SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs HOUSTON DYNAMO AT&T PARK, San Francisco, Calif.

March 17, 2012 (WEEK 2, MLS Game #10) 2 p.m. PT (CSN-CA; FS-Hou; MultiM)

The only meeting of the year between two clubs that share a common ancestry will come at San Francisco’s AT&T Park, when the San Jose Earthquakes take on the Houston Dynamo on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are coming off First Kick victories. The Quakes are coming off a 1-0 victory against the New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium, while the Dynamo started their long road swing with a last-gasp 1-0 win at Chivas USA. This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. The two teams have shared a pitched rivalry since the Earthquakes returned to the league in 2008, after the

Dynamo moved to Houston from San Jose in 2006. They have split their season series in each of the four years since the Quakes’ return.

In nine all-time meetings, each team has won four (with one tie), and each team has scored 13 goals. Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. HOU: P15 W6 L6 D3 … Dominic Kinnear vs. SJ: P9 W4 L4 D1

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes opened their season with a victory for the first time since returning to the league, defeating the New England Revolution 1-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium. LAST MATCH

The game's lone goal came after 15 minutes. San Jose winger Shea Salinas scooped up possession from an errant pass and quickly slipped a through ball to Chris Wondolowski. The U.S. international took one touch and fired from just outside the penalty area past New England goalkeeper Matt Reis.

Steven Lenhart made his return to the club and started for Frank Yallop as the spearhead in attack. Newcomer Victor Bernardez filled a spot in central defense.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-1-1): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Justin Morrow, Victor Bernardez, Ramiro Corrales - Marvin Chavez (Simon Dawkins 64), Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca, Shea Salinas - Chris Wondolowski - Steven Lenhart (Khari Stephenson 69).

TEAM NEWS Chris Wondolowski picked up right where he left off, scoring the only goal vs. New England. Wondolowski

scored in the final five games of the 2011 season – the six consecutive games with a goal is one shy of the all-time MLS record, set in 1997 by Raúl Diaz Arce, 2000 by Wolde Harris and 2006 by Carlos Ruiz.

“That was a team effort to put me in a place to score,” said Wondolowski. “Shea (Salinas) put great pressure on them to get the turnover and he was able to play a good ball. He fed me and it was an easy job to finish it. It was an important for us to score first and be on top early.”

The Earthquakes won their home opener for the first time since returning to MLS in 2008. They had lost their previous four home openers by a combined score of 6-0.

“Last year, we would have most probably, if not definitely, conceded a late goal,” Quakes head coach Frank Yallop said. “All in all, just really pleased to get the three points, get this game out of the way and just move on and look forward to the rest of the season. I said during the week it’s like a Cup final to us, and we won the Cup final. So now we can build on it.”

MLS GAME INFORMATION

In addition, the Quakes held onto the lead – something they struggled with in 2011, when they finished 7-4-5 in matches where they scored the first goal, 16th out of 18 MLS clubs.

“Compared to last year, I thought we kept the ball at times and we were able to see the game out by passing through [New England] rather than just lumping it long and defending in our 18,” Wondolowski said. “I think they had possession, but not possession in dangerous places. They had it deep in their half, and I don’t think they created many [scoring] opportunities.”

A year ago, the Quakes won just twice by a single goal and did not record a 1-0 victory. Goalkeeper Jon Busch credited the addition of Honduran center back Victor Bernardez with solidifying the back four.

“I’ve played with a lot of good defenders throughout the years and he’s going to be one of the good ones,” said Busch. “I know it’s only one game, but he keeps things organized. He’s very comfortable on the ball, which helps. Nothing against the other guys we have, but that’s what we were missing, I think, last year: A leader on that backline.”

Added Yallop: “I think Victor’s presence and calming influence on the team is what was needed, and I think he did it well tonight. He was very assured and solid and played well.”

HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo kicked off their long road trip to begin the 2012 season in fine fashion, scoring a stoppage-time game winner for a 1-0 victory against Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center. LAST MATCH

Just as the match was seemingly dwindling toward a scoreless draw, Andre Hainault collected a deflected shot from a corner in the box and slammed a shot past Chivas USA’s heroic goalkeeper, Dan Kennedy, for the winner two minutes into stoppage time.

Dominic Kinnear again had winger Brad Davis to call upon after he missed out on last year’s MLS Cup Final, while Will Bruin partnered Brian Ching in attack.

HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault, Geoff Cameron, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe - Colin Clark, Adam Moffat, Je-Vaughn Watson, Brad Davis - Brian Ching (Macoumba Kandji 86), Will Bruin (Calen Carr 77).

TEAM NEWS Hainault has turned into a scoring threat for the Dynamo. The scorer of the dramatic stoppage-time winner,

Hainault scored twice during the Dynamo’s run to MLS Cup last year, and scored his only goal of the regular season in the next-to-last game.

“Let’s not get carried away,” head coach Dominic Kinnear said with a laugh. “He was there for a corner kick and the ball fell to him and he did well. He seems to pop up and score some important goals for us and that was a good goal for us.”

