

Christine McBeath (‘16)Basketball, Soccer

I have been a student at Walsingham Academy since Kindergarten. I have loved being at Walsingham! I feel truly blessed to attend a school that has given me the opportunity to excel

in academics with many great teachers helping me along the way. Not only has Walsingham laid a foundation in academics, it sparked my interest in athletics ever since I participated in Middle School sports. Athletics at Walsingham have given me the opportunity to become a leader. Ever since I became involved with Varsity sports in 8th Grade, I noticed how I had a teammate that took charge as a leader. From then on, I knew I wanted to serve as a role model for others.

Last year was my first year at Walsingham Academy. The experience was very different from my previous school and has given me a new outlook on the world. On the court, it was great. We

had an awesome season, and I feel like it made me a better leader and a better friend. I learned a lot from Coach Barnes. He really cares about me and puts me in the best situations to succeed.

Varsity Boys Basketball again turned in another stellar campaign, compiling a record of 24-7 (7-2 TCIS) and advancing to the TCIS Tournament Semifinals and the VISAA State Tournament Quarterfinals. Highlights of the season included an impressive victory over St. Christopher’s in a December meeting of undefeated teams and a wild win over Bishop Sullivan Catholic on Senior Night. Guard Richard Washington (’16) was a force all season, leading the TCIS in scoring at 23.3 points per game. The Trojans will bid farewell to seniors Kai Brown, Thomas Chisam, Jack Keating, and Brett Smith; Brown and Chisam have been mainstays in the Trojan starting lineup, and the contributions of all four to the program have been invaluable.

Varsity Baseball had another monumental season in 2015, advancing to the VISAA State Championship game for the first time in program history. Led by a senior class that included Thomas Chisam (TCIS All-Conference First Team), Jack Keating, and Ryan Keating (TCIS All-Conference Second Team), the Trojans finished the regular season with a record of 8-9 and earned the #2 ranking entering the VISAA State Tournament. This ranking marks the highest in program history, and consequently

rewarded the Trojans with their first ever home playoff game in the VISAA Tournament, which they won 14-3 on May 12. Season highlights included beating Cape Henry and Isle of Wight for the first time in program history, Gabe Bono’s walk-off home run to beat NSA, and Thomas Chisam’s walk-off home run to beat Bishop Sullivan on Senior Day.

The Girls Track & Field Team made history in 2015, bringing home Walsingham’s first state championship in any sport since 2008, recording 135 points at the VISAA Division II Track & Field Championship on May 16 in Richmond. The championship performance was the culmination of a busy and successful season. After very competitive showings in the early part of the season at the Conn Madden Relays and The Captain’s Classic, the Trojans won successive meets at Hampton Roads Academy, as well as a meet at Greenbrier. On May 2, the Trojans won the Walsingham-hosted D2 Invitational, and they followed that performance with a 2nd place finish at the TCIS
