At the beginning of 2014 the grass runway andtaxiway at Aero-Delahaye were reinforced withthe PERFO system, allowing flight operations allyear round.

THE PERFO® GROUND REINFORCEMENT SYSTEM, supplied by the S2T GROUP, is the No.1solution for the reinforcement of grass surfaces onairfields such as runways, taxiways and parkingareas. It has been used successfully at numerousaerodromes across Europe for over 16 years. The system of interlocking tiles were installed atAero Delahaye in the period between Christmasand New Year 2013/14. A total area of 7500 m²was used to create the reinforced runway and taxiway and was installed by a small team of volunteers in just 10 days using a 4 tonne tandemvibrating roller, with helpful guidance from S2T.

The owners and residents of the Aero Delahaye Air Park are convinced that this has been a very worthwhile investment allowing the residents andvisitors to use the taxiway and runway all the yearround without worrying about problems related to soft ground. The resulting improved and consistent take-off distance increases safety and also allows larger aircraft to operate fromVerchocq, making it a more attractive location for a wider range of potential customers / aircraftowners and future residents, as these followingtestimonials show:

As demonstrated at Aero Delahaye, the PERFO system provides an effective and environmentally

acceptable solution to upgrade grass airstrips to allweather runways at a fraction of the cost of tarmacor concrete and with far fewer issues with regard toplanning and approvals and the related costs.

The grass surface is reinforced with PERFO, yet it is not sealed and natural drainage is maintained.Grass grows quickly back through the PERFO tilesafter installation restoring the airstrip’s naturalappearance and character. Another major advantage is that the system can be installed intothe existing grass surface in a short time with minimum disruption to airfield operations and usingthe airfield’s own labour force. The system is resistant to UV, frost and environmentally neutraland does not rot, remaining effective for decades.

Our PERFO-SD standard tiles are generally usedfor runways and taxiways on GA aerodromes withmore heavy duty options available for criticalapplications, such as areas frequently traffickedby heavy vehicles, eg. fuel bowsers, gliderwinch trucks etc.

Cessna Aircraft will add a diesel Turbo Skyhawk JT-A to its product line in 2015.

Topping a list of Cessna Aircraft news releasedat EAA AirVenture is a 155-horsepower diesel-powered Cessna 172 Turbo Skyhawk JT-A. NowCessna Aircraft has two diesel-engine aircraft inits single-engine line. The company displayed aCessna 172 Turbo Skyhawk JT-A at EAAAirVenture and said that certification is expected"soon" for the Cessna 182 Turbo Skylane JT-A.

The Skyhawk JT-A is powered by a 155-horse-power Continental CD-155 diesel engine that isclaimed to extend the aircraft's range to 1,012nautical miles, a 58-percent jump over the standard Skyhawk, and to increase speed to131 knots true airspeed while burning 25 percent less fuel. It will be offered as an optionin 2015.

The engine is already certified by the EuropeanAviation Safety Agency for retrofit to newerSkyhawks under a supplemental type certificate.“We’ve been working for a few years now to findnew, reliable alternative fuel solutions for theCessna Skyhawk to meet changing environmen-tal regulations, particularly in Europe, as well asthe limited global supply of (avgas),” said JoeHepburn, Cessna’s senior vice president of piston aircraft. “The recent advances and grow-ing maturity in diesel engine technology in theaviation market now give us the means to satisfya growing demand around the world.”

The Continental Motors CD-155 engine wasoriginally designed and produced by the ThielertAircraft Engines as the Centurion 2.0S. (Piper isusing the same engine in its Archer DX.) Cessnahas long sought to produce a diesel Skyhawk,

and in 2007 the company announced that itwould start deliveries of Thielert-powered trainersthe following year. But Thielert-powered aircraftwere plagued by operational problems, theengines weren't granted their projected 2,400lifespans, and the German company was forcedinto bankruptcy. Continental purchased the com-pany in 2013 and plans to produce a full rangeof diesel aircraft engines ranging from 135 to300 horsepower.

The Skylane JT-A, announced at EAA AirVenture2012, uses the Safran SMA SR305-230 engine.Cessna plans to station up to six Skylane JT-Amarketing demonstrators around the world andbegin deliveries upon certification. The dieselSkylane has a range at max cruise speed of1,025 nautical miles with a ceiling of 20,000 feetand a useful load estimated at 1,000 pounds.

Also during EAA AirVenture, Cessna announcedthe first flight of the first production CitationCJ3+ business jet and new seating options forthe Cessna 206 Stationair.

Cessna now offers up to five different cabin seat-ing options for the Cessna 206 Stationair that areto be available in 2015. The aircraft uses 100LLfuel. The cabin can be arranged quickly for two,three, or four passengers. The two-passengeroption is referred to as a "limo" arrangement.The quick change in configuration is possiblethanks to seat belts that are attached to theseats, and a new rear seat-rail system that allowseats to easily be removed or reconfigured.Passenger seats will be similar to luxury carseats.

