Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. because of a prior event at the stadium. The Mustangs are 6-0 overall, 5-0 in LSC play after a 68-20 romp over Angelo State last Saturday. The Mustangs are the only unbeaten team in the conference and are 6-0 for the rst time since 1949. The Wildcats are 5-1 overall record, 4-0 in LSC action after their 28-18 win over 17th ranked West Texas A&M in Abilene. The contest pits the second-best rushing offense in the nation in the Mustangs (317.5 ypg) against the fourth- best rushing defense nationally in the Cats (74. 3 ypg). MSU has four of the top seven rushers in the LSC with three in the nation’s top 100, led by reserve Jimmy Pipkin whose back-to-back 140-yard games has him second in the LSC and 41 in the country averaging 88.2 yards a contest. About the series This is the 26th meeting between the Midwestern and Abilene Christian, the longest series featuring only senior college games in MSU history, with MSU sporting a 5-19-1 record. ACU has won four of the last ve meetings, but the series is even at 4-4 since 2004. The Wildcats won 31-28 last season in Abilene. Since resuming football in 1988, MSU is 3-4 against ACU in Wichita Falls. Looking for 7-0 The Mustangs are after history against Abilene Christian as they can start a season 7-0 for the rst time in school history. If they can do that, this squad will pass the the schools’ best start that was achieved in the 1949 season. MSU started 6-0 on the way to a 10-1 record and an “unofcial” Small College National Championship. The six-game winning streak that the Mustangs are on is the second-longest in MSU history and its longest win- ning streak since an eight-game streak in 1991. More on Streaking The Mustangs are carrying the six-game winning streak into the contest with Abilene Christian. It’s the 14th time in school history that MSU has posted at least a four-game winning streak in a season, with 10 of those coming since 2004. While the longest single-season winning streak is eight games in 1991, MSU strung together nine wins from the end of the 2005 season through the start of the 2006 season. In 2006, the Mustangs actually put up two ve-game winning streaks, the rst ending with a 29-27 loss at West Texas A&M and the second with the 27-0 loss at North- west Missouri State in the NCAA super region seminals. Midwestern had only three other four-game plus winning streaks in previous football eras, a six-game and four-game streak in 1949 and a ve-game winning streak in 1946. Mustangs climb to 12 in the rankings Midwestern State moved up to 12th this week in the American Football Coaches Association NCAA Division II Top 25 thanks to last Saturday’s 68-20 win at Angelo State. It’s the highest ranking since climbing to eighth on Oct. 4, 2010, or the last time MSU faced ACU. It’s the fourth consecutive reporting period MSU has been ranked since returning to the elite list. The Mustangs had spent 22 consecutive reporting periods in the Top 25 before falling out in the fi nal poll of 2010. But the Mustangs received votes in that poll and the fi rst four of this season to make an appearance on at least one ballot in 65 of the last 66 reporting periods dating back to the 2006 season. MSU cracked the top 10 for the fi rst time in pro-gram history going into the fi nal week of the 2009 season at No. 9 before moving up two spots to No. 7 in the fi nal regular season poll. The No. 12 Mustangs are one of seven Super Region 4 teams ranked in the Top 25 as part of the 11 to receive mention in the this week’s poll joining No. 3 Washburn (Kan.), No. 4 Pittsburg State, No. 6 Northwest Missouri, No. 9 Abilene Christian, No. 15 Humboldt State (Calif.), and No. 24 West Texas A&M, while Central Missouri, Southwest Baptist (Mo.), East Central, and Missouri Western are all receiving votes.

Among gridiron elite, MSU now at 12 Midwestern State is among a select group of four Texas four-year football playing insitutions sporting at least 11 straight winning seasons and now it is a dozen. The Mustangs are the only D2 program in the State of Texas with at least 11 consecutive winning seasons. MSU trails only NCAA D3 power Hardin-Sim-mons with 20-straight winning seasons and Big 12 stalwart Texas Tech at 18.

Midwestern State’s 48-point win over Angelo State last Saturday at San Angelo Stadium represent-ed the Mustangs largest margin of victory since since a 52-3 demolition of Northeastern State on Sept. 12, 2009 at Memorial Stadium. It was the third time this season MSU posted a win of 40 or more points, matching a mark set in 2009. The 68 points were the most since MSU’s 73-6 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Oct. 20, 2007.