A year ago, it took the Houston Dynamo 16 games to win their first league game away from home. Kicking off a seven-game road swing while they’re awaiting completion of their new BBVA Compass Stadium, it took the Dynamo just one this year.

“There was talk about not winning on the road last year for a while, so it was good to get that win on the road and get that out of the way,” said Kinnear. “It was a good way to start the season, with the goal and a shutout. All in all, I think it was a big positive for us.”

It was also the first season opener the Dynamo have won since their first-ever match – a 5-2 win against Colorado on April 2, 2006 at Robertson Stadium. In the five opening matches since, Houston went 0-2-3.

“It’s not just [the MLS Cup Final loss] but we lost 3-0 last year to Chivas here,” said Hainault. “It was kind of funny thinking ‘Man, we were in here a couple of months ago.’ But this [win] isn’t going to get that win back.”

The Dynamo outshot Chivas USA 9-2 on the afternoon. "We made it a lot more difficult than we should have," said Dynamo forward Brian Ching. "We should have put them away a lot sooner."

For that MLS Cup Final, Brad Davis was a major absence after suffering a quadriceps injury the week before in the Eastern Conference Championship. Davis, the MLS leader in assists in 2011, played the full 90 minutes.

"It was four months before I could really do anything. I haven't had any setbacks, and that's the most important thing. I'm still building some strength in the leg, but the technical side will come sooner than later," Davis said to the Houston Chronicle.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo, March 17, 2012, 2 p.m. PT

Last Game Earthquakes 1, New England Revolution 0; March 10, 2012; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif. Chris Wondolowski picked up right where he left off in 2011, and Jon Busch produced a clean sheet with the help of his defense to lead San Jose to a 1-0 season-opening victory over the New England Revolution in front of another capacity crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium for MLS First Kick 2012 on March 10. Taking advantage of a Revs giveaway in midfield, Quakes winger Shea Salinas pounced on the loose ball and sent Wondolowski through for a one-on-one with New England net-minder Matt Reis, with the star forward making no mistake with his finish from just outside the penalty box in the 15th minute. Busch and his teammates made the lone tally hold up from there, as the two sides combined for 12 total shots, with just one each on target. While the Quakes extended a club-record streak of home sellouts to seven, Wondolowski upped his league and personal-best scoring run to six games, and Busch collected his 61st career shutout. Last Game vs. Houston Dynamo Earthquakes 1, Houston Dynamo 2; Sept. 17, 2011; Robertson Stadium; Houston, Texas The Earthquakes dropped a 2-1 decision to the Houston Dynamo on Sept. 17, 2011, at Robertson Stadium. Khari Stephenson broke a scoreless tie with a volley in the 40th minute, with Steven Beitashour and Joey Gjertsen each gaining credit for an assist as the Quakes nursed a 1-0 edge into the break. San Jose could not hold on in the second half against the eventual Eastern Conference champs, however, as former Quake Brad Davis was awarded a penalty kick in the 47th minute and converted the opportunity for the equalizer. Will Bruin, who had not scored since an April 29 hat trick against D.C. United, later produced a clinical left-footed winner in the 79th minute off assists from Luiz Camargo and Danny Cruz.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo, March 17, 2012, 2 p.m. PT city’s downtown district on May 12 against D.C. United. Dominic Kinnear, a former Quakes player (1997) who served as the San Jose head coach in 2004 and 2005, is in his seventh year in charge of the Dynamo.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES Revisiting “The Trade” The San Jose Earthquakes acquired Chris Wondolowski and a conditional pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft from Houston on June 9, 2009, in exchange for fellow forward Cam Weaver. Since the move, Wondolowski has made a meteoric leap to become one of the most prolific goal-scorers in MLS. In 2010, Wondolowski won the MLS Budweiser Golden Boot with 18 goals and finished No. 3 in Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player voting behind David Ferreira (FCD) and Edson Buddle (LA). He followed that up in 2011 by being voted by fans across the country to participate in the AT&T MLS All-Star Game, ultimately scoring 16 more goals for a share of the league lead with Volkswagen MVP Dwayne De Rosario, and earning a second straight MLS Best XI selection. Wondolowski has also drawn seven caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team since January of 2011. In all, Wondolowski has 38 goals in 73 games since rejoining the Earthquakes, compared to 10 goals in 50 games for Weaver in Houston. Additionally, with the conditional 2010 SuperDraft pick, the Quakes selected their current starting right back in Steven Beitashour. The San Jose native led the team in assists in 2011, providing seven from his position on the back line. Next Stop on Quakes’ Bay Area Tour: AT&T Park The Earthquakes’ meeting with the Houston Dynamo this Saturday, March 17, at AT&T Park in San Francisco will mark the club’s first-ever game at the current home of Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants. Having called Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara home since the franchise returned to MLS for the 2008 season, and spent the 1996-2005 seasons at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, the Earthquakes have also played previous matches at Candlestick Park, Kezar Stadium, Oakland Coliseum, Stanford Stadium, and even Negoesco Stadium in the City, among other venues. The Quakes are 2-2-3 all-time in San Francisco, with five of those games exhibitions, and one a US Open Cup match. San Jose’s only other MLS regular-season contest in San Francisco ended in a 3-0 loss to the Columbus Crew at Candlestick Park on Aug. 8, 2009. The Earthquakes have actually played host to Saturday’s opponent, the Houston Dynamo, on two prior occasions in San Francisco, a pair of scoreless draws in exhibition action at Kezar Stadium during the lead-ups to the 2007 and 2010 MLS seasons. The Quakes’ San Francisco history follows: June 30, 1998: San Jose Earthquakes 3, SF Bay Seals 0 at Kezar Stadium* July 24, 2001: San Jose Earthquakes 1, LA Galaxy 1 (LA wins 10-9 on penalty kicks) at Negoesco Stadium** Sept. 18, 2002: San Jose Earthquakes 1, Club America 1 at Candlestick Park* Feb. 9, 2003: San Jose Earthquakes 4, Shanghai Shenhua FC 0 at Negoesco Stadium* Feb. 16, 2008: San Jose Earthquakes 0, Houston Dynamo 0 at Kezar Stadium* Aug. 8, 2009: Columbus Crew 3, San Jose Earthquakes 0 at Candlestick Park*** March 17, 2010: San Jose Earthquakes 0, Houston Dynamo 0 at Kezar Stadium* * Exhibition; ** US Open Cup; *** MLS (Part of doubleheader with FC Barcelona-Chivas de Guadalajara)

