MLS GAME INFORMATION

HOUSTON DYNAMO vs SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES BBVA COMPASS STADIUM, Houston, Texas

March 30, 2013 (WEEK 5, MLS Game #40) 7:30 p.m. CT (KPRC-NBC; CSN-CA+) The Houston Dynamo will be looking to equal Major League Soccer against an old foe, when the San Jose Earthquakes come to BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday evening. The two teams share a common progeny, and it’s been a pitched rivalry since the Dynamo’s inception and the Quakes’ return. The Dynamo can extend their home unbeaten streak to an MLS-record 34 games; they are coming off a 2-1 come-from-behind win against Vancouver. The Earthquakes hit the road after a 1-0 home win against Seattle, running their unbeaten streak to three games. REFEREE: Jose Carlos Rivero. SAR (bench): Peter Manikowski; JAR (opposite): Mark Cahen; 4th: Armando Villarreal MLS Career: 9 games; FC/gm: 26.6; Y/gm: 4.0; R: 4; pens: 4 DISABLED LIST: SJ: Mehdi Ballouchy SUSPENDED: none INTERNATIONAL ABSENCES: none HEAD-TO-HEAD ALL-TIME (10 meetings): Dynamo 5 wins, 14 goals … Earthquakes 4 wins, 13 goals … Ties 1 AT HOUSTON (4 meetings): Dynamo 3 wins, 8 goals … Earthquakes 1 win, 5 goals … Ties 0 LAST YEAR (MLS): 3/17: SJ 0, HOU 1 (Davis 14)

This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. The Dynamo have won the last two meetings between the teams, including the only encounter a season ago, a

1-0 victory at AT&T Park in San Francisco on March 17. The two teams have shared a pitched rivalry since the Earthquakes returned to the league in 2008, after the

Dynamo moved to Houston from San Jose in 2006. They had split their season series in each of the first four years after the Quakes’ return before last year.

Coaches record: Dominic Kinnear vs. SJ: P10 W5 L4 D1… Frank Yallop vs. HOU: P16 W6 L7 D3 HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo continued their long home undefeated streak, overcoming a first-half deficit for a 2-1 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday evening at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo are in a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with 6 points from 3 matches. LAST MATCH

The visitors took the lead in the 36th minute. Striker Darren Mattocks took a feed from rookie Erik Hurtado and turned his marker, ripping a shot from 22 yards over Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall and into the right corner of the goal.

The Dynamo pulled even 10 minutes after the second-half restart. A well-worked combination play on the right flank gave Ricardo Clark room to curl a ball to the top of the six-yard box, where Giles Barnes headed it across ‘Caps goalkeeper Joe Cannon for his first MLS goal.

The winner came seven minutes later. Will Bruin nodded down Adam Moffat’s corner, then Warren Creavalle got the final touch to bundle it home after a scrum in front of goal.

Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made three changes to the team that suffered a 3-2 loss to FC Dallas in Frisco. Eric Brunner came into central defense and Warren Creavalle and Andrew Driver started in wide midfield positions, with Jermaine Taylor, Boniek Garcia and Brad Davis all away on international duty.

HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-1-1): Tally Hall - Kofi Sarkodie, Eric Brunner, Bobby Boswell, Corey Ashe - Warren Creavalle (Omar Cummings 90), Ricardo Clark, Adam Moffat, Andrew Driver - Giles Barnes (Luiz Camargo 81) - Will Bruin (Cam Weaver 79).

TEAM NEWS The Dynamo are now one result away from equaling the league’s all-time regular-season home unbeaten

streak of 34 games, set by Real Salt Lake from 2009-11. “I’m happy how the guys played well as a whole. I’m happy we won the game because there are some teams

that are sprinting away with wins in the Eastern Conference,” said Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear. “We talk about players and victories and when the guys step on the field, they know the expectations are to try and win the game.”

Said forward Giles Barnes: “Our home is a fortress so we always have a little bit of an extra lift, kind of like a 12th man. We thought we could come here and get the two losses out of our system.”

With Boniek Garcia on national team duty with Honduras, Warren Creavalle made his first start of the season and scored his first professional goal. He had recorded his first assist of the year in the season opener.

“We just have to take these opportunities and do what you can do. Hopefully we can contribute and show that we don’t need to miss a beat when there are players out,” said Creavalle.

Andrew Driver made his first MLS start, coming in for Brad Davis wide on the left of midfield. Driver had come on as a substitute in three consecutive matches, including both legs of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

Eric Brunner was the third replacement for a player on international duty, with Jermaine Taylor posted with Jamaica. For Brunner it was his Dynamo debut, after coming to the club from Portland in the offseason.