40-point wins since ’88 | MSU has 19 of them

Mustangs are Masterful at Memorial Since Bill Maskill took over the reins of the MSU football program in 2002, the Mustangs have compiled a 42-9 record at Memorial Stadium - good for an impressive .824 winning percentage. MSU has a 76-46 overall record in now its 24th season playing home contests at Memorial Stadium. The Mustangs are 50-11 (.820) at home since 2000. MSU was 5-0 on its home turf in 2010 and has won its last 14 regular season games at Memorial Stadium dating back to the 2008 season.

Facing the rankings The Mustangs snapped a four game losing streak to teams ranked in the American Football Coaches’ As-sociation Poll with the win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. Still, MSU hasn’t experienced much success against ranked teams. The Mustangs are 8-27 overall against ranked opposition on the fi eld. However, that mark would be 8-25 when taking out NCAA mandated vacations of losses to Texas A&M-Kings-ville and Abilene Christian.

Silatolu leads Mustangs up front Senior left tackle Amini Silatolu anchors one of the best offensive lines in Midwestern State history. The unanimous preseason fi rst-team All American swept the four major publications - D2Football.com, The Sporting News, Lindy’s Magazine and Collegiate Draft Services - after enjoying a breakout campaign in 2010. The Tracy, Calif. native earned fi rst-team AFCA Division II and D2Football.com All-America honors and was a second-team selection on the AP Little All-America and Daktronics teams and was the 2010 LSC Offensive Lineman of the Year. Currently, NFL scouts believe he could be drafted within the fi rst three rounds. He is believed by some to be the best interior line prospect in all of college football. The 2010 LSC Offensive Lineman of the Year was selected by his peers to serve as a team captain alongside defensive back Tyler Maner and defensive end Kevin Birdow.

Little is moving up the charts Senior wide receiver David Little has reached second on the Midwestern State career receiving lists and is working on the top. He is second in receptions (142), receiving yards (1962) and tied for second in receiving touchdowns (19). Little needs 14 catches to break the school re-cord of 155 held by Bryan Gilmore (1996-99) and 761 yards to grab Gilly’s receiving yardage record. He needs one more touchdown pass to tie and two more grabs to pass Andy Tanner (2006-09) who has 20. Little leads the team this season with 31 recep-tions for 486 yards and six touchdowns. He’s fourth in the LSC and 38th nationally in receiving yardage, while standing sixth in the league and 66th in recep-tions per game (5.2).

The New Pony Express Rides Again The Mustangs offense, the “New Pony Express,” is off and running, and running, and running. MSU not only leads the LSC but ranks second na-tionally in rushing offense, collecting 317.5 yards a game. MSU is more than doubling its closest LSC competitor, Texas A&M-Kingsville with 151.7 yards an outing. The New Pony Express ran for 393 yards against Angelo State last Saturday, the eighth best rushing game in MSU history and the fi fth 290-plus rushing game this season. Jimmy Pipkin came off the bench again to lead the Mustangs with 141 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. MSU picked up 369 yards against A&M-Com-merce in game two, rushing for more yards than the two games behind them in the Lone Star Football Festival combined (350). All fi ve teams besides MSU rushed for a combined 437 yards. MSU has three running backs and its quarterback ranked among the Top 10 rushers in the LSC with three of the four in the top 100 nationally. Pipkin now ranks second in the league (88.2 ypg/41th nationally), Brandon Kelsey is fourth (78.7/65th), Keidrick Jackson sixth (65.2/98th), and Lester Bush seventh (61.2). So far this year, the Mustangs have rushed for 1,905 yards, 57.8 percent of their total yardage of 3,297.

Jukin’ Jackson The Mustangs leading rusher for the season before last week, sophomore Keidrick Jackson saw only four carries against Angelo State for 17 yards to bring his season totals to 391 yards on 63 rushes this season, averaging 6.2 yards a carry. He also led the team in receiving with four catches for 60 yards and a TD. The 5-9, 207 pound Arlington/Bowie is sixth in the LSC and is 98th nationally with 65.2 yards per game rushing, and leads the league and is 10th nationally in scoring with 11.0 points a game. Playing in just 17 games so far in his career, Jack-son has 820 yards on 129 carries (6.4 ypc) with 17 touchdowns. He’s already tied for sixth on the ca-reer rushing TD list and needs 180 yards to become the 15th player on the MSU 1,000 career yards list. He has 108 total points and needs 10 points to join the career scoring list as well.

He currently has 367 yards on 73 rushes and seven touchdowns this season thanks to his 21 yards on seven attempts against Angelo. He chalked up his second career 100-yard game by rushing for 103 yards on 15 carries against Incarnate Word. The 5-9, 220 pounder from Houston/Galeena Park, nicknamed “Bull” by the coaching staff, has 1,205 career yards and is 13th on the MSU all-time rushing list. He needs 175 yards to join the MSU career top 10. Bush has 18 career rushing touchdowns, tied for fourth on the all-time list.