Record-Breaking Winner for Wondo Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski wasted little time in opening his goal-scoring account for the 2012 campaign, the two-time MLS leader needing just under 15 minutes of the season opener against the New England Revolution on March 10 to find the back of the net. The right-footed strike from right outside the penalty area moved Wondolowski into sole possession of the all-time club record for game-winning goals, which he previously shared with Quakes great Ronald Cerritos at 15 deciders apiece. Corrales on Verge of 200 Starts for Quakes Team captain Ramiro Corrales is one starting assignment away from No. 200 for his illustrious Earthquakes career. He would become the 19th player to reach 200 career starts with one club in MLS history. Corrales is the franchise’s all-time career leader in games played (217), starts (199) and minutes played (17,741). Now in his 11th season in San Jose, he also shares the club record with 14 playoff appearances. Corrales played in his 200th game for the Earthquakes on July 2, 2011, against the New York Red Bulls. Corrales, who celebrated his 35th birthday on March 12, made his MLS debut as a 19-year-old on April 28, 1996, at the LA Galaxy. The list of players who have made 200-plus starts with one MLS club follows (bold are still active and with listed teams): 1. C.J. Brown – 290 starts for CHI 2. Jaime Moreno – 288 starts for DC 3. Cobi Jones – 281 starts for LA 4. Shalrie Joseph – 240 starts for NE 5. Kevin Hartman – 238 starts for LA 5. Jay Heaps – 238 starts for NE 7. Kerry Zavagnin – 228 starts for KC 8. Jason Kreis – 227 starts for DAL 9. Nick Garcia – 224 starts for KC

10. Mike Clark – 216 starts for CLB 11. Matt Reis – 215 starts for NE 12. Davy Arnaud – 213 starts for SKC 13. Chris Armas – 212 starts for CHI 13. Zach Thornton – 212 starts for CHI 15. Pablo Mastroeni – 211 starts for COL 16. Logan Pause – 205 starts for CHI 17. Jimmy Conrad – 203 starts for KC 18. Ben Olsen – 200 starts for DC

Wondolowski Continues Career-Best Scoring Streak Chris Wondolowski’s 15th-minute game-winner against the New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 10 extended his current MLS-best goal-scoring streak to six games dating back to last season. From Sept. 24 to Oct. 22, Wondolowski scored in the Quakes’ last five matches of the 2011 campaign, with six strikes in all during that period. That five-game stretch tied Landon Donovan of

