Save the Date for our Sommer Biergarten Series and Summer Events

Craft Beer and Sausage Sampler : A GAI Member Night! Part of the Sommer Biergarten Series Friday, July 14, 6pm to 9pm The name says it all! Spend an evening on the GAI grounds sampling craft beer from various microbreweries and different artisan sausages. This is a great way to support a variety of local breweries without the extra commuting. This year’s participating breweries include: Bad Weather Brewing, Tin Whiskers Brewing, and Summit Brewery.

Wiener Kaffeehaus Friday, July 23, 2pm-4pm Presentation at 2pm, Coffee service at 3pm $15 GAI Members, $20 Non-members (includes presentation, Kaffee, and Torte) Registration available online Enjoy a presentation and an authentic cultural experience at our Wiener Kaffeehaus. While you can find coffee houses in Paris, Berlin, or Salzburg, a true Kaffeehaus Kultur can only be found in Vienna. The Wiener Kaffeehaus (Viennese Coffee House) is a gathering place for artists, intellectuals, politicians, and poor students alike. More than a gathering place, in Vienna, coffee is a way of life, so much so that UNESCO added Viennese Coffee House culture to their list of intangible cultural heritage. Attendees of our Wiener Kaffeehaus will enjoy a presentation on Kaffeehaus Kultur by Ms. Monika Fulton, and then participate in a mock Kaffeehaus experience by ordering coffee from a 'Karte' and the ritual of enjoying coffee with Sachertorte in true Wiener Kaffeehaus style.

Abend im Alsace Part of the Sommer Biergarten Series Friday, August 11, 6pm-9pm Free Admission: Food and Drink sold À la carte. This August, we are proud to partner with Alliance Française to bring a cross-cultural Biergarten night; Abend im Alsace. Alsace (spelled Elsass in German) is a region in northeastern France along the Rhine River plain. Bordering Germany and Switzerland, it has alternated

between German and French control over the centuries, creating a unique blend of language, culture, and cuisine. At our Abend im Alsace, you can enjoy tasting Flammkuchen (Alsatian Pizza) or Alsatian Schnitzel while enjoying the warm, summer evening on our beautiful grounds. Sip on French wine or a German beer while listening to traditional French-Alsatian folk music by Philip Gallandat and Yvonne Peralta.

Social Science: Fermentational Informational At the Science Museum of Minnesota Thursday, July 13, 6pm-10pm For Ages 21 + Each month, the Science Museum of Minnesota stays open late for adults to let loose and learn about an interesting topic in a fun, sociable way. The GAI is joining in the fun for July’s Social Science: Fermentational Informational—after all, who knows the processes making of sauerkraut better than us? We invite you to come along for the fun and visit the GAI table as well as the 10 breweries, and many other organizations that will be in residence at the Science Museum. Put beer under the microscope and celebrate the biology, chemistry, and hand-to-mouth physics that delight your senses. If you would like to attend, visit the Science Museum website for tickets and more information.

In Memoriam - Frank Parnell With deeply grieving hearts, we announce the passing of a GAI legend, Frank Parnell. Frank had been an active GAI member and volunteer for over four decades, during which he also served on the Board of Directors. Additionally, Frank served in such essential support roles as Mr. Fix-it, electrician, Damenklub dough-roller, Stammtisch dish washer extraordinaire, Legacy Society Charter Member, snow blower operator, Bratwurst griller, squirrel trapper, and all around hero to our staff and community. The breadth of Frank’s talents and contributions to the GAI is enormous, and we miss him dearly. We extend our sympathies and support to Helga and their entire family.

A ‘Clean Slate’: New GAI Roof Installation! Work is well underway on the GAI’s roof restoration project! Back in March, we were awarded a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant totaling $136,300. This grant, awarded by the Minnesota Historical Society, enables us to restore the roof on our 111-year-old Haus back to the slate tiling as cited in the original building permit. At the beginning of May, work began on this long-awaited project. Here’s to a beautiful, historical Haus we can continue to be proud of for generations to come!
