CARRYING CAPACITY MODEL IMPORTANT TO FARMERS ANDHUNTERS

The application of realistic carrying capacity norms (the grazing area used peranimal without causing the grazing to deteriorate in the long term) in a countrywith unsteady rainfall patterns and diverse grazing habitats has enabled the live-stock industry to produce sustainably and limit risks in the long term over theyears. The diversity of herbivorous game animals with regard to species, size andhabitat requirements makes it difficult to apply similar carrying capacity norms togame as those used for livestock.

The Centre for Wildlife Management of the University of Pretoria launched aresearch programme that, among other things, looks at an alternative carryingcapacity model for game, based on the change in the mouth parts of animals asbody size increases, and its relation to determining which plant species areutilised by a specific animal. (Read “Drakrag-dilemma” p 108.)

To guarantee the success of this research project, the co-operation of gameranchers and hunters is required to ensure that sufficient measurements of themouth parts of the various herbivorous game species are obtained.

We wish to encourage game ranchers and hunters to help make this informationavailable as it will also serve their best interests. Carrying capacity norms forgame ranchers can contribute to more efficient production, resulting in a biggerguarantee of hunting opportunities for hunters and in definite benefits for soilconservation.

Co-operation by the parties involved to establish an alternative carrying capacitymodel for game will once again illustrate the synergy that exists between gameproduction, hunting and conservation.