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo, March 17, 2012, 2 p.m. PT the LA Galaxy for the longest in MLS in 2011, and was the longest active streak heading into 2012. This is the longest such run of his MLS career. Wondolowski is no stranger to streaks. His previous best was a four-game run from April 17-May 8, 2010. More notably, from Sept. 15, 2010, through March 26, 2011, Wondolowski provided all 12 Quakes goals. He tallied the club’s final 10 regular-season markers to close 2010, setting the all-time MLS record for the most consecutive goals scored by one player in league play. Wondolowski passed Carlos Ruiz, who scored nine straight for the LA Galaxy from 2002-03. He then extended his own standard by striking twice in the Quakes’ second match of 2011 at FC Dallas, following a season-opening shutout defeat at home to Real Salt Lake. The incredible string was finally halted when Simon Dawkins found the back of the Seattle Sounders FC net in the 32nd minute on April 2, 2011. Busch Also Set for 200 Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch is one away from 200 games played for his MLS career. Currently in his 11th year in the league, Busch has appeared in 199 matches for Columbus, Chicago and San Jose. He is also two starts away from 200 as an MLS net-minder. Home Sellout Streak With another capacity crowd on hand at Buck Shaw Stadium for MLS First Kick 2012 against the New England Revolution on March 10, the Earthquakes extended their franchise-record streak of consecutive home sellouts (10,525) to seven. The streak dates back to San Jose’s game against D.C. United on July 30, 2011, and also includes matches against Portland on Aug. 6, Colorado on Aug. 13, Chicago on Sept. 10, Sporting Kansas City on Oct. 1 and FC Dallas on Oct. 22. With an added stand on the South End, the attendance for the 2011 season finale with FC Dallas actually rose to 10,744 spectators. Hernandez Poised to Hit Century Mark Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez has started all 99 matches that he has played in over his first four seasons in San Jose. His next league appearance and start will thus mark milestone No. 100 for the franchise in each category. Meanwhile, Hernandez is steadily climbing the all-time club charts, as he is one start away from tying Eddie Lewis (1996-99) for No. 8 on that list, and ninth in minutes played (8,757), right behind Lewis (8,867). Quakes Say Goodbye to Opening Woes In defeating New England for MLS First Kick 2012 at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 10, the Earthquakes put an end to a pair of unsavory streaks. Prior to the 1-0 decision against the Revolution, the Quakes had not won in their season opener since a 2-1 triumph at the Colorado Rapids on April 12, 2003, going 0-5-1 to kick off the previous six campaigns. The stretch included four straight losses since returning to MLS for the 2008 season, the last three of them coming at home inside Buck Shaw, 1-0 to the Revs in 2009, 3-0 to Real Salt Lake in 2010, and 1-0 again to RSL a year ago. The Quakes also had not won a home opener since a 2-1 victory over the Revs on April 6, 2002, at Spartan Stadium, going 0-4-3 since then. San Jose is now 6-8-1 all-time in season openers, and 5-7-3 in home openers. And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk and goalkeeper Zack Thornton made a handful of appearances for the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively, in 2011, but neither player currently appears on an MLS roster. Corrales was the youngest to play in MLS in 1996 as a 19-year-old. Welcome Back, Shea To mark his return to the franchise that selected him with its top pick (2nd Round, 15th Overall) of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas assisted on the game-winning goal against the New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 10. Salinas ran onto a loose ball inside the New England half, took two dribbles and fed Chris Wondolowski forward for a one-on-one with Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis, with the star striker making no mistake with his right foot from just outside the penalty area in the 15th minute. Salinas played the full 90 minutes. He spent the first two seasons of his professional career in San Jose, before being chosen by the Philadelphia Union during the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft. He played with the Union in 2010, and with Vancouver Whitecaps FC in 2011, before the Quakes reacquired him via trade on Nov. 30. Honduran Hook-Up San Jose’s new Honduran connection of center back Victor Bernardez and midfielder Marvin Chavez made both their club and home debuts in front of the Earthquakes faithful at Buck Shaw Stadium against the New England Revolution on March 10. Bernardez recovered in time from an injury suffered during the second game of the Portland Preseason Tournament, to make his first MLS appearance and play a significant role in the 1-0 shutout victory, while Chavez also started and remained in the match for 63 minutes before being replaced by Simon Dawkins. Bernardez and Chavez both hail from the same northern port city of La Ceiba, Honduras. Wondolowski Aiming for No. 1 on Quakes’ Career Goals List Chris Wondolowski continues to chase Ronald Cerritos for No. 1 on the franchise career goals list. The Danville native has scored seven goals over the last six matches dating back to the end of the 2011 season, to increase his career haul in San Jose to 38. Cerritos is the club’s all-time leader with 61 goals from 1997-2001 and 2005. Opara Named to U.S. U-23 Roster Ahead of Olympic Qualifying Earthquakes defender Ike Opara was among 20 players named by head coach Caleb Porter earlier this week to the U.S. U-23 camp roster for CONCACAF Olympic qualifying from March 22-April 2. Opara was previously in camp with the U-23s from Feb. 19-29. He wore the captain’s armband and played all 90 minutes as the Americans blanked Mexico on Feb. 29, 2-0, at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Opara will be unavailable to the Earthquakes against the Houston Dynamo on March 17, as the U-23 group convened in Nashville, Tenn., on March 13, with the official 20-player roster set to be finalized on March 20. The U.S. faces Cuba on March 22 (6

