Ascot is situated in beautiful wooded country-side, not far from London, and depicts an idyllicportrait of traditional British sporting heritage.Without doubt the centrepiece of the village isits famous racecourse, which has put Ascot onthe global map and dates to the 1700s.

Each June, the village welcomes thousands ofspectators to Royal Ascot, the most famousevent in the horseracing calendar. Royal Ascot isEurope's premier flat race meeting and thesocial highlight of the British summer.

Former RedBull Air Racewinner SteveJones, andex-US Navalaviator JimDiMatteo arethe two RaceDirectors ofthe Red BullAir RaceWorld Championship. They make sure thateverything revolved around the flying runssmoothly.

“In the run-up to the flying over a race week wekeep a watchful eye on the organisation to makesure everything is in order," said Jones. "It's justmaking sure everything is going to work as itshould. We're looking out for issues that otherpeople may not of spotted. We're there ultimately so on Race Day everyone can racesafely and fairly,” he added.

The role of the Race Director doesn't just beginin Race Week though; they are involved withmany other aspects as well, including dealingwith each countries aviation authorities and thedesign of the racetrack. American Legend has installed and certified the180-horsepower Titan OX340 engine in its SuperLegend. Dubbed the Super Legend HP, the aircraft becomes the highest performing modelin the Legend Cub lineup. The first SuperLegend HP made an appearance at Sun ‘n Fun Fly-in 2015, grabbing the attention ofmany enthusiastic pilots.

The Titan-powered Super Legend HP boasts anamazing ground roll of 35 feet. It can clear a 50-foot obstacle in a scant 200 feet and achievesclimb out in the 2,000 fpm range. Offering cruisespeeds of up to 104 mph TAS, at 2,150 rpm, theSuper Legend HP has no equal.

During July, A plane powered only by lithium batteries has successfully crossed theChannel, from Lydd Airport in Kent to Calais.Pilot Didier Estyene's E-Fan plane was air-borne for around 40 minutes.

However, it is understood that another Frenchpilot, Hugues Duval, may have beaten him to the record of the first cross-Channel flight in an electric-powered plane, flying from Calais toEngland and back again.

Airbus immediately cried foul, claiming HuguesDuval’s effort should not be counted as the firstofficial electric-powered flight because his Crici plane is believed to have been launchedfrom another aircraft.

Duval flew fromthe French port of Calais to theEnglish shoreline andback onThursday nightin the one-seat Crici plane. His22-mile journeyis considered amilestone in theattempt to makeelectric flights aviable form oftravel. Duval told the Associated Press that his successful flight was a relief and an importantmoment after years of developing the plane andflying it over land.

The afternoon sessions will address the futureopportunities and challenges for the Europeanrotorcraft sector: Futureproof – Three Perspectiveswill look at new technologies, procedures andtechnical applications.

A new addition to the Business and StrategyConference will incorporate two Focus On sessions, the first of which will explore the business opportunities afforded by the developingUnmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) sector onTuesday afternoon. UAVs have the potential tosupplant helicopters across multiple missions -aerial photography, surveillance for emergencyservices, power lines, security and crop manage-ment, to name some examples.

This extended session will explore the strategicoperational, regulatory, safety issues for rotorcraftoperators to consider before they diversify intoUAVs; how to develop sustainable business models for incorporating a UAV division into helicopter operations and how will rapidly evolving UAV technology impact business models and operations.

The second Focus-On session, on Wednesdayafternoon, will look at offshore wind farms as apotential growth area for the rotorcraft industry.

This will includean analysis ofglobal markettrends andopportunities for offshore wind farms, includingthe predicted growth in offshore wind farms;technology developments impacting on growthand transport support requirements.

New - Learning & Skills Zone

A new initiative being launched at HelitechInternational 2015 is the Learning & Skills Zonewhich is designed for young people who areinterested in potential careers within the rotarywing industry. The zone will provide an introduc-tion to the various paths available, covering keyareas such as design and engineering as well ascatering for budding pilots.

