Jeff Bower was hired as the 10th head men’s basketball coach in Marist College history on April 10, 2013.

Bower brings three decades of experience at the collegiate and NBA levels. After serving as an assistant coach at Penn State from 1983-86, he spent the next nine seasons at Marist. Bower was the top assistant from 1986-90, and associate head coach from 1990-95. He then worked for the NBA’s Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets for the next 15 years, during which he served as general manager, head coach, director of player personnel, as-sistant general manager, assistant coach, director of scouting and advance scout. Most recently, Bower served as a consultant to the NBA league office and various NBA teams.

In Bower’s previous tenure at Marist, the Red Foxes won the ECAC Metro Conference regular-season championship in 1987 and 1988, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1987. He aided in the development of Rik Smits, who was the second overall pick in the 1988 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. The Red Foxes were also ranked second in the country in field goal percentage defense (.401) in the 1989-90 season.

In 1995, Bower joined the Hornets’ organization as an advance scout, a position he held for two seasons. He was then promoted to director of scouting, a position he held from 1997-2000. In 1999, Bower served as an assistant coach for 35 games when Paul Silas was promoted to head coach, during which the Hornets posted a 22-13 record.

Bower became assistant general manager for the 2000-01 sea-son, and served the first of his two stints as general manager from 2001-03. After one season apiece as assistant coach (2003-04) and director of player personnel (2004-05), he took over as gen-eral manager in 2005. He held this position until 2010, and also was head coach for the final 73 games of the 2009-10 season. Despite several injuries to key players, the Hornets compiled a 34-39 record under his leadership. In 2007-08, a team con-structed by Bower enjoyed its finest season in franchise history. New Orleans won its only division title, set a franchise record with 56 regular-season wins, and advanced to the Western Confer-ence semifinals, where they took the San Antonio Spurs to seven games. That year, Bower finished third in the Sporting News NBA Executive of the Year voting.

During Bower’s tenure with the Hornets, the organization drafted four future NBA All-Stars: Baron Davis (1999, third pick), Jamaal Magloire (2000, 19th pick), David West (2003, 18th pick) and Chris Paul (2005, fourth pick).

Bower is a native of Hollidaysburg, Pa. He and his wife, Lisa, are the parents of a 10-year-old daughter, Lindsey. He received a bachelor of the arts in history/education from St. Francis (Pa.). As an undergraduate, he was an assistant with the Red Flash.

Head Coach Jeff Bower

First Season

St. Francis (Pa.)/1983

What They’re Saying About Jeff Bower“I loved him as an assistant coach. We worked closely together on post moves. We worked out a lot of early mornings. As a kid, I was not a morning person, but he convinced me to get up early, and it sure paid off. He’s a very insightful guy, very smart, and he loves the game and studies it. He’s an all-around good guy and good coach. I’m glad to see he’s back at Marist and I think he will really help Marist.”Rik Smits - Center, Marist College & Indiana PacersSecond Overall Pick, 1988 NBA Draft - NBA All-Star, 1998 “Jeff is a brilliant basketball coach who has held every conceiv-able job in the NBA, which makes him an astute hire for Marist College. His background is unique, but I don’t think he has ever forgotten his roots at Marist. I think he’s going to combine the knowledge he gathered in the NBA with his passion for Marist College, and make them a perennial contender in the MAAC.”Jeff Van Gundy - NBA Television AnalystFormer Head Coach, New York Knicks & Houston Rockets “What a great hire! Jeff is a great basketball guy. He was as knowledgeable at what he did as anyone in the NBA, and a tremendous talent evaluator. He’s a great coach who I think play-ers will love playing for. The kids who decide to play at Marist will have a tremendous advantage because Jeff knows what it takes to be a great player. He’s been around the best of the best.”Stan Van Gundy - Former NBA Head Coach, Miami Heat & Orlando Magic “I think Jeff is a fantastic coach, and he‘s a great hire. He brings a lot of real-world experience at the highest level, and I think he’s going to bring us back to where we should be. He deinitely helped me both personally and professionally. He has a great way about teaching the fundamentals. He‘s very patient, and he worked with me as I developed. He put in a lot of hours with me, and it showed.”Alan Tomidy - Center, Marist CollegeSingle-Season Record Holder, Rebounds (11.3/game, ‘95-’96) “I’m thrilled for Jeff and Marist College. I know how strongly he feels about the school and community. They are getting a great coach, leader and person. Jeff is not only a great teacher, he also has the unique ability to communicate and motivate each individual player to help them reach and achieve their maximum potential.”Tom Thibodeau - Head Coach, Chicago Bulls2011 NBA Coach of the Year

PRINSLOO’S PRODUCTION: Senior center/forward Pieter Prinsloo set ca-reer highs in points (eight, vs. Loyola Marymount) and rebounds (10, vs. Morgan State) in back-to-back games in the Paradise Jam.