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo, March 17, 2012, 2 p.m. PT p.m. PT), Canada on March 24 (4 p.m. PT) and El Salvador on March 26 (6 p.m. PT) during Group A action at LP Field in Nashville. All three games will be televised by Universal Sports Network and Telemundo. The top two squads from two groups advance to the semifinal round, with the two semifinal winners earning berths to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, in July. Wondolowski’s 2011 Campaign Again Among the Most Prolific in Club History For the second straight season in 2011, Chris Wondolowski posted one of the top five goal-scoring outputs in Earthquakes history. With his first-half penalty-kick goal against FC Dallas on Oct. 22 at Buck Shaw Stadium, Wondolowski put the finishing touches on San Jose’s second-best single-season scoring performance, falling two strikes short only of his own standard in 2010. Wondolowski is the only player in Earthquakes history to score 15 goals or more twice in his career. He and Ronald Cerritos (12 in 1997, 13 in 1998, 15 in 1999 and 11 in 2001) are the only players in club history to produce multiple seasons with double-digit goal totals. The five best single-season goal outputs in club history follow: 1. Chris Wondolowski – 18 goals in 2010 2. Chris Wondolowski – 16 goals in 2011 3. Ronald Cerritos – 15 goals in 1999 4. Ariel Graziani – 14 goals in 2002 5. Ronald Cerritos – 13 goals in 1998 5. Paul Bravo – 13 goals in 1996 Wondolowski Joins Elite Goal-Scoring Club Chris Wondolowski became the ninth player in MLS history to score 15 or more goals in back-to-back seasons with his strike against Seattle Sounders FC on Oct. 15, 2011, at CenturyLink Field. In addition, Wondolowski’s two-year output of 34 goals in 2010-11, ranks No. 8 all-time. The Danville native scored 18 in 2010 to win the Budweiser Golden Boot and 16 more in 2011 for a share of the league lead. Below is a list of players who have scored 15 or more goals in back-to-back seasons, followed by the top 10 two-year performances in league history: Chris Wondolowski – 2010 (18), 2011 (16) Dwayne De Rosario – 2010 (15), 2011 (16) Carlos Ruiz – 2002 (24), 2003 (15) Taylor Twellman – 2002 (23), 2003 (15) Diego Serna – 2000 (16), 2001 (15) Roy Lassiter – 1998 (18), 1999 (18) Stern John – 1998 (26), 1999 (18) Jaime Moreno – 1997 (16), 1998 (16) Raul Diaz Arce – 1996 (23), 1997 (15), 1998 (18) 1. Stern John – 44 goals in 1998-99 2. Carlos Ruiz – 39 goals in 2002-03 3. Raul Diaz Arce – 38 goals in 1996-97 3. Taylor Twellman – 38 goals in 2002-03 5. Roy Lassiter – 37 goals in 1996-97 6. Roy Lassiter – 36 goals in 1998-99 7. Mamadou Diallo – 35 goals in 2000-01 8. Chris Wondolowski – 34 goals in 2010-11 9. Juan Pablo Angel – 33 in 2007-08 9. Raul Diaz Arce – 33 in 1997-98 Earthquakes, Wondolowski Support Street Soccer USA Street Soccer USA, a non-profit organization that seeks to end homelessness through sports, has once again partnered with two-time MLS leading goal-scorer Chris Wondolowski in 2012 to make a difference in the lives of the homeless in the Bay Area through the “One Goal at a Time” campaign. For every goal Wondolowski scores during the 2012 season, the Quakes star has pledged a $100 donation to Street Soccer USA (SSUSA), and is asking fans to join in his mission. Additionally, the Earthquakes Community Fund will match Wondolowski’s donations. Wondolowski, who has been a national ambassador for SSUSA since August of 2011, already opened his scoring account with a goal on March 10. In other recent community news, the Earthquakes set up bins all around Buck Shaw Stadium for an equipment drive during the MLS First Kick match with the New England Revolution on March 10, to collect donations for San Jose midfielder Jean-Marc Alexandre’s youth soccer academy in his hometown of Verrettes, Haiti. Busch Among MLS Career Leaders in Several Categories With a current mark of .753, Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch is second on Major League Soccer’s all-time chart in career saves percentage. He trails only Brad Friedel, currently of Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League, who produced a mark of .756 over 38 games with the Columbus Crew in 1996-97. Busch picked up the 61st clean sheet of his 11-year MLS career on March 10 in a 1-0 season-opening win over the New England Revolution at Buck Shaw Stadium. He is eighth among the all-time leaders. Busch has posted 15 shutouts in his two-plus seasons as the starter in San Jose, to go along with his 21 during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire, and 25 in five seasons (2002-06) with the Columbus Crew. Next on the list is former MLS and U.S. Men’s National Team standout Tony Meola with 62. Busch is also No. 8 all-time in saves in MLS history with 802 over his career.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo, March 17, 2012, 2 p.m. PT Busch the Shot-Stopper Third-year Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch led the league in saves in 2011 with 113 in 33 matches, edging out New England Revolution net-minder Matt Reis, who finished with 111 saves in 27 games played. Dawkins Back for a Second Season in MLS On Feb. 14, the Earthquakes and English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur reached a second season-long loan agreement to bring midfielder Simon Dawkins back to San Jose. Dawkins completed his first season in MLS with six goals, second-best on the team behind Chris Wondolowski’s 16, and two assists over 26 games, 19 of them starts. The then-23-year-old native of Edgware, England, was named the 21st-best player in MLS under the age of 24 according to MLSsoccer.com’s annual 24 Under 24 list unveiled in September of 2011. Dawkins originally joined the club on loan from Spurs on March 16, 2011. 2012 Newcomers General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle and head coach Frank Yallop brought in a number of new acquisitions through several transactions during a busy offseason to bolster the Earthquakes lineup and add bench depth. They first traded for Shea Salinas, who was selected by the Quakes in the second round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft and spent two seasons in San Jose prior to being picked up by the Philadelphia Union in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft. In December, the Quakes negotiated trades for a midfield tandem with MLS Cup Playoffs experience in Jean-Marc Alexandre and Marvin Chavez, formerly of Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas, respectively. At the end of the month, San Jose signed Chavez’s Honduran compatriot, veteran center back Victor Bernardez. The team then inked Turkish forward Sercan Guvenisik in January and Colombian playmaker Tressor Moreno in February. In early March, the club signed a pair of trialists and second-year professionals in goalkeeper Evan Newton and defender Josh Suggs. 