The Game: This is the Chicago Classic featuring a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup between the Bears of Morgan State Univer-sity and the Bison of Howard University. The Bears (0-2, 0-0 in the MEAC) are com-ing off of a 61-0 win over Virginia-Lynch-burg at home this past Saturday that is cat-egorized as a non-countable contest. Bison (0-3, 0-1 in the MEAC) are looking for thier first win of the season after a 37-19 loss to Hampton University in last Friday’s AT&T Nation’s Football Classic at RFK Stadium.

Series Record:This is the 76th meeting between the two schools that dates back to 1899. The Bears won last year’s thiller, 38-35 on a last sec-ond field goal in the N.Y. Urban League Classic at the Meadowlands. It snapped a two-game win streak for Howard. The Bears have won eight of the last 10 to hold a slight, 39-33-3 lead in the series.

The Coaches: Morgan State is coached by Lee Hull (Col-lege of Holy Cross, ‘88), who is in his sec-ond season there and has a 7-8 record to date as a head coach. Howard is coached by Gary “Flea” Harrell (Howard, ‘94), who is in his fourth season and has a 17-20 record to date as a head coach.

Coach’s Show: Coach Harrell is heard every Sunday at 12 noon during the Coach’s Show on In and Out of Sports, WOL1450am or www.1450am.com.

Media Coverage:The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and tape delayed on ESPNU. Shawn Kenney will handle the play by play and for-mer Howard standout QB Jay “Sky” Walker will provide color commentary. The game will be webcast on the HU Bison Sports Network, HU Bison Network www.whbc93hd3.com. Trevin Jones will provide the play by play and Michael Lindo will add color. It will also be broadcast on Heritage Sports Radio Network (www. hsrn.com). Veteran Lamont Germany will do the play by play and Lex Taylor will provide the color.

Next Up: The Bears travel to Dover, Del. to take on the Hornets of Delaware State at 2 p.m. next Saturday while the Bison entertain the Spar-tans of Norfolk State for homecoming next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Greene Stadium.

Consistency: Punter/placekicker John Fleck is proving to be one of the most consistent performers through three games. His contribution has allowed marked improvement in the special teams. He has punted well and his booming kickoffs have resulted in teammates being able to get down the field the coverage. The senior from Indianapolis has four of his punts that have gone 50 yards or more, including an 83-yard effort against Appalachian State that set a new school record and ranks among the tops in MEAC history.

Kinship: There are some strong connections between the two programs. Defensive line coach and Wide Receiver coach B.T. Sherman both coached at Morgan State before coming to Howard a year ago. HU head coach Gary “Flea” Harrell served as quarterback coach with the Bears for a year. Morgan State defensive coordinator LeAndre Creamer and Herbert Parham served as defensive coordi-nator with the Bison before going to Morgan State. Howard kicking coach Mike Andrews was a standout kicker at Morgan State.

Improved Secondary:The much-maligned secondary could be the most improved unit on the team. While cornerback Kenneth Russ has established himself as one of the premier players at his position, the remaining trio had their prob-lems due to inexperience and learning the system last year. Fast forward one year and Travon Hunt, Craig Johnson and Jacob Ben-nett have combined to show much promise. Hunt, the other corner opposite Russ, picked off two interceptions in the loss to Hampton. Bennett, the strong safety, leads all tacklers on the team. Johnson has been steady at the free safety slot and has been credited with 16 tackles. Bennett and Johnson were both walk-ons.

The Injuiry Epidemic:Howard has lost five defensive linemen through either injuries or administrative challenges. DTs Joseph Dillard and Trae Haugabook, DE Damon Gresham-Chisolm, DT Mukuka Kusaba and DE Godspower Offor are all out. Devin Rollins, the senior starting middle linebacker, team captain and MEAC leading tackler last season, is out for the season.

Hitting The Stride:Aquanius Freeman has had some outstand-ing games at Howard when he has been healthy, but injuries have plagued the red-shirt senior from New Orleans, La. Freeman is off to the best start of his career. He leads the team in rushing with 157 yards and a TD and he is also the team’s leading receiver with 11 receptions.