“We don’t talk about fill-ins, we talk about players and victories,” Kinnear said. “They’re not here to replace somebody; they’re here to keep us winning. When we step on the field they know the expectation is to try and win. Those guys did that tonight.”

Making his third start as the underneath striker, Barnes netted his first MLS goal. It was his second goal in a Dynamo uniform, having scored last year in the CONCACAF Champions League.

“It was great to get off the mark. I think I’ve had a chance to score in every game we played, so I knew I was due one,” said Barnes. “It was good to get off the mark and it was good we got the win as well.”

A year ago, Will Bruin started the season without a goal in his first three games after a rookie season when he scored 5 times. But he scored four goals over the next three games on his way to an 11-goal campaign. Bruin is without a goal in the first three games this year.

“That Vancouver game, it felt like there was a triangle around me,” Bruin said. “It’s frustrating during the game, but I’m trying to work on that. If I get frustrated, it ruins other aspects of my game. I feel like if I keep putting myself in good spots the goals will come.”

Omar Cummings also made his Dynamo debut, after he was obtained from Colorado in the offseason and underwent knee surgery in January. “You’re not playing and then not being with the team in preseason, you miss a lot of the fundamentals like how they play and how the coach wants things,” Cummings said. Said Barnes: “You look at Omar, he’s very strong. Credit to him the way he’s kept himself in shape. He’s missed all of preseason and if you look at him he’s almost fit.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes ran their undefeated streak to three matches, getting the game’s only goal for a win against Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes sit in a tie for second place in the Western Conference with 7 points from 4 matches. LAST MATCH

The game's lone goal came seconds into first-half stoppage time. A long clearance skidded off the head of Seattle defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and Chris Wondolowski brought the ball down with the outside of his right foot, ripping a shot from 22 yards that barely beat Sounders FC goalkeeper Michael Gspurning with a ricochet off the far post.

Quakes head coach Frank Yallop made two changes to the team that came back for a late 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. Nana Attakora and Dan Gargan came into the back four with Victor Bernardez and Justin Morrow both away on international duty.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Ty Harden, Jason Hernandez, Nana Attakora, Dan Gargan - Shea Salinas, Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca, Ramiro Corrales - Chris Wondolowski, Adam Jahn.

TEAM NEWS The Earthquakes recorded their first shutout of the season despite missing three first-choice defenders, two to

international duty (Víctor Bernárdez, Justin Morrow) and one to injury (Steven Beitashour). “It was a solid performance all the way around for us. Seattle is a good team and they created a lot of

dangerous situations, but our back four did a very good job and didn’t let them get many clear-cut chances,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “We had three very good chances to score and I feel that we deserved the win tonight. I am proud of the effort.”

Nana Attakora started in central defense, his first league appearance since 2011, when he made six appearances for San Jose after being acquired in a trade with Toronto FC.

“I thought he was outstanding tonight,” Yallop said. “I put him out on the field when he wasn’t ready to play [in 2011], and I think it was unfair for me to do that last time he was here. We always wanted to keep him and re-sign him. ... It’s just good to have him back, because we never wanted to lose him.”

Said Attakora: “I’m happy I got to do it at home. I felt like I needed to prove to the people here what I’m capable of doing. I don’t think I got a chance to do that in 2011, so ... I’m happy with the way things went.”

Chris Wondolowski scored his second goal of the season, his first from open play. “He had some great chances tonight and he finished the hardest one of all of them,” said Yallop. “That is what I like about Chris. He

never hangs his head and he keeps pushing, looking for the opportunities even if he has missed some earlier in the game. That was a great finish.”

It was a second consecutive home win for the Quakes after opening their Buck Shaw Stadium slate with a loss to Real Salt Lake.

“It was a great win for our team. Whenever you walk out on your home pitch, you’re thinking three points. It feels good to get an early test with a [Western] Conference opponent who is always tough to beat,” said Yallop. There was an electric atmosphere and we definitely fed off of that.”

Said midfielder Shea Salinas: “We’re feeling momentum. We played well in Columbus; we had a great week of practice and tonight we took a step closer to where we want to be as a team. Our midfield play was fluid, creating chances for our strikers. Every guy is upping their play and, until we are back to full strength on our roster, we are going to need that every night.”