Helicentre Aviation Academy will be offering visitors the opportunity to explore their ground-breaking BSc (Hons) Professional Aviation PilotPractice (Helicopter) Degree programme. Otherparticipants include organisations such as theAir Cadets, British Gliding Association andNorwich International Aviation Academy. This new zone will offer an ideal opportunity tolearn about the rotary wing industry in all itsdiversity. In parallel with the Learning & SkillsZone, the Aviation Skills Award for the rotorcraftindustry is also being launched at this year’sevent. Sopwith Snipeand Albatros D.Vafly at Old Warden

Following an engine-run on Tuesday, onWednesday afternoon 15 July, the Snipe andAlbatros flew. This was a test prior to theShuttleworth “Best of British” Airshow at OldWarden on Saturday 18 July.

At around 1630hrs, the planes were wheeled-out, and then first the Albatros, followed by the Snipe, took to the air. They wereflying around until 20:30hrs sounding superb,and looking fantastic, especially with some nicetopsides! Excellent work from team at The Vintage Aviator, and from Shuttleworth for hosting their arrival and test-flying.

Airbus Corporate Jet Centre (ACJC), the specialist in Airbus Corporate Jet VIP cabin completion and customised nose-to-tail services,has delivered a new lightweight ACJ319 VVIPcabin. This technical revolution, fulfilling an Asiancustomer’s expectations in terms of range andcomfort, is based on the latest wireless technologies and a totally new creative design.

A new lightweight VVIP cabin has been deliveredon time by the Airbus Corporate Jet Centre to anundisclosed customer in Asia, who requested tofly from Southern Asia to Los Angeles. ACJCexceeded its customer’s expectation by deliveringa VIP cabin 10% lighter than contractual commit-ment, while assuring the very high quality of thecabin, both in terms of comfort and systems.

As part of Airbus’ demonstration tour, the newAirbus A350 XWB airliner made a stop at theEAA AirVenture Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA earlyduring the event. The result of this trip was manysatisfied airshow fans!

After departing Milwaukee’s General MitchellInternational Airport in the early afternoon, theA350 made its way towards Oshkosh and theannual fly-in. The first pass was a low and slowapproach, giving everyone the opportunity tosee the aircraft in the landing configuration.

The aircrew then did a sweet climb out followedby several more passes. These passes demon-strated the slow speed handling of the A350 andthe turning radius. After about 8 min of demon-stration time, the aircrew finally set the newAirbus down on runway 36, utilizing reversethrust to stop the aircraft at show center.

DELIVERIESBombardierDelivers 47, sells 8 Aircraftin Second Quarter, Delays Global 7000

Bombardier Global 7000 aircraft.

Bombardier delivered 47 business aircraft during the second quarter of 2015, up from 38jets in the same period of 2014. It also said thatthe Global 7000 will be delayed by two years.

But Bombardier only took eight new business jetorders during the period. This compares to 30 orders for its business jets in the secondquarter of 2014. It is unclear if that company hadany cancellations in this quarter. The companysold 19 aircraft during the first quarter of 2015,giving Bombardier a total of 27 orders for thefirst half of the year.

“Current economic conditions and geopoliticalissues in some regions, such as Latin America,

China and Russia, have had an impact on industry-wide order intake.” said the company in its second quarter financial report.

Having ‘paused’ its new LearJet 85 program earlier in the year, Bombardier used its InvestorRelations call to announce a two year delay to its Global 7000 program. The company says thatbuilding the next generation of Global family aircraft presents challenges.

Although the Global 7000 schedule has slipped,Bombardier says that the prototype is currently in final production, and a further three aircraft arebeing built. The aircraft is now scheduled to enterservice in the second half of 2018. The delay tothe Global 7000 program comes two months after Bombardier announced a production rate cut on Global family aircraft.

For Sikorsky now read Lockheed Martin.

Lockheed Martin has purchased SikorskyHelicopters for $9 billion. The actual priceLockheed will pay is reduced to around $7.1 billion due to account tax benefits as a result ofthe acquisition. The purchase still subject to regulatory approvals, but is expected to be completed by the end of the fourth quarter of2015, or early in the first quarter of 2016.