2012 Draft Class The San Jose Earthquakes’ 2012 draft class is headlined by winger Sam Garza, the No. 6 overall selection in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Garza is a Generation adidas player who spent his sophomore and junior seasons of eligibility at UC Santa Barbara after earning conference newcomer of the year honors as a true freshman at Denver in 2008, and missing 2009 through injury. The Quakes also signed midfielder Jacob Hustedt, a second-round pick (No. 25 overall) in the SuperDraft out of Washington, and forward Cesar Diaz Pizarro, their top selection in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft (2nd round, No. 25) from UC Riverside. Hat Trick Heroes San Jose’s striking tandem of Chris Wondolowski and Steven Lenhart each have the distinction of having produced a hat trick in a Quakes uniform. Of just five three-goal hat tricks in franchise history, the duo has accounted for three. Wondolowski has achieved the feat twice, at Toronto FC on Sept. 25, 2010, and at home against Chivas USA on Oct. 20, 2010, the latter in just 50 minutes on the pitch. Lenhart collected his hat trick in a resounding 4-2 victory at D.C. United on June 11, 2011. In the 10 matches that have seen both players in head coach Frank Yallop’s starting lineup, the Quakes have scored 13 times for a 1.30 average, with 10 of those goals either tallied or assisted by Wondolowski or Lenhart. That goals-per-game average has dipped to 1.12 over the other 25 contests since Lenhart joined the Quakes for the 2011 season. Wondolowski is Mr. October Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski is earning the reputation of Mr. October for his fall goal-scoring sprees. He is tied for No. 1 all-time in MLS history for career regular-season goals scored in October, with 11. He shares that spot with Edson Buddle, back with the LA Galaxy for the 2012 campaign after a season in Europe, and D.C. United’s Dwayne De Rosario, a former teammate. Wondolowski’s first-half penalty-kick goal during a 4-2 win over FC Dallas last Oct. 22 in the 2011 season finale at Buck Shaw Stadium enabled him to pass Christian Gomez on the list and catch Buddle and De Rosario at the top. Wondolowski’s entire October haul has come in nine appearances over the last two seasons, more than double the next player on the list (DeRosario with five) over that same time period. Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 95-9-24 in their last 128 matches when scoring first, dating back to July 8, 2000. They finished 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, an unbeaten 12-0-2 in 2010 and 7-4-5 last season. With a 1-0 triumph over the New England Revolution for MLS First Kick on March 10, they are off to a 1-0-0 start to the 2012 campaign. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010, 7-4-5 in 2011, and 1-0-0 early in 2012. The Quakes are 70-8-18 (.823) in seven-plus seasons under Yallop when striking first. Halftime Success The Earthquakes remain amongst the best in league history in holding onto a halftime lead. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Earthquakes are 70-3-15 in games when leading at the half, including impressive marks of 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo, March 17, 2012, 2 p.m. PT 0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. They are off to a 1-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. Assist Anecdotes Steven Beitashour, who led the Earthquakes with seven assists in 2011, tying for 11th in MLS, was not credited with his first career assist until June 4, 2011, marking the 12th game of the season … The first time that Beitashour was even on the bench for the Quakes in 2011 was the eighth game on May 11, making his season debut in a starting role … All seven of Beitashour’s assists came in a furious stretch of 22 contests to close the season for the young right back, with the first three of them coming on Steven Lenhart goals … A total of 15 different Quakes players were credited with assists on Wondolowski’s 16 strikes in 2011, with Rafael Baca, Ramiro Corrales, Simon Dawkins and former players Ryan Johnson and Jacob Peterson registering two apiece … Two of the three assists provided by Baca during his rookie season out of Loyola Marymount came on Wondolowski goals, vs. Chicago on Sept. 10 and in Seattle on Oct. 15. Quakes Set Career Milestones for Minutes Played A number of current Earthquakes set new all-time career highs for minutes played in a single season in 2011. The list includes: Steven Beitashour – 1,655; Previous record: 640 in 2010 Jon Busch – 2,970; Previous high: 2,700 in 2008 and 2009 with Chicago Fire Jason Hernandez – 2,491; Previous high: 2,451 in 2008 Justin Morrow – 810; Previous high: 59 in 2010 Brad Ring – 1,600; Previous high: 435 in 2010 Khari Stephenson – 2,256; Previous high: 776 in 2010 Chris Wondolowski – 2,672; Previous high: 2,308 in 2010 Ramiro Corrales’ 2,552 minutes were the single-season high of his San Jose career, but fell short of the 2,659 minutes he played in New York/New Jersey in 1999. Likewise, Sam Cronin played 1,903 minutes, a high for his Earthquakes career, but short of his 2,363 minutes as a rookie in 2009 for Toronto FC. Additionally, newcomers Jean-Marc Alexandre (703; Previous high: 494 in 2010), Marvin Chavez (2,521; Previous high: 818 in 2010) and Shea Salinas (1,695; Previous high: 1,306 in 2009 with San Jose Earthquakes) recorded career highs in minutes in 2011 for their former clubs, Real Salt Lake, FC Dallas and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, respectively. Quakes Get Go-Ahead from San Jose Planning Commission on New Stadium The San Jose Planning Commission voted 6-0 to uphold the Earthquakes’ Planned Development Permit on Feb. 22, paving the way for the club to break ground on its new stadium at 1125 Coleman Avenue. The Earthquakes’ PD Permit was initially consented for approval by city planners on Dec. 14, but was appealed by a Newhall Neighborhood Association member on Jan. 1. Fans clad in Earthquakes colors filled the council chambers to capacity. Owner Lew Wolff, Club President Dave Kaval and MLS President Mark Abbott spoke on behalf of the Quakes, among numerous community members and stakeholders, for over two hours before the commission closed discussion and took action on the appeal. The club has already sold 10 of 12 available field-level luxury suites for its new stadium, generating over $3.5 million in revenue for the project. For more information about the remaining suites, visit www.sjearthquakes.com/newstadium, email [email protected] or call 408-556-7700. Quakes Feature Comprehensive Broadcast Partnerships in 2012 For the first time in club history, the San Jose Earthquakes have all of their games on television, English radio and Spanish radio during the 2012 season. DYNAMO VS. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES – MEETING OLD FRIENDS IN SAN FRANCISCO The Houston Dynamo continue their seven‐game season‐opening road trip with a visit to San Francisco to

