Galapagos Islands & EcuadorCruise & Tour

Daphne Island, Galapagos (cruising)Located between the islands of Santa Cruz and Santiago, Daphne Islandis restricted to most tourists but is a popular stop for scientists researchingthe unique qualities of the Galapagos finches.Puerto Egas, SantiagoPuerto Egas has a long, lava shoreline where eroded rock formationshouse an excellent variety of wildlife, including marine and land iguanas aswell as crabs and fur sea lions. This is not only a perfect place forsnorkeling and seeing many species of tropical fish, but a great spot forboth land and water photography.Rabida IslandThe high amount of iron contained in Rabida’s lava gives a distinctive redcast to its beach, cliffs and steep slopes of volcanic cinders. White-cheeked pintail ducks live in a salt-water lagoon near the beach wherebrown pelicans and boobies have built their nests. Finches, doves, yellowwarblers and mockingbirds can be found inland, but the trail can be steepand challenging.Elizabeth Bay (Isabela Island)The sea horse shape of Isabela Island is the product of six large volcanosmerging into one landmass. With many rocky inlets accessible by dinghy,Elizabeth Bay is a great place to spot penguins and blue-footed boobies, and its clear water and profusion of marine life is perfect for snorkelingamong schools of colorful fish.Caleta Tagus (Isabela)Located across from Fernandina Island, Tagus Grove has been a popularanchorage site on Isabela Island since the 1800s. Hiking the trails windingaround Lake Darwin and up to a ridge is rather challenging, but the viewsare priceless. Sullivan Bay (Santiago)Sullivan Bay is a fascinating study in geology and volcanology. Your firststep onto the black lava field will transport you to the surface of an alienplanet with its wavy lava “ropes,” gas bubbles, elephantine wrinkles andtree trunk molds permanently trapped in lava from the 1897 eruption.

Bartolome Island (Santiago)Enjoy an exhilarating Zodiac-ride along the coast to see volcanic conesexposed by erosion and small lava tunnels that have flowed into theocean. Hike across the Isthmus and search for Galapagos hawks, seaturtles and other shore birds. Snorkelers may see yellow tailedsurgeonfish, parrot fish, and the small damsel fish.Las Bachas (Santa Cruz)The sand at Las Bachas is made of decomposed coral, making it whiteand soft and a favorite site for nesting sea turtles. The fine sand makesthe shallow water too cloudy for snorkeling, but it’s great for swimming.Look for the colorful Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, flamingos, whimbrels, blue herons, semipalmated plovers and possibly a sea turtle.North Seymour (Galapagos)Zip along the coastline aboard a Zodiak as you search for Galapagos furseals, lava herons, and swallow tailed gulls near North Seymour. You mayalso see blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, and frigate birds. Thegeology of this area is quite interesting, due to the limestone trappedbetween two layers of basalt lava.