The Cessna TTx will get what is called a “Surge”package that includes a special paint scheme, two-tone leather seats, and a Blackmac C447 aluminium propeller that is approved for flight intoknown icing.

FUTURE AVIATIONAOPA tests new waysto open doors to aviation- Association explores lower-cost ownership model

AOPA is exploringhow aircraft owner-ship may be moreaffordable than manypeople believethrough the develop-ment of “ReimaginedAircraft” that can beco-owned and operated for around $65 an hour,including fuel.

AOPA believes that older airplanes updated fromtip to tail may be one way to truly bring downthe cost of flying for many more people. Whenowned and operated in a community-like a flyingclub, partnership, or flight school-ReimaginedAircraft have the potential to allow many morepeople to fly and become engaged in generalaviation in ways that are impossible through singular aircraft ownership. The association haschosen the Cessna 150 and 152 to test out thisconcept because they are dependable, simpleto maintain, inexpensive to operate, and aboveall fun to fly.

“Aviators know how much fun it is to fly, and wewant more people to have that experience,” said AOPA President Mark Baker. “In testing thisconcept, we hope to show that’s it’s possible tohave access to fun, easy-to-fly airplanes withupdated technology and components at a pricemany more people can afford. Finding a way tomake flying, and even co-owning, an airplanemore accessible is a perfect fit with our otherefforts.” AOPA has partnered with Aviat Aircraftand will spend the remainder of the year substantiating the concept.

The idea for Reimagined Aircraft grew out of adesire to take a comprehensive approach togrowing the pilot population and making it easier for today’s pilots to fly more. In an effortto reverse rising costs and reduce barriers to flying, AOPA and the general aviation industryhave begun looking to the certified fleet of existing general aviation aircraft for part of theanswer. AOPA thinks these aircraft, appropriatelyupdated, can offer a good recreational andtransportation value for pilots and would-bepilots.

AOPA and Aviat will test this concept witharound a dozen Cessna 150s and 152s that will have a base price of $89,900 and $99,900respectively, after they have been carefully refurbished, overhauled, given new interiors and paint, and much more.

The new high-resolution infraredtouchscreen display compliments the existing10.6-inch G3X Touch system, offering newpanel design options and redundancy. All G3X Touch displays support Connextcockpit connectivity between avionics andmobile devices featuring wireless flight plantransfer capabilities and more.

Three iconic First WorldWar Aircraft arrive at RAFMuseum Cosford

On Tuesday 15 July staff at the Royal Air ForceMuseum Cosford received three iconic FirstWorld War aircraft, which will form the centre of anew First World War Exhibition. The Bristol M1c,the Sopwith 1 ½ Strutter and the Sopwith Pup aredue to go on display within the Museum’s WarPlanes Hangar in December 2014.

The Sopwith Pup is an original aircraft which wasactive during the First World War. The Pup, thought of by its pilots as the perfect flying machine, wasused extensively by the Royal Naval Air Service andthe Royal Flying Corps both at home and abroad.The Bristol M1c and Sopwith 1 ½ Strutter are fullscale reproductions.

The aircraft were transported from the RAF MuseumLondon, along the M1, M6 and M54 motorways bytwo low loader lorries. Delighted members of thepublic and Museum staff welcomed the aircraftarrivals late afternoon, before they were placed insidethe Museum’s Conservation Centre. The SopwithPup will undergo some minor fabric repair work tothe tail before going on public display later this year.

The three aircraft are to be exhibited as part of theMuseum’s First World War Exhibition, opening inDecember 2014 which will allow museum audiencesto discover and explore the unique and often over-looked role of air power during the First World Warthrough the incredible stories of the men and womenwho took part. The exhibition ‘First World War In TheAir’, was made possible with a grant of £898,558from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The E-Fan, developed by Airbus, is a prototypehybrid electric motor glider which will first beused for training pilots.

The twoseater electric aircraft is powered by twobatteries, producing 60 kilowatts of power, whichwill be able to run for half an hour. Jean Botti,chief technical officer, Airbus Group noted“Besides the benefits of noise and emissionsreduction, the reduced cost of training pilotswith the E-Fan is incredible.“It costs about twocents per hour to fly the electric plane, a numberwhich is up to 20-50 times cheaper than the nor-mal fuel costs of today's aircraft.”

European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)certification has been awarded for the CitationM2 business jet, paving the way for deliveriesto begin in Europe immediately. This latest certification comes just two weeks afterCessna’s receipt of EASA certification for itsCitation Sovereign+.