renew their rivalry with the San Jose Earthquakes. The rivalry involves history and connections, as the

Earthquakes moved to Houston before the 2006 season, while the new‐edition Earthquakes are trying to

recreate the championship form of past years before they move into a new stadium in 2013 or 2014. The

St. Patrick’s Day encounter comes after each club won its season‐opening match 1‐0, and the venue is AT&T

Park, the home of the San Francisco Giants. It will be the first time the Dynamo play in San Francisco and

the first time the Quakes play at AT&T Park. Houston won its opening game of 2012 with a dramatic

stoppage‐time goal from defender Andre Hainault (90+2’) to seize a 1‐0 triumph at The Home Depot Center

on Sunday. The road win reversed Houston’s 2011 road form, in which the club went 16 games before

recording a road victory. The Quakes, meanwhile, received a 15th‐minute game‐winner from Chris

Wondolowski, the league’s leading scorer over the past two seasons combined. The series between San Jose

and Houston has been even, with four wins for each club and one draw in nine meetings along with an even

goal differential (13 GF, 13 GA). In road games, the Dynamo are 1‐3‐1 in five meetings at Buck Shaw

Stadium. Each club won at home in 2011, with San Jose capturing a 2‐0 win on June 4 in Santa Clara behind

goals from Steven Lenhart and Simon Dawkins. Houston earned a 2‐1 win at Robertson Stadium on Sept.

17, with Will Bruin scoring the winner on 79 minutes after Brad Davis equalized with a penalty kick early in

the second half. Khari Stephenson had given the Quakes a lead in the 40th minute. After meeting twice or

more in the first four seasons of the rivalry, Saturday’s fixture is the lone match between the clubs in 2012

due to the new unbalanced schedule.

DYNAMO NOTES First Road Win of 2012: Houston’s 1‐0 win over Chivas USA erased bad memories of the 2011 road schedule.

Amazingly, it took Houston 16 games to record its first road win of the 2011 campaign. After a 0‐6‐9 start, the

Dynamo defeated FC Dallas 1‐0 at Pizza Hut Park on September 24 on Geoff Cameron’s goal in the 87th minute.

The win started a road‐roll for the Dynamo, which won its final two games (at Portland and Philadelphia) of the

regular season before winning two road playoff games (Philadelphia and Sporting KC). That stretch included a

7‐1 record against Western Conference teams. Houston went 9‐6‐4 in 2011 against its former conference.

Page 28: Game Guide: SJ-HOU

San Jose ties: There are several ties between the Earthquakes and Dynamo after the original San Jose

franchise shifted to Houston after the 2005 season. Seven Dynamo coaches and players have previous

experience with San Jose, including forward Brian Ching, midfielder Brad Davis and forward Cam Weaver.

