PORTLAND THORNS FC AT BOSTON BREAKERSSATURDAY, MAY 16, 2015

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH PAUL RILEYPaul Riley begins his second season as Thorns FC head coach in 2015 after tak-ing over as the club’s head coach for the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season on Dec. 10, 2013. Riley has compiled a lengthy head coaching career at the youth, collegiate and professional levels.

In his first season, Riley made several key acquistions, helping Thorns FC qualify for the 2014 NWSL Playoffs, one of just two teams to qualify for the postseason in each of the first two seasons of the league. Riley acquired Spain Women’s National Team midfielder and former Women’s Professional Soccer MVP Vero Boquete, 2013 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year and Germany Women’s National Team goalkeeper Nadine Angerer and Australia Women’s National Team defender Steph Catley as Portland compiled a 10-8-6 record in Riley’s first season.

Previously serving as head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in Women’s Professional Soccer, Riley helped build the club into one of the best teams in the league reaching the WPS Championship match in each of the team’s two seasons. A two-time WPS Coach of the Year selection (2010, 2011), Riley compiled a 21-14-7 regular-season record in two seasons at the helm in Philadelphia, including a mark of 11-4-3 during the 2011 season.

Having coached at every level, Riley began his women’s coaching career with the Long Island Fury of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2005, leading the club to a national championship in its inaugural 2006 season and a second title in 2009. Riley was named WPSL Coach of the Year in 2009 and, most recently, coached the team during their 2013 WPSL campaign. With the advent of WPSL Elite in 2012, Riley took charge of the New York Fury, helping guide the club to the semifinal round of the playoffs.

A native of Liverpool, England, Riley has served as a youth coach and director of coaching for Long Island-based Albertson Soccer Club since 1994, helping build one of the most well-known youth devel-opment clubs in the Northeast.

Prior to coaching women’s soccer, Riley began his professional coaching career as head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders from 1998-2003, earning USL A-League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and guiding the Rough Riders to the USL D3 Pro League championship in 2002.

At the collegiate level, Riley served as head coach of the LIU Post men’s soccer team from 1990-97, registering an 88-49-13 overall record and garnering New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now East Coast Conference) Coach of the Year recognition five times (1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997).

As a player, Riley spent a 10-year professional career in the Northeast with the Albany Capitals (1988), New Jersey Eagles (1989-92) and Long Island Rough Riders (1994-98).

A midfielder at Adelphi University from 1982-85, Riley holds the program’s all-time career record in assists (43). In his senior season in 1985, Riley recorded 47 points (15g, 17a) and helped lead the Panthers to a No. 24 national ranking. Third on the all-time list in career points (121), Riley was named to the Adelphi Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Riley graduated from Adelphi in 1986 with a degree in journalism and English. He earned a master’s degree in marketing and advertising from LIU Post in 1989.

AYO ARRIVALPortland’s newest signing arrived in the Rose City this week after finishing her season with Frauen Bundesliga club Turbine Potsdam. In her final match with the German side, Ayo netted her 10th goal of the season in a 3-1 victory over USV Jena. Genoveva (Ayo) Añonma ranks among the top scorers all-time in the history of the Frauen Bundesliga. In 113 Bundesliga games, Ayo scored 84 goals, while also adding 24 goals in 21 German Cup matches. A notable mention is the fact that all of Ayo’s goals have come during the run of play, none from the penalty spot. While Ayo may not be headed to Canada this summer she does have experience on the international level and is one of three current Thorns FC players, along with Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair, to score in a FIFA Women’s World Cup. Ayo and Equatorial Guinea dropped all three matches in group play at the 2011 World Cup, but Ayo tallied both goals in a 3-2 loss against Australia.

SCOUTING THE BOSTONBoston (1-3-0, 3pts) suffered a 3-0 loss on the road against the Chicago Red Stars on the road on May 9. The Breakers lone win of the season came in their home opener against the Houston Dash on April 26. While most of Boston’s squad remains intact with the World Cup less than a month away, the Breakers will be without the services of goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who is with the U.S. Women’s National Team. Jami Kranich made her NWSL debut in goal with Naeher away on international duty. Every goal the Breakers have tallied has come from a different player: forward Nkem Ezurike, Julie King, Morgan Marlborough and Stephanie McCaffrey all have scored this season. McCaffrey, Boston’s 2015 NWSL College Draft first-round pick, has recorded a goal and two assists this season and has played all but 11 minutes in the team’s first four matches. Midfielder Kristie Mewis is a threat to score for Boston, ranking first in the league in shots (16) and third in shots on goal (9). In the last meeting against Thorns FC in Portland, McCaffrey tallied a second-half goal for Boston in a 2-1 loss.

MILESTONE WATCHMidfielder Mana Shim played in her 40th career match for Thorns FC on May 9 against the Washington Spirit. She becomes one of four players in club history to have appeared in 40 or more games along with midfielder Allie Long, defender Nikki Marshall and forward Christine Sinclair. Shim also inches closer to becom-ing one of just five players to score 10 or more goals in a Thorns uniform. Shim sits alone in fifth place with eight goals. Additionally, Shim moved into a tie with Long for second-place in career assists (7). Long now ranks as Portland’s career leader in several categories after Saturday’s game against Washington. Most notably, Long became Thorns FC’s all-time career leader in points (38), while she moved into a tie with Sinclair for career goals (16). She will likely claim the top spot on the list for career starts this weekend (48) and surpass Marshall in that category as well.

LONG AT THE TOP OF HER GAME Midfielder Allie Long is tied for the league lead with four goals in four games this season for Thorns FC. The midfielder has registered a goal or an assist in all four of Portland’s matches this season. Last time against Boston, Long tallied a brace. Among the top goal 10 goal scorers in the NWSL season, Long has the highest shots on goal percentage (73), while also leading the league in shots on goal (11).