Bison In The Pros: Antoine Bethea, strong safety for San Fran-ciso 49ers; Pep Hamilton, offensive coor-dinator, Indianapolis Colts; Roy Anderson, safety coach, Indianapolis Colts; Jimmie Johnson, tight ends coach, N.Y. Jets all have NFL affiliation.

Scouting The Bears:Morgan State is led by quarterback Moses Skillon (65 yards rushing, 1 TD, 20 of 40, 218 yards passing), running back Lamont Brown (17 rushes for 68 yards) and wide receivers Brian Gentry (6 receptions, 84 yards, 1 TD) and Ricky Fisk (6 catches for 60 yards) on offense. The defense is led by Joel Scott (7 tackles, 2 for losses) and Dam-are Whitaker (12 tackles).

Gary Harrell

Head Coach

Howard, ’94 / Fourth Season

Gary "Flea" Harrell enters his fourth season as head football coach at Howard University and is committed to building the Bison program into a contender. It did not take Harrell long to put his stamp on the Howard University football program. Using the slogan, “The Road to Redemption” in his first season in 2011, Harrell was able to turn the Bison’s fortunes around by leading them to a 5-6 mark. It was significant because the win total exceeded the total number of victories the three previous season combined.

Harrell was among the finalists for the Eddie Robinson Award, presented to the top coach in FCS and the MEAC Coach of the Year. With his philosophy in place, Harrell would lead Howard to a 7-4 record and a 6-2 mark in the MEAC. It was the first winning season for the Bison in a decade and the second place finish in the conference was the best in over a decade. Following a year leave of absence, Harrell returned the sidelines in 2014 and led the Bison to a 5-7 mark, but it is important to note that Howard finished the season on a four-game winning streak. The Miami, Fla. native is no stranger to coaching at Greene Stadium, making his career debut as the Bison wide receivers coach in 2002. After two seasons with Howard, Harrell had coaching stints at Texas Southern (2004-2006) and Florida A&M (2006-2008) as the wide receivers coach. He continued his matriculation towards a head coaching job by serving as the quarterbacks coach at Morgan State University (2008-2009) and the wide receivers coach for Team Michigan, a member of the All-American Football League (2008). Prior to being named the head coach at his alma mater, Harrell completed two seasons as the offensive coordinator for Bowie State University’s football team. Affectionately known as “The Flea,” Harrell was a fan favorite for his calculating and precise on-the-field exploits despite his stature. He is the all-time leading receiver in school history and ranks among the tops in MEAC history. He also holds the season record for punt returns (29) and return yards in a season (417). Harrell was a four-year letter winner at Howard University. “Howard has a strong legacy of achievement,” Harrell said. “Every member of Howard University football accepts the responsibility of representing the program with dignity and pride on and off the field. We started out as the Road To Redemption in an attempt

Page 7: GAME #4 - Amazon S3€¦ · Nov. 7 Stony Brook 1 p.m. Nov. 14 NCCU*+ 1 p.m. Nov. 21 Delaware State* 2 p.m. * Mid-Eastern Athletic Games ^ AT&T Nation’s Classic Game # Chicago Football

to bring the program back to respectability. We are now entering the next phase, ‘The Road to Glory.’ It is our goal to have a program that is competitive year in and year out.” As a starter for Howard’s undefeated 1993 team, Harrell and his teammates won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship and were crowned the Black National College champions. He set the benchmark for wide receivers at Howard and holds the school record for most receptions in a game (13) and in a career (184). Harrell made his professional debut in the National Football League with the New York Giants (1994-96), followed by a season for the World League’s Frankfurt Galaxy (1996) and two seasons in the Canadian Football league with the Montreal Alouettes (1996-97). Harrell is a 1994 graduate of Howard University with a degree in marketing. He was inducted into the Howard University Hall of Fame in November 2005 and received a proclamation from the City of Miami declaring it Gary “Flea” Harrell Day. Harrell attended the Miami Northwestern High School.