The Citation M2 has a maximum cruise speed of404 knots true airspeed and a range of 1,580nm.It can operate at airports with runways as shortas 3,210 feet and will climb to 41,000 feet in 24 minutes. Private jet sales are rising again, climbing out ofa deep recession when the company plane wasan easytarget for spending cuts.

The chief executive of General Dynamics Corp.,maker of Gulfstream jets, says corporate cus-tomers are back and wealth creation is bringingout shoppers for private jets. The president of jetengine maker Pratt & Whitney says deliveries forprivate planes are growing after hitting bottom in2011.

The improving market has not been universal.Signs of strength have been in large-cabinplanes, while sales of small and mid-sized planesstall. Credit markets also have not fully recov-ered, making it harder to finance some private-plane purchases.

Richard Aboulafia, an aerospace consultant,compared the industry’s uneven improvementwith the bumpy economic recovery. “In its ownvery high-end way, it mirrors what’s going on,”he said. “It’s the haves and the have-nots, but it’sall haves.” General Dynamics CEO PhebeNovakovic told investor analysts in May that cor-porate customers have returned and “the worldhas experienced enormous wealth creation,” withthe rich shopping for planes.

Pratt & Whitney Canada, a business jet enginemanufacturer that laid off more than 400 workersin 2009 and 2010 - about 4.5 percent of its work-force — has a “very solid pipeline of products,”President Paul Adams told reporters in May. The subsidiary of Hartford-based UnitedTechnologies Corp. has “steady growth in product deliveries,” he said.

Improvements in the top part of the business —jets costing $26 million or more — have driven

the market’s recovery, he said. Total businessjet deliveries were valued at $20.9 billionin2013, compared with a peak of $24.7 billion in2008, Aboulafia said. The industry hit bottom at$18 billion in deliveries in 2012, he said.

Shipments of business jets peaked at 1,313 in2008 and tumbled to 672 in 2012, a 48 percentdrop, according to the General AviationManufacturers Association. The number rose in2013 by a tiny 0.9 percent, but it was the firsttime in five years that shipments had increasedfrom one year to the next.

The business jet became a symbol of corporateexcess when Detroit auto executives flew toWashington seeking bailout money. AndCitigroup, which downplayed the risks of subprime mortgages, was pressured by theWhite House to cancel the planned delivery of a jet.

Aboulafia said in a report in April that even inthe recession, sales rose 0.3 percent for the tophalf of the private jet market. The bottom half,which accounts for jets costing $4 million to $26 million, fell nearly 56 percent, “one of theworst market cataclysms to ever impact anymature industry segment,” he said. The poorperformance of small and mid-sized businessjet purchases are partly due to tight credit,while larger jet purchases are more likely to beself-financed,he said. Edward Jones analystChristian Mayes also cited as a reason a glut of smaller planes that were manufactured.

Industry details drawing distinctions betweenbusiness purchases and those by the rich arenot available. However, one reason financing isnot as big of a challenge for large jets is that“some big celebrities still buy multimillion-dollar jets no matter what because they want to getfrom point A to B as fast as possible,” Mayes said.

Steve Varsano, founder of The Jet Business, aLondon-based seller of private planes, crediteda boost in international business travel.Business planes also are increasingly used by mid-level managers, not just chief executives, he said. As airport security require-ments snarl air travel, businesses save moneyby cutting travel time with private jets availableon demand, he said.

“It’s a time machine,” Varsano said. “You’re running a multibillion-dollar company,and time is money.”

Further cementing its position as Europe’sleading international rotorcraft exhibition andconference, Helitech International will takeplace in the major international hub ofAmsterdam for the 2014 edition. AmsterdamRAI, the city’s first class exhibition centre, willplay host to the event, run in association withthe European Helicopter Association (EHA),from 14-16 October.

The global footprint of Helitech International2014 will include exhibitors from countries suchas Australia, New Zealand, USA and thirteenEuropean nations. Despite the series of strategicenhancements that have taken place since 2013,the essence of the show remains the same, withtraditional strengths still to the fore. HelitechInternational has the capacity to hold demonstra-tion flights from the venue during the show andexhibitors wishing to demonstrate their aircraft tocustomers will be able to utilise a temporary heliport conveniently located behind the exhibition hall.

€1m order placed at Heli Expo Sywell

The order for almost €1m Euro was placed duringHeli UK Expo at Sywell earlier this month whereHelicentre Aviation and Cotswold Helicopter Centrewere exhibiting. Both companies are absolutelythrilled with Helicentre Aviation’s decision to furtherexpand the fleet, which will also make the UK distributor the largest Guimbal distributor globally.

Helicentre Aviation Academy have become a centreof excellence for the Cabri G2, which is predomi-nately used by the company for professional pilottraining with each aircraft flying consistently inexcess of 120 hours per month. Between their training, utility and charter operations the companyis expected to fly over 9,000 hours this year fromtheir base at Leicester Airport.