DYNAMO HOST EARTHQUAKES WITH CHANCE TO TIE HOME UNBEATEN STREAK RECORD The Houston Dynamo (2‐1‐0; 6 points) welcome the San Jose Earthquakes (2‐1‐1; 7 points) to BBVA Compass Stadium on

Saturday night with the opportunity to match Real Salt Lake’s MLS record 34‐game home unbeaten streak with a win or a tie

(more details on page 2). The Dynamo are unbeaten in 33 consecutive home games in all competitions (includes playoffs and

Champions League). Houston staged a 2‐1 comeback win on Saturday over the Vancouver Whitecaps behind goals from Giles

Barnes and Warren Creavalle. San Jose earned a 1‐0 win over the Seattle Sounders on Saturday, with Chris Wondolowski

scoring the game‐winning goal.

HOUSTON VS. SAN JOSE The Dynamo are 5‐4‐1 all‐time against the Earthquakes, including a 3‐1 mark in home games. The clubs met once in 2012 – on

St. Patrick’s Day at AT&T Park in San Francisco – and the Dynamo secured a 1‐0 win on Brad Davis’ penalty goal. It was San

Jose’s lone home loss of the regular season and one of only two times the ‘Quakes were shut out last season. In their last

meeting in Houston, the Dynamo earned a 2‐1 win on Sept. 17, 2011.

DYNAMO NOTES Dynamo rally for 2‐1 win over Vancouver to extend home streak to 33 games: Giles Barnes and Warren Creavalle scored

goals seven minutes apart in the second half for a 2‐1 comeback win for the Dynamo over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on

Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium. With the win, the Dynamo extended their home unbeaten streak to 33 games in all

competitions (including Champions League and playoffs). The Dynamo earned the win with starting roles for Andrew Driver,

Eric Brunner and Creavalle, who started their first regular season game this campaign in place of midfielders Brad Davis and

Boniek Garcia and defender Jermaine Taylor. The three were unavailable due to international duty for last week’s World

Cup qualifiers. Vancouver striker Darren Mattocks opened the scoring in the 36th minute, receiving a pass from Erik Hurtado

before turning and cracking a shot from 25 yards into the upper corner for a 1‐0 Caps lead. The Dynamo preserved the 2‐1

lead to end a two‐game losing streak and send Vancouver to its first loss of the season.

San Jose connections: There are several ties between the Earthquakes and Dynamo after the original San Jose franchise shifted

to Houston after the 2005 season. Eight Dynamo coaches and players have previous experience with San Jose, including

forward Brian Ching, midfielders Brad Davis and Ricardo Clark and forward Cam Weaver. Dynamo coaches Dominic

Kinnear, Wade Barrett, and Tim Hanley have all played for San Jose clubs in the past, and Kinnear and Hanley have both

coached on the Earthquakes staff. Eddie Robinson, now a Dynamo Academy assistant coach and TV color commentator,

played for the Quakes as well.

DYNAMO IN HISTORIC HOME TERRITORY

The Dynamo can tie Real Salt Lake for the longest home unbeaten streak in MLS history on Saturday: The Dynamo are

unbeaten in 33 consecutive home games in all competitions, including: 27 regular season games, a 2011 playoff win over

Philadelphia, two Champions League games in 2012, playoff victories over Sporting KC and D.C. United in 2012 and a Champions

League win over Santos Laguna on March 5, 2013. With a win or a tie against San Jose, the Dynamo will match the MLS record for

consecutive home games without defeat (34 games), held by Real Salt Lake (2009‐11).

The Dynamo also have the second‐longest regular season home unbeaten streak in MLS history: The Dynamo extended their

regular season home unbeaten streak to 27 games with a 2‐1 win over Vancouver on Saturday. It is the second‐longest streak in

league history. If Houston wins its next three home games (the third is on April 28 vs. Colorado), it will break Real Salt Lake’s

regular season record of 29 games. The Dynamo have not lost a home game in over 20 months, with their last home defeat on June

Brazil continued this week with two games within the ten‐game CONCACAF Hexagonal round, and three Dynamo players

featured for their respective national teams. Midfielder Brad Davis came off the bench in the 71st minute of Tuesday’s 0‐0

draw at Mexico. Defender Jermaine Taylor played 90 minutes in both of Jamaicaʹs World Cup qualifiers. The Reggae

Boyz tied Panama, 1‐1 at home last Friday, before losing at Costa Rica 2‐0 on Tuesday. Midfielder Boniek Garcia also added

two more caps to his resume, playing 90 minutes in both of Hondurasʹ Hexagonal matches. Los Catrachos came from behind

to tie Mexico, 2‐2, in San Pedro Sula, Honduras last Friday, before falling on the road to Panama 2‐0 on Tuesday. All three

players are available for selection on Saturday vs. San Jose.