IN-SEASON TOURNAMENTS: Marist participated in the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands from Nov. 22-25, making the first time the Red Foxes partici-pated in the tournament. It marked the fourth straight year, and seventh time in the last eight seasons, that Marist has appeared in an in-season tourna-ment. In those eight years, Marist has appeared in a total of nine in-season tournaments.

COIL, LEE SIGN NATIONAL LET-TERS OF INTENT: On Nov. 21, head coach Jeff Bower announced the singing of R.J. Coil and K.J. Lee to National Letters of Intent. Coil is a 6-9 center/forward from Toledo, Ohio, and Lee is a 6-4 point guard from Hunting-ton Station, N.Y. Both Coil and Lee will join the Red Foxes as true freshmen for the 2014-15 season.

LEWIS GOES FOR 26 AT SAINT JOSEPH’S: Junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis scored a season-high 26 points at Saint Joseph’s on Nov. 15. It was the fourth time in his career he topped 25 points in a game, and it remains the highest total posted by a Red Fox in any game this sea-son.

LEWIS REACHES MILESTONE: Ju-nior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis scored his 1,000th career point against Elon on Nov. 10. Lewis became the 29th player in program history to score his 1,000th career point as a Red Foxes, and he became the 26th player to score over 1,000 points at Marist.

AS A JUNIOR, NO LESS: When he scored his 1,000th career point, swing-

man Chavaughn Lewis became the first Red Fox to reach that milestone as a junior since the 1994-95 season, a year in which both Danny Basile and Alan Tomidy accomplished that feat.

LOTS OF STARTS: Marist’s three captains - senior forward Jay Bowie, senior center Adam Kemp, and unior swingman Chavaughn Lewis - have a total of 234 collegiate starts between them.

TOUGH EARLY SEASON: Marist’s first five opponents of this season - Stony Brook, Elon, Saint Joseph’s, Providence and Maryland - combined for 108 wins last season, and all five teams advanced to postseason tour-naments.

DID WE SAY POSTSEASON: On this season’s schedule, Marist has a total of 17 games against teams which participated in postseason play last season.

LONGER BREAKS: After a stretch of four games in eight days to start the season, and then three games in four days at the Paradise Jam, Marist had eight days off before opening MAAC play at Iona on Dec. 4. That ties Marist’s second-longest in-season break of the season, trailing only a 10-day break the team has between its Dec. 22 game vs. Penn and its Jan. 2 contest against Fairfield. The Red Fox-es also had an eight-day layoff for final exams between its Dec. 6 game at home against Manhattan and its Dec. 15 contest at College of Charleston.

NEWCOMERS: Marist has three play-ers who are seeing their first collegiate action this season - Khallid Hart, Kentrall Brooks and Nick Colletta. Hart is a red-shirt freshman who sat out last season with a knee injury. Brooks and Colletta are both true freshmen. Brooks signed with Marist last November, and Colletta was the first player to sign with the Red Foxes after Jeff Bower became head coach in April.

Bowie is in his second year as a captain, while Kemp and Lewis are both in their first. All three captains will have the letter “C” displayed on their jerseys this season.

PRESEASON ALL-MAAC: Junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis and senior center Adam Kemp were each selected Preseason Second Team All-MAAC.

PRESEASON PICKS: Marist was picked to finish fifth in this year’s MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll. CHANGES IN THE CONFERENCE: After being comprised of the same 10 teams for the past 16 years, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has un-dergone changes for the 2013-14 sea-son. With the addition of Monmouth and Quinnipiac from the Northeast Conference, and the loss of Loyola to the Patriot League, the MAAC stands at 11 teams. As a result, teams will play a 20-game conference schedule this season.

WELCOME BACK, PART I: Assistant coach Paul Lee, who had spent the previous five years on Marist’s staff, has returned to serve on Jeff Bower’s staff. Lee is in his 26th year as a col-legiate coach, with previous stops at Northwestern (2000-08), Columbia (1990-2000) and Monmouth (1988-90).

WELCOME BACK, PART II: Eugene Burroughs, who had spent four years on the staff of former head coach Dave Magarity (2000-04), has re-turned for his second term as a Marist assistant. Burroughs is in his 18th

NEW FACES ON STAFF: Marist welcomes new faces on staff in Brian Adams and Denny Glunt. Adams will serve as assistant coach, and is a native of Pine Plains in Dutchess County. He worked for the NBA’s Bos-ton Celtics as video intern (2005-06) and video coordinator (2006-10), and worked for the franchise in their cham-pionship season of 2007-08. Most re-cently, he was an assistant at Harvard the last two seasons, helping lead the Crimson to an NCAA Tournament victory in 2013. Glunt, a 2011 graduate of Penn State, will serve as director of men’s basketball operations. He was a volunteer assistant for the Lock Haven women’s basketball program in 2011-12, and was the assistant director of equipment operations at Navy in the 2012-13 season.