Dynamo coaches Dominic Kinnear, Wade Barrett, and Tim Hanley have all played for San Jose clubs in the

past, and Kinnear and Hanley have both coached on the Earthquakes staff. Eddie Robinson, now a Dynamo

Academy assistant coach and TV color commentator, played for the Quakes as well.

San Jose head coach Frank Yallop coached Ching, Davis, Weaver, Barrett and Robinson and worked with

Kinnear and Hanley. San Jose forward Chris Wondolowski scored eight goals in 58 appearances in all

competitions for the Dynamo from 2006‐09.

Andre Hainault has scored the Dynamo’s last two game‐winning goals. The Canadian defender scored the

opening goal in Houston’s 2‐0 win over Sporting Kansas City in the 2011 Eastern Conference final before

securing three points for the Orange with Sunday’s stoppage‐time goal at Chivas USA.

Hainault is enjoying a goal‐scoring streak that defies logic given his goal‐scoring record. Hainault scored 2

goals in the first 88 games of his Dynamo career (all competitions). With Sunday’s winner, the Montreal‐

native has now scored 4 goals in his last 7 games (10/14/11 @ Portland, 10/30/11 @ Philadelphia, 11/6/11 @

Sporting Kansas City, and Sunday @ Chivas.) Since 10/14/11, Hainault and Alvaro Saborio of Real Salt Lake

have the most goals in MLS, with 4 each. (playoffs included, CONCACAF Champions League not included)

Clean Sheets: The Dynamo have earned three clean sheets in their last four games, playoffs included

(11/3/11, 1‐0 vs. PHI; 11/6/11, 2‐0 @ SKC; and 3/11/12 @ CHV, 1‐0).

First: Houston recorded its first‐ever opening day win on the road on Sunday. It was also the Dynamo’s

first season‐opening win since 2006 (home or road). More details in chart below.

Clutch: Hainault’s game‐winner two minutes into stoppage time continued a run of late goals for Houston

in 2011. Last year, the Dynamo scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, second best in MLS (Seattle).

Late Winners: Hainault’s goal was the first Dynamo goal in extra time since Alex Dixon earned a vital 3‐2 win over Real Salt Lake at Robertson Stadium on Aug. 20, 2011. Three days earlier, Bobby Boswell earned a

1‐1 tie at New England with a 90th‐minute equalizer.

Reserves: The Dynamo Reserves defeated Colorado Rapids 1‐0 on Tuesday at Houston Amateur Sports

Park. Houston’s chances were limited, but in the 80th minute rookie Brian Ownby pounced onto the

rebound of Jermaine Taylor’s shot and buried it for a 1‐0 win. Tyler Deric earned the shutout in goal.

Sarkodie Call‐Up: Dynamo defender Kofi Sarkodie was called into the U.S. men’s national team training

camp that began March 13 in Nashville to begin final preparations for the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic

Qualifying tournament. Final roster for the tournament is due March 20.

Offseason additions: The Dynamo’s offseason consisted mostly of moves to add depth to a core of returning

starters. Houston acquired three players via draft (F‐Colin Rolfe, D‐Warren Creavalle and M‐Brian

Ownby), three via trade (D/M‐Nathan Sturgis, F‐Macoumba Kandji and F‐Brian Ching), and one trialist

signing (GK‐Erich Marscheider).

Page 29: Game Guide: SJ-HOU

Preseason: Forward Will Bruin led the Dynamo offense in the preseason with four goals, including the club’s lone

goal in four matches in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in Orlando, a header goal versus Montreal. Brian Ownby (3)

Colin Clark (2), Colin Rolfe (2) Nathan Sturgis (2) rounded out the Dynamo scoring leaders.

With construction continuing at BBVA Compass Stadium, the Dynamo’s new downtown facility, the club is

forced to begin its season with seven games on the road. After road games with Chivas USA, San Jose, Seattle,

Chicago, Columbus, DC United and New York, Houston opens its new stadium against DC United on May 12.

2011 Dynamo Season Opener: Lost 1‐0 vs. Philadelphia at Robertson Stadium (Danny Califf 5’).

First Goal of 2011: Geoff Cameron (Game 2 @ SEA on 3/25)

First Win of 2011: 3‐1 vs. Vancouver on 4/10 (Game 4) after an 0‐1‐2 start. Cam Weaver, Bobby Boswell and Will

Bruin tallied the goals.

UP NEXT: WEST COAST SWING ENDS IN SEATTLE The Dynamo will continue to face Western Conference opposition to begin the 2012 season, with trips to the Bay

Area and Seattle the next two weeks. Houston will play the Seattle Sounders on Friday, March 23 on NBC Sports

Network. After a two‐week break, the Dynamo resume their seven‐match road trek with a trip to Chicago on

Sunday, April 15.   OPENING DAY NOTES Houston is 2‐2‐3 all‐time in MLS opening day games after defeating Chivas 1‐0 on Opening Day 2012.