Better late than never: The Dynamo have scored 4 of 6 goals in the 2013 regular season after the 75th minute, with two late

goals in a 2‐0 win over D.C. United on March 2 and a pair of late tallies on March 17 in Dallas. The late goals continue a

trend for Houston, which set a franchise record with 17 goals in the final 15 minutes of games in 2012 after scoring 14 late

goals in 2011. The 17 late goals in a season were historic, with only the 2012 San Jose Earthquakes (22) and 2009 Real Salt

Lake (19) scoring more goals after the 75th minute since 2006 (more details on page 5). The Dynamo also scored a late goal

Champions League) and 14 goals in 2006 (11 in regular season and three in the playoffs).

Hall breaks former mentor Pat Onstad’s shutout record: Goalkeeper Tally Hall recorded 12 shutouts in the 2012 regular

season, eclipsing former teammate Pat Onstad, who set an individual franchise record with 11 shutouts in 2007, when the

club had a total of 13 clean sheets in 30 regular season games. Hall finished tied for second in the league in shutouts, trailing

Jimmy Nielsen of Sporting Kansas City (15).

in 2012, with 55.93% possession in the regular season. Houston won the possession battle in 27 of 34 regular season games.

In addition, the Dynamo’s 81.5% passing accuracy was second best in the league.

years, with 8 goals (a career‐high) and 12 assists in 2012, after the midfielder reached 20 with 4 goals and 16 assists (another

career‐high) in 2011. Davis’ achievement each of the last two years is remarkable because no other player in Dynamo history

has ever recorded 20 combined goals and assists in a single regular season. Davis also has four of the best five combined

2012, with the goals in the final 15 minutes of matches accounting for a full 35% of its goals.