“Sikorsky is a natural fit for Lockheed Martinand complements our broad portfolio of world-class aerospace and defense products and technologies,” said Marillyn Hewson, Lockheed

Martin chairman, president and CEO. “I’m confident this acquisition will help us extend ourcore business into the growing areas of helicopter production and sustainment. Together,we’ll offer a strong portfolio of helicopter solutions to our global customers and acceleratethe pace of innovation and new technologydevelopment.”

Sikorsky’s parent company United TechnologiesCorporation had said earlier the year that following a strategic portfolio review they werelooking at different options for its helicopter unit.

Following the review, UTC found that Sikorsky’sfive to six percent annual growth lagged behindthe average 10 percent annual growth of othercompanies under its umbrella. For LockheedMartin, the acquisition gives the company afoothold in the helicopter market, something thatis missing from its diverse defence portfolio.Sikorsky’s revenue in 2014 was $7 billion, with abacklog valued at $16 billion.

ORDERSTenAgustaWestland AW189 Helissold to Russia

Finmeccanica-AgustaWestland announced mid-July that it had signed a contract for the saleof ten AW189 commercial helicopters to RN-Aircraft, a subsidiary of the oil company Rosneft.The contract foresees that the new helicopterswill be used for transportation purposes.

Delivery of the aircraft is expected between 2015and 2017. Moreover, as already set out in theframework agreement signed in December 2014and with the involvement of Russian Helicopters,a subsidiary of Rostec corporation, Rosneftplans to order further helicopters by 2025, for atotal of up to 160 units.

The parties also reached an agreement for theprogressive restructuring of HeliVert, a 50-50Finmeccanica-AgustaWestland and RussianHelicopters joint venture, which foresees thefuture participation of Rosneft, worth 30% of theshares. Subsequently, shares in HeliVert will beredistributed as follows: 40% to Finmeccanica-AgustaWestland, 30% to Russian Helicopters,30% to Rosneft.

AgustaWestland has achieved EASA type certification less than five years after the AW169programme launch. This achievement has beenmade possible also due to the strong collabora-tion between the EASA and AgustaWestlandteams. With the AW169, AgustaWestland hasresponded to market demand for a new genera-tion versatile light-intermediate twin-engine heli-copter and has achieved its aim of greatly reducing the time to market, whilst meeting the

most stringent operational and safety require-ments set by the certification authorities and bythe market. More than 150 AW169 helicoptershave been ordered by customers around theworld to date, including framework contracts andoptions, for a wide range of applications including executive/corporate transport, airambulance, law enforcement, offshore transportand utility roles. Designed with inherent dual-usecapabilities, the AW169 is also ideally suited forthe wide scope of parapublic and governmentapplications and will be able to meet military andnaval requirements.

SOLO PILOT RESCUESolo R22 pilot rescued after 32 hours on ice floe

The rescue was made by the Canadian Coast Guard shipPierre Radisson after the crew spotted a red flare.

Russian pilot Sergey Ananov was most of theway to completing a solo circumnavigation ina Robinson R22. He had refuelled in Iqaluit,Nunavut, and was on a 500 mile leg to Nuukin Greenland when contact was lost.

He was reported overdue at 3.20pm Easterntime on Saturday 25th July. Weather conditionswere hazardous with freezing temperatures and fog.

Ananov said his helicopter went down after oneof two rubber belts leading from the engine tothe rotor exploded. He said he was able to partially pull on his survival suit and scrambleinto a small life raft before the aircraft sank in amatter of about 30 seconds. It was then a short,cold swim to an ice floe.

Ananov said the raft provided his only means ofshelter as he waited to be rescued, a prospectthat proved difficult with thick fog and a low ceiling in the area. At one point he fired one ofhis three flares as a Canadian military Herculesaircraft flew overhead. “It was absolutely uselessbecause they couldn’t see anything,” he said.

