History & Development

• In 1989, Geotech Limited became aware of an increasing need for a portable instrument which could reliably analyse landfill gas.

• The existing methods were unsuitable because....– Inaccurate CO2 readings.– They require high O2 levels– The sensors are easily poisoned

• Infra-red is ideally suited to analysing landfill gas.

Development of GA90

• In 1989 Geotech realised a market opportunity for low cost portable analyser.

• Site operators and licensers contacted - specification for an “ideal readout” was developed.

• Launch of the first portable infra-red gas analyser – the GA90.


Evolution of the Landfill Gas Analyser

1994

The GA94 was the first Intrinsically Safe Gas Analyser.

1999

The GEM2000 5 gas analyser was launched with addition of flow and power. Increased storage and download capabilities


GA/GEM2000 Range Gas Analyser

2003 ATEX GA2000/GEM2000 range extended to GA2000 Plus & GEM2000 Plus.

- Hydrogen Compensated CO reading.

2007 Re-engineered to incorporate new features as requested by our customers.

2009 MCERTS, GPS feature, event log.

Cross-Gas Effects (CO & H2S Cells)

• Measurements of CO are important to landfill management.

• Normal measurements of CO can be affected by two other gases that can be found in landfill gas (H2 and H2S).

• To reduce the effect of hydrogen, the GEM2000 plus analyser compensates for up to 1% H2.

• To remove H2S from the gas sample a H2S filter can be used in the sample line.

• The H2S sensor can be affected by CO in the sample.


User Calibration - Practical

Your turn to have a go!

1) GA calibration menu

2) Set up target gases

3) Use check gas canister and pressure regulator

4) Run gas through the analyser

5) Check the analyser readings match the gas canister concentrations


• Storing the Analyser– The analyser should be stored in a normal office/room environment.

• Charging the Analyser– The analyser should generally be fully charged and not stopped during

the charging process.– A full charge will take approximately two hours.

• Memory– The analyser’s memory is volatile and so the rule is “don’t store,

transfer”– Sudden shocks, levels of electromagnetic interference or static

discharge may cause memory corruption or loss. • If this occurs clear the memory and reset the factory settings or do

a cold start