BK is the King Junior Brandon Kelsey has started all six games at quarterback this season, but has only fi nished one. But that’s okay with him, as he’s seen action past the mid-point of the third quarter only against Texas A&M-Kingsville this year. He piled up 371 total yards in just the fi rst half against Angelo State, while missing one series, and didn’t return during the second half. He set a new school record for single-game pass effi ciency with a 281.9 rating after hitting 12-of-16 for 237 yards and four touchdowns (22, 15, 35, 63). He owned the old record with a 268.1 rating against Incarnate Word this year. He also rushed for 134 yards on six carries including a 77-yard TD run. It was the seventh 200/100 game in MSU history, joining his 210 passing/113 rushing game at Incarnate Word. Kelsey leads the Lone Star Conference with his 186.3 effi ciency rating. He’s completed 80-of-112 passes with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions, while averaging 193.2 yards a game. BK has rushed for 472 yards on 46 carries with fi ve touchdowns (5, 22, 24, 33, 77) with the two 100-yard games. He is fourth in the LSC in rushing at 78.7 yards a game.

Career Rushing Yardage

Pipkin leads from behind Redshirt freshman Jimmy Pipkin really is the third running back in the MSU rotation, despite ranking second in the LSC and 41st nationally in rushing with 88.2 yards a contest. He has 441 yards on 33 carries. Pipkin did come in on the second MSU possession against Angelo State and promptly ran for 37 yards. His second carry was a 14-yard touchdown. His third was a 71-yard streak for a score as well. He fi nished the game with fi ve carries for 141 yards. It was Pipkin’s third 100-yard game this season and came on the heels of his LSC Offensive Player of the Week performance against Tarleton State where car-ried the ball 14 times for 155 yards. He also raced for 106 yards against Texas A&M-Commerce. The 6-0, 190 pound Dallas/Bryan Adams product has delivered two of the fi ve longest rushes in school history with his 87-yard burst against A&M-C (fourth longest) an 83-yard run versus Tarleton (fi fth longest). Of Pipkin’s 33 carries, 13 have been for 10 yards or more with three of those better than 70 yards.

100 by Four The Mustangs are the only team in Super Region 4 to have four different players record 100-yard rushing games this season. Jimmy Pipkin has three 100-plus games (106 vs A&M-Commerce, 155 vs Tarleton State, 141 vs Angelo State), Brandon Kelsey has two (113 vs. Incarnate Word, 134 vs Angelo State), while Keidrick Jackson (160 vs Texas A&M-Kingsville), and Lester Bush (103 vs. Incarnate Word) each have one. Pipkin became the fi rst MSU player to post back-to-back 100-yard games since QB Daniel Polk turned the trick with 101 vs Tarleton and 113 vs A&M-Kings-ville Oct. 13 & 20, 2007. He’s the fi rst running back to accomplish the feat so since Ulysses Odoms had 203 yards vs. Eastern New Mexico and 155 vs. Abilene Christian Nov. 4 & 11, 2006.

With his pickoff against Angelo State, Conway now has six career interceptions to join a fi ve-way tie for seventh all-time at MSU in just 15 games. The 5-10, 170 pounder from Houston/Lamar leads the team with three picks this season after he led MSU in picks last season with three for 150 yards in returns, all coming in the last fi ve games of the year. Conway’s interception led him to earning MSU’s Most Outstanding Player award in the Kanza Bowl.

Saladino’s Scores Sophomore Greg Saladino had a record-tying performance against Angelo State. With his two fi eld goals and eight PATs, Saladino tied the MSU record of 14 scoring points set by Kristian Foster against Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 4, 2004. He was 8-of-9 on the points after when his fi nal attempt was blocked after a bad snap. The 5-10 kicker from Kingwood is second in the Lone Star Conference overall, leads LSC kickers and is 30th nationally averaging 8.5 points a contest (51 points).

Saladino is 39-of-42 on PATs this season, and hit 23 straight before the block. He’s now 4-of-4 on fi eld goal attempts this season with a long of 43-yards against both Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State. Last season, he connected on a 22-yard fi eld goal at Eastern New Mexico and was 2-for-2 on PATs against Southwestern Oklahoma.

Roamin’ with Romie Senior cornerback Romie Blaylock is providing a big spark for the Mustangs secondary. The 5-10, 180 pound defender from Cedar Hill, the transfer from Baylor leads the team with fi ve pass breakups. He’s third on the team with 27 tack-les (4.5 per game) and has 1.0 tackles for losses for -2 yards.