The search effort included two Hercules aircraft,and a AW101 Cormorant helicopter. A TransportCanada patrol plane and a fishing boat in thearea are also assisting. The Canadian ForcesJoint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax tookthe lead role in the task, and the project supportteam were prepared for the worst. The rescuewas made by the Canadian Coast Guard shipPierre Radisson after the crew spotted a redflare. The ship is now routing back to Iqaluit with the pilot aboard, having been picked up200 miles out on the 500 mile leg to Greenland.

UAV-DronesThe RPAS ‘Open Category’ in EASA’s Concept ofOperations for DronesIn a new position paper, ECA outlines theposition of Europe’s professional pilots onthe standards and rules necessary for thesafe use of drones in EASA’s ‘Open’ category.

Acknowledging thepotential this technology has for innovation and benefit to society, it isabsolutely critical that the technology is introducedsafely, in particular with regard to existing mannedaviation. A future accident involving drones in whichpeople are seriously harmed will do far more damage to the industry’s development than careful-ly thought out, effective, efficient regulation. The following points summarise this paper.

The safety of human beings is paramountIt must always be the case that real people, whetherin the air or on the ground, have their safety priori-tised over the ability or right to operate a drone. It must be born in mind that most drones in theOpen category will be mass market consumerproducts, may have significantly different capabili-ties in a few years, and any regulation needs to dealwith this. This cannot happen without proper riskassessment, especially of midair collision risk.

Design requirements for the physical performancecapability of drones in the Open categoryThere is a compromising lack of scientific and engineering research on the effects of drone collisions with aircraft. This must be conducted as a

matter of urgency to assess and refine these or anyother proposed technical standards. They include:Maximum achievable distance from pilot of less than500m horizontally and 50m in height;- Auto avoidance of restricted areas e.g. by geo-fencing, or transponder technology;- Auto recovery in the event of loss of control;- Weight limited to 500g, subject to density, frangibility and part weight specifications that wouldprevent catastrophic damage to manned aviation;- Maximum speed to allow control, recognition andlimit kinetic energy;- Colour, visibility and lighting standards to allow visu-al recognition and avoidance;- Marking and registration of the drone to allow trac-ing of pilot/operator.

Operational requirements for drones in theOpen category:- Unilateral obligation to avoid manned aviation;- Operation restricted to Visual Line of Sight (VLOS);- No operation in the vicinity of third persons withouttheir consent, or crowds;- No operation in areas with manned aviation (e.g.accident sites, operational traffic areas);- Appropriate training / education of the drone pilotprior to operation;

Operation only for recreational purposes.- Commercial operation should be dealt with in theSpecific or Regulated category.- Mandatory insurance, non-punitive safety reportingobligations, and stricter rules for commercial opera-tions all need to be part of the package too.

UAV – Competion DronesFAI Captures the Trendof Drones and Opens itsDoors to this NewBooming Activity - First ever FAI-sanctioned drone sportingactivity coming soon!

From a rare object accessible only to a few to awidely distributed product affordable by many,drones have become incredibly popular in thespace of a few years thanks to the miniaturisa-tion of on-board electronic devices andadvanced flight systems.

In this context, it was logi-cal that the FAI, and par-ticularly its AeromodellingCommission (CIAM),actively contribute to theirdevelopment, and evenmore natural to includethem in its activities giventheir huge potential interms of participants andtypes of event. This hasnow happened anddrone model aircraft are officially part of CIAM following the publication of a CIAM draft rule document for sportive and recreational activitieswith drones and especially multi-rotors (rotorcraftwith more than two rotors).

CIAM is now identifying correspondents in a maxi-mum of FAI member countries in order to establishan informal CIAM group tasked to find out the bestway to spread this sport internationally; to discusstopics such as the impact of Civil AviationAuthorities Regulations on drone model aircraftactivities and to evaluate the CIAM draft rule document based on feedback from events organised with drones.

