WHAT IS FameLab?

• A competition meant to identify and develop the talent in communicating scientific ideas to a large audience, in an accessible, open and interactive way. • An initiative of the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK• Since 2007 the contest has gone in nine countries in South-East Europe (including Romania) through the British Council network• In 2011, FameLab will be organised simultaneously by the British Council in number of 18 countries all over across the world.

WHAT ARE THE AIMS OF FameLab? Encourage young scientists to inspire and excite public imagination with a vision of science in the 21st century. Improve teaching of Sciences in schools and increase the number of students in Sciences

• FameLab is searching for the new faces of Science Communication who will be able to develop their ideas and presentation skills for a TV audience.

• The model is familiar from TV programmes like Pop Idol and Mega Star.

• Participants have just 3 minutes to prove themselves to a panel of expert judges, and the talk should be entertaining and original, scientifically accurate but also engaging to a non-scientific audience.

HOW DOES FameLab RUN? •Communication campaign for registration•On-line registration to the competition•Preliminary selections taking place in regions of Romania (Iasi, Cluj and Bucharest)•Training delivered to finalists by a UK team made of specialists in interviews, science communication and using theatre techniques during a presentation or in front of a TV camera•Grand Final – hundreds of high school students in the audience & broadcasted on TVR •Romanian winner to compete along with winners of all the countries participating to the FameLab International competition at the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK

FameLab in Romania 2007 & 2009 – KEY FIGURES

30 FameLab finalists created a network engaged in promoting science and technology to the young people in schools and universities at a national and international level via the activities of the British Council’s “Beautiful Science” project

Over 10 articles in the national press plus 6 TV transmissions

Over 6 mil. people reached through communication

About 300 young researchers, university teachers, and students made presentations on various science and technology subjects to a total audience of more than 2,000 young people (mostly students in secondary and higher education) in a series of 12 events (regional selections in Iasi, Cluj and Bucharest) and national finals.

In 2008 and 2009, the Romanian winners took part in finals of FameLab International at Cheltenham, UK