Do not pass Go ... If you want to move the chains against the Mus-tangs defense, do it on fi rst or second down. That’s because MSU is stingy on third or fourth down. MSU is allows opponents to convert on third down just 34 percent of the time (33-of-98), while cutting that down to 29 percent on fourth (4-of-14).

Duncan Tackles the Chart Senior linebacker Ty Duncan leads the MSU tackle chart after six weeks. Earning Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week after the Missouri S&T game, the 6-2, 210 pound senior from Rockwall is averaging 8.0 tackles a game with 48 total tackles for the year, and ranks third in the LSC. He also has 5.0 tackles for losses (-28) and 1.5 sacks (-20). Against Angelo State he chalked up 11 tackles, six solo, marking just the second time this season an MSU player has recorded a double-digit tackle game.

Bashin’ Birdow Senior defensive end Kevin Birdow is a force for the Mustangs. The 6-2, 250 pounder from Palestine, Texas, has 25 tackles for the year (4.2 per game) and leads the squad with 8.0 tackles for losses of 35 yards. He also has 2.0 quarterback sacks (.33 per game). Birdow is currently sixth in the LSC and 70th nationally in tackles for losses (1.33 per game). For his career, Birdow has 120 tackles (3.2 per game) and 21.5 tackles for losses.

Picky, Picky The Mustangs snared their fi fth interception of the season against Angelo State. While the Mustangs have only fi ve yards in returns for the picks, they have gotten MSU in gear.

Neiko Conway recorded his third interception of the season against ASU to go with his oskies against Missouri S&T and Texas A&M-Kingsville. Add in Nick Bourgeois’ take-away against A&M-Commerce and you have three drives started that ended in a Mustangs touchdown. Jeremy Smith added a fourth intercep-tion (with a four-yard return) in the fourth quarter against Tarleton.

Spread it around Midwestern has had a chance for a lot of players to see action in the fi rst six weeks, and the tackle chart shows how strong the unit is as a team. Eight players have 20 or more tackles so far, and a total of 15 players have 15 or more stops.

Gardner gains notoriety Junior whip Pat Gardner is one of the pillars of the MSU defense, currently fi fth on the tackle chart with 24 stops (4.0 per game). He was the LSC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his contest against Incarnate Word. He recorded six tackles with a tackle for loss and a pass break up in just under three full quarters of action. When he left the game in the third quarter with the Mustangs up 35-0, MSU had allowed only 107 yards of offense to UIW.

All “O” and no “D”?Not So Fast my Friend ... While the Mustangs have hung their hats on their offensive performance so far this year, the MSU Defense has shone brightly as well. The Mustangs lead the Lone Star Conference in total defense (313.0 ypg), scoring defense (17.0 ppg), passing defense (211.3 ypg) and pass effi ciency defense (103.34 rating). MSU is fourth in rush defense (101.7 ypg). In NCAA Division II, MSU is 13th in scoring defense, 17th in pass effi ciency defense, 21st in rush defense and 34th in total defense.

First Half D-Time The Mustangs defense has gotten off on the right foot during the fi rst half this season. Through six games, MSU is allowing an average of just 123.5 yards in the opening 30 minutes of play, 43.7 on the ground and 79.8 in the air. The Mustangs have given up 39 fi rst half points, an average of 6.5 points per fi rst half. The Mustangs average 29.0 points in fi rst half play.

First Half Defense

Gunter the Punter Sophomore Gunter Elenburg is quite a weapon for the Mustangs who has fl ipped the fi eld with his strong leg. The 6-0 Jacksboro High product is third in the Lone Star Conference and 36th nationally with his average of 40.0 yards on his 23 punts. He has four punts of more than 50 yards, with his longest a 57-yard boot against Texas A&M-Kingsville. He’s also hit two 51-yarders, one against A&M-Kings-ville and one against Tarleton State, and a 50-yarder at Angelo State. Elenburg has killed seven punts inside the 20 and has three touchbacks. In 2010, he recovered from a shaky start to aver-age 41.0 yards on 33 punts over the last nine weeks including a long of 71 yards, six fair catches, seven inside the 20-yard line and seven 50-plus yard punts.

About the late kickoff The Mustangs and Wildcats are kicking off an hour later than usual because of the Region 2 West Zone UIL Marching Festival. The event is hosted annually by the Wichita Falls Independent School District at the district-owned Memorial Stadium. It’s the last scheduled game of the season for the Mustangs, with the last three regular season games set to be played during the daylight hours.