AerobaticsThe objective is to modify the draft rules as neces-sary taking into account potential for growth, ease oforganisation as well as media and spectator friendliness. In short, all that is needed to guaranteehighly exciting, easy-to-follow and enjoyable competitions for the pilots and the spectators alike.Indeed, CIAM’s intention is to be the main actor inthe development of drone competitions and a pointof reference for all the event organisers. With this purpose, a new section has been created on the FAI website where visitors can find official informationabout drones and download the CIAM draft rule document for events. In the Freestyle Aerobaticscontest, flights are going to be scored on a series of criteria which include difficulty, harmony, creativity,precision and safety presentation for both theFreestyle and the Music Freestyle rounds.

Recreational Events These events are going to be based on exciting andchallenging flight tasks to be completed by rotorcraftor fixed wing (aeroplane or glider) drone model aircraft in a given time. They include deck landing,ground targets to find, speed, tunnel, slalom andpylon racing, to name a few. Some of them areadapted for FPV flight.

Drone model aircraft and Unmanned AerialVehicle (UAV) To precisely determine what drones and UAV's arewas the first task carried out by the temporary CIAMWorking Group chaired in 2014 by Bruno Delor.Indeed, both are aircraft that do not carry humanbeings, so what differentiates them?

Drones are aircraft of limited dimensions which are used for competitions, sport or recreational purposes. UAV's (or RPA's) however, are aerodynes(aircraft heavier than air) with a means of propulsionand are used for scientific research for commercial,governmental or military purposes.

Lower Saxony Police –or NeidersachsenPolizei in local lan-guage – have two newAirbus EC135P2e helicopters on order.The first aircraft wasdue for delivery in June, with the second following in the fourth quarter of 2015. Both will be based at LangenhagenInternational Airport in Hannover.

Very little role equipment is visible from earlyphotos of the aircraft concerned, with just a loud-hailer system visible mounted centrally under thecabin, and long steps fitted halfway up the skidswhich would be suitable for mounting IR turret,searchlight, etc. Contract value is around 22Million Euros.

The two new helicopters replace two very oldSA365C Dauphins, registered D-HOPE and D-HOPQ, which were introduced to the fleet in1979 and 1980. Lower Saxony Police also operates a pair of MD Explorers.

SEARCH AND RESCUENew UK search and rescuehelicopter service takes offFrom mid-July

Caernarfon civilian UK search and rescue helicopter serv-ice oprovided by Bristow Search and Rescue.

The launch of the Caernarfon civilian UK searchand rescue helicopter service, which replacesthe former RAF Valley rescue service, wasmarked with a ceremony held at the town’s airport. Bristow Helicopters Ltd is operating thesearch and rescue helicopter service for the UKon behalf of HM Coastguard.

The Caernarfon base went live on 1 July and hasalready responded to calls.The base was officially opened by Richard Parkes, director ofmaritime operations at the Maritime andCoastguard Agency, and was attended by representatives from the RAF 22 Squadron.

The German Federal Police created a modernenvironment through the extension to the avia-tion school in Hangelar near Bonn in 2014 - andnow the instructors have started with even moremodern media when it comes to training content. The German Federal Police have introduced the training software from ProPilotsto train their pilots.

The aviation school with its 1,230 square metresnext to three flight simulators for different helicoptermodels gives its learners the most modern

technology as well as a feel-good atmosphere.The training for learners and experienced pilots ismade easier by the introduction of the web-basedtraining software from ProPilots.

The software is based on 3D animated videos aswell as specialist texts from experts worldwide anddetailed images. This allows you to present veryrealistic emergency situations in online simulationstoo and train for them. The pilots develop a completely new confidence of action because theycan practice as often as they want with the aid ofthe computer. This is a perfect complement tousing flight simulators.

The training software plans recurring mental train-ing in the areas of emergency situations and TypeRating Tests thus also providing manual skills andreactions. The Type Rating Test is extended withinnovative ideas e.g. realistically presented emergency situations in the cockpit or interactivequestions which the user has to answer by clickingon the mouse or via a touchscreen. This form oftraining is lastingly efficient, far removed from conventional learning materials and allows a realistic experience of emergency situations - thebasic conditions for correct actions in extreme situations.