With his start vs. Seattle, Corrales played in his 299th career MLS match (including games played for the Miami Fusion and MetroStars). He has started each of San Jose’s four games this season and leads the team with two assists. Morrow Returns From U.S. Men’s National Team Duty Earthquakes defender Justin Morrow was on the bench for the United States in a pair of World Cup Qualifiers, including a 1-0 win against Costa Rica on Friday, March 22 in Denver, Colo. and a scoreless draw against Mexico at Estadio Azteca on Tuesday. He made his USMNT debut on Jan. 29 in a friendly against Canada. Bernardez Returns From Honduras National Team Duty Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez also returns to the team from national team duty after playing 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw against Mexico on Friday, March 22 in San Pedro Sula and a 2-0 loss against Panama in Panama City on Tuesday. Bernardez, 30, has 63 career caps with Los Catrachos. Snapping The Streak The Houston Dynamo enter this week’s match riding a 33-game home in all competitions, one off the MLS record set by Real Salt Lake. Including only regular season fixtures, the Dynamo are unbeaten in their last 27 games, two away from the league mark held by RSL. The Earthquakes are 1-3-0 all-time on the road against Houston, their lone win coming on Sept. 5, 2010, a 2-1 result at Robertson Stadium. Last year, the Earthquakes led all MLS teams with 30 points on the road thanks to a 9-5-3 record. Maiden Voyage The Earthquakes have yet to take the field at BBVA Compass Stadium. The facility opened on May 12, 2012 with the Dynamo earning a 1-0 result against D.C. United. Due to the league’s unbalanced schedule, the San Jose’s last visit to Houston was Sept. 17, 2011, a 2-1 loss at Robertson Stadium. Wondo One Start Away from Century Mark Chris Wondolowski is one start away from No. 100 with San Jose. He debuted with the club on Sept. 10, 2005, playing one minute in a 3-0 win against Chivas USA. He made his first start with the Earthquakes in a 2-1 loss against Seattle Sounders FC on June 13, 2009 at CenturyLink Field. Wondo Finds First in Run of Play Earthquakes leading goal scorer Chris Wondolowski bagged his second of the season in a 1-0 win against Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday. The reigning Volkswagen MLS MVP and Budweiser Golden Boot winner trapped and fired from just outside the 18-yard box in first half stoppage time to seal three points for San Jose. His first goal of 2013 came from the penalty spot in the 92nd minute of a 2-1 comeback win vs. New York on March 10. Wondolowski Searching for First Goal vs. Houston Chris Wondolowski has scored against every current MLS team – including the Earthquakes – except one: the Houston Dynamo. He has played four games, 90 minutes in each, against the Dynamo while placing four of his 12 shots on goal, but has yet to find the net. Wondolowski was originally drafted by San Jose in the fourth round (No. 41 overall) of the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft. He remained with the club during its move to Houston following the 2005 season, but returned to the Bay Area in a trade along with Houston’s natural second round pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft for forward Jed Weaver. Yallop, Kinnear Ready for Reunion Eighth-year Houston Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear began his career as an assistant for current Frank Yallop with the Earthquakes from 2001-03. After winning MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003, Yallop departed to take a job with the Canadian national team, leaving Kinnear as the new head coach in San Jose. Kinnear would go on to win a Supporters’ Shield with the Quakes in 2005 and Houston in 2008 as well as MLS Cups with Houston in 2006 and 2007. Yallop is 6-7-3 all-time against his former pupil, including matches with the LA Galaxy in 2006 and 2007. Four in a Row vs. Seattle Following Saturday’s 1-0 win, the Earthquakes have now won four in a row against Seattle Sounders FC. That stretch includes a trio of one-goal wins in 2012. San Jose’s last loss against the Pacific Northwest club came on Oct. 15, 2011, a 2-1 loss in front of 64,140 fans at CenturyLink Field in Kasey Keller’s home sendoff match.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Houston Dynamo, March 30, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. PT Quakes Sign Martinez The San Jose Earthquakes announced on March 15 that they signed Honduran forward/midfielder Walter “Pery” Martinez. The World Cup veteran has made 51 appearances with Honduras, while scoring 12 goals. He played in all three matches for Honduras at the 2010 World Cup. In his club career, he has played for CD Victoria (Honduras), CD Marathon (Honduras), Deportivo Alaves (Spain), Beijing Guoan (China) and Chongqing FC (China). Goonies Strike Again The Earthquakes set an MLS record with nine second-half stoppage-time goals in 2012, eight of which earned the team a win or a draw. The club was up to its same shenanigans in Week 2 as Adam Jahn scored an 83rd-minute equalizer and won a penalty that Chris Wondolowski slotted home in the 92nd minute. Corrales Moving Up on Career Assists List Ramiro Corrales recorded an assist for the second straight game against the Columbus Crew on Saturday night. He now has 32 career assists with the Earthquakes, placing him fourth all time in team history. The veteran defender/midfielder is 15 away from the club record held by Ronald Cerritos and trails Eddie Lewis by three for No. 3 overall. March to 200 Continues The Earthquakes are nine wins away from their 200th as an MLS club. San Jose secured their 100th win on July 19, 2003 against D.C. United when the Earthquakes won 2-1. Manny Lagos scored the game winner in the 54th minute. The Earthquakes are also four away from 100 draws. Defend the Shield Since the Earthquakes won the Supporters Shield in 2005, only three teams have successfully defended the shield in back-to-back seasons: the LA Galaxy 2010-11, Columbus Crew 2009-10 and D.C. United 2006-07. Wondo Inks Designated Player Contract Chris Wondolowski became the second Designated Player in club history when he signed a new contract with the Earthquakes on Tuesday, Feb. 26. He is the reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player after tying the league record for goals in a season with 27. Wondolowski also received MLS Best XI honors last season as well as the Budweiser Golden Boot. He is the club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 64 and set a league record for goals during a three-year stretch dating back to 2010 with 61 over that span. The only other DP in club history is Geovanni, a Brazilian attacker who was signed on Aug. 16, 2010. Fresh Faces in 2013 The Earthquakes added eight new players during the offseason. The 28-point difference from 2011 to 2012 rank fourth on the MLS all-time list, 11 behind the 1999 MetroStars. Meanwhile, the Earthquakes’ 11 additional wins in 2012 rank No. 1 all-time, one-upping the 1999 MetroStars and 2009 New York Red Bulls. Club Records from 2012 The Earthquakes’ 19 wins in 2012 tied a club record set in 1999 while their 66 points established a new San Jose best. The Earthquakes won 10 of their games in 1999 via shootout, a tie-breaking procedure that is no longer a part of MLS rules. The club’s previous record for points in a season was 64 when they took home the Supporters’ Shield trophy in 2005. Wondo in 20-Goal Club Chris Wondolowski’s 27 goals in 2012 made him the 10th player in league history to tally 20 or more times in a single season. The last player to score 20 or more in a season was Landon Donovan with the LA Galaxy in 2008. Goonie Stats from 2012 The Earthquakes made headlines in 2012 for their late-game heroics. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27.
