Question: Do cows really have 2 or 3 stomachs? What does that look like?

Answer: Cows are amazing, spectacular creatures (in my opinion). They actually have 4 stomachs—or rather 1 stomach divided into 4 compartments! They are part of a group of animals classified as ruminants. Other ruminants are deer, sheep, goats and giraffes. These very special animals can do something that the rest of us mammals can’t. They can take any fibrous stringy food—like grass—and make from it, in their own body, the complete protein that contains all of the amino acids needed to grow and sustain life. The rest of us must consume eggs, milk, specific combinations of foods, or some other creature to obtain this complete protein. We can’t make it out of a mass of fiber like a ruminant does. This is what the 4 “stomachs” are all about. “The typical ruminant is an animal that survives by fleeing from danger. It is a prey species. It goes out into an open, grassy area…and eats as rapidly as possible, swallowing its food without chewing. Then it goes off to a safe place and brings up the undigested grass, or cud, one mouthful at a time and chews it thoroughly before swallowing it again.” (Keeping a Family Cow 632.2142/Gro). The cud then passes into the second stomach, where microorganisms that live in the cow’s gut begin to break it down into amino acids. And so forth, through all 4 stomachs. The result is a complete protein. This is how ruminants can survive on food that other animals could not possibly digest. Then the cow feeds us! Thank you, Bessy! If you want to look at a drawing of the cow’s stomach, check out Keeping a Family Cow and look at p. 134.
