BY AMBER KUEHNof Montana Lee Newspapers
The games are often close and almost alwaysunpredictable. So what better way to wrap upthe regular season than with Carroll College
facing Montana Tech and Western, its biggest rivalson the hardwood?
“When Carroll, Tech and Western play you canthrow the records out the window,” Saints coachBrandon Veltri said. “Regardless of where teamsstand, it’s going to be a great basketball game. Therivalry with Tech is a great rivalry that goes back a lotof years. The intensity is right where you want it thistime of season.”
The Carroll women tip off tonight’s game againstthe Orediggers at 5:30 p.m. in the Carroll P.E. Center, followed by the men’s game at 7:30. The Saintssquads then host Western on Saturday for the regu-lar-season finale and Senior Night. Tech goes on toBillings to face Rocky Mountain College on Saturday.
As expected, a tight Frontier Conference race onthe men’s side has come down to the final weekend.Though the Carroll men are still fighting for a post-season home game and seeding in the conferencetournament, Veltri said the message to his team thisweek was to ignore scenarios and focus on the Saints’task at hand.
“Instead of worrying about who needs to win andwho’s gonna finish where, we need to focus on whatwe need to do,” he said, “and that’s play as well as wecan against Tech on Thursday. That’s the only thingwe can control.”
Carroll (13-11 overall, 6-6 Frontier) edged Tech(11-12, 3-9) in the first meeting of the year in Butte, despite being outrebounded by the Ore’Diggers 41-33. The battle on the boards has been a point ofemphasis this season for the Saints, who have shotlights out but been hurt by opponents’ offensive

rebounds and second-chance opportunities. Veltrisaid that’s something the team hopes to shore up thisweek and, if the Saints continue to shoot as well asthey have been — they shot 55 percent from the fieldat Northern, and a stellar 63 percent in their mostrecent home game — he likes their chances.
“We’re running our offense as well as we everhave,” Veltri said. “The kids are playing with a ton ofconfidence and know where they need to put the ballto get their opportunities.”
The last-place ’Diggers will likely have somethingto say about that, though. The ’Diggers are a strongdefensive team that likes to switch from man-to-man to zone, half-court to full-court, keeping teamson their toes. They’ll also try to limit Carroll to onelook per possession, with relentless rebounders ColeConway and Daniel Simon manning the post. “Wehave to do a better job of locating those two,” Veltrisaid of the duo, which has combined for 253 boardsthis year and pulled down 23 total against the Saints.
The ’Diggers, winners of just one of their last 10,are aiming to snap a three-game losing skid. Despitetheir struggles this season, the Saints know betterthan to take a feisty Tech squad for granted.
“It just seems like Tech last year and this year hasbeen bottom of the conference and still given us agame every time,” Saints senior Tony Dalton said.
“I’ve never had an easy game against them.”Montana Tech coach Aaron Woliczko agrees that
there’s something special about when the ’Diggersplay Carroll. “The last two years games with Carroll, whether they were regular season or playoffs, havebeen very, very tight,” said Woliczko, in his secondyear at the helm. “It’s been by one posession or comedown to the last minute of the game. We’re trying tohave another competitive game wtih them this week, and hopefully have an opportunity to come out onthe other end of the score.”
The ’Diggers are led by senior point guard TyreeHaynie and freshman sharpshooter Adam Greger, who averages 12.4 ppg on 48 percent shooting.
“Greger played really well against us down there,”Dalton said. “He made some really tough shots; he’sgood at finding open shots against the zone.”
The last time they played, the Saints did most oftheir damage from behind the arc, hitting 50 percentof their shots from 3-point range. Woliczko said histeam will have to be better at defending the perime-ter and contesting the long jumpers, but noted that ateam like Carroll can be difficult to prepare for withsuch a good inside-outside-inside attack..
Carroll is coming off a loss to the Lights that sentthem into a tie for fourth place when a win could haveput them as high as second. They’re hoping torebound from the setback by doing exactly that —rebounding. “Most of the time we were there and justdidn’t finish the possession,” Dalton said of his team’srebounding woes. “If you just get a couple more ofthose rebounds, it’s a whole different ball game.”

Saints look for repeat win over Tech womenBY AMBER KUEHN
of Montana Lee Newspapers
Winning the 50-50 balls has not beena problem for the Saints women, one ofthe top rebounding teams in the confer-ence. But if Carroll (10-15, 3-9) is goingto put an end to its five-game losingstreak and get back on track, it’s going totake more offensive contributions to getit done.
“Obviously the thing we’ve struggledwith all year is finding offense,” saidSaints first-year women’s coachRachelle Sayers. “We rebound well anddefend well ... now we need to take theconfidence and poise we have on thedefensive end and match that on theoffensive end. “We have to have all fiveplayers on the floor want to be scorers. Ifwe do that we’ll be fine.”
The Saints got a much-needed confi-dence boost in their 55-48 loss toNorthern, when they shot a season-best16 of 17 from the free-throw line. Butthey still shot just 31 percent from thefield, and the typically fundamentallysound Saints found themselves makingtoo many mistakes down the stretch.
“Once we lost Alysha Green we knewwe’d lost a lot from the offensive end,”junior Torrie Cahill said, referring to thesenior guard’s season-ending kneeinjury. “We decided to just play ourhearts out on defense. Coach has neverquestioned our work ethic, and I thinkthat’s something to be really proud of. Ifwe can execute well on offense, we’ll befine against Tech.”
Carroll won the first meeting 47-41on Jan. 28, the Saints’ last victory. TheSaints rallied from a 20-15 halftimedeficit in that one by outscoring the’Diggers 32-21 over the final 20 minutes
behind a biggame by freshman Bailey Snelling, whofinished with 15 points. Cahill saidCarroll needs to start strong and put thegame away early tonight.
“Energy has been our main thing allyear,” said the Miles City native, wholeads the team with 9.2 points per game.“When we do have it that’s when weplay our best by far. But we had playedWestern the night before and it was adogfight, so I think we were tired. Butwe dug deep and did what it took towin.”
Sayers said she felt her team wasthinking too much about what Tech wasgoing to do defensively in that firstgame.
“They trap a lot and mix up defensesand we might have been overpreparedfor that,” she said. “We were too busytrying to figure out what they weregonna do instead of playing aggressiveand just attacking.”
The message this time is to keep itsimple and stick to the game plan: driv-ing to the hoop, drawing the foul andsinking the free throws. Nobody hasbeen better at that than Cahill, who hascanned 81 percent of her foul shots inleague play and has gotten to the line 101times this season. She was 4 for 4 in thefirst meeting with Tech and also has a 9-for-9 performance to her credit.
“I worked real hard in the offseason
to improve my shot, but once Ihurt my shoulder, my shot justhasn’t been the same,” saidCahill, who has a torn labrum.“I know to help our team I needto get to the hole and go upstrong against big posts. Otherteams aren’t as disciplined asus, so I go in with the intentionof a three-point play everytime.”
Mandy Machinal leads Tech(9-15, 4-8) with 13.8 ppg. Shescored 11 last time againstCarroll, the only Digger in double digits.
