WUZZLE: COMMUNICATION

In order to get the best results during your SAM daily meeting, it is important for you to “speak up” when your principal “kicks around an idea”. Give him or her some “feedback”; who knows, your thoughts many become the “highpoint of the session”. So become an “extrovert”! Who cares whether you guide them in “broken English”. It is the instructional that matters.

BIG ROCKS: THE STORY ABOUT PRIORITIES

Page 8: GA SAM Conference Thursday, July 9, 2015 THE INSTRUCTIONAL SAM Dr. Kendra Washington-Bass, State SAM Coordinator

Identify the top three time takers for your principal.

Something … he or she enjoys doing, she or she is good at, and is important to the school.

THE TOP THREE

But … What takes up most of the

time?

How much time?

How long has this been a “priority” for him or her?

THE TOP THREE

1. What is my role as a SAM?2. Why am I am SAM?3. How am I supporting my principal?4. Why am I supporting him/her this way?5. How do I know my principal is successful?6. How does my principal know that I am

successful?

SETTING THE STAGE: WHAT IS YOUR STAKE?

Page 11: GA SAM Conference Thursday, July 9, 2015 THE INSTRUCTIONAL SAM Dr. Kendra Washington-Bass, State SAM Coordinator

As a SAM you can influence your principal’s instructional leadership through instructional conversations.

Identify a “Big Rock”. Clarify the task. Determine if this is a “hot target” area. Determine future impact/implications. Examine how you can influence/support the goal. Describe the ideal outcome. Commit to the action.

BIG ROCK PROTOCOL

Think-Pair-ShareThink about the following questions:

Identify an “aha” moment. What will you take away from today’s session? What can you do immediately to support your

principal at the start of the new year?

NEXT STEPS/REFLECTION

Sometimes the simplest philosophy, applied to our schools, can help us see things in a new way. Let’s see how many insights that we can come up with that relate one of these cowboy funny; to an application for our work environments.

WORDS TO PONDER

Page 14: GA SAM Conference Thursday, July 9, 2015 THE INSTRUCTIONAL SAM Dr. Kendra Washington-Bass, State SAM Coordinator

Don’t squat with yer spurs on. Don't interfere with something that ain't botherin' you

none. The easiest way to eat crow is while it's still warm. The

colder it gets, the harder it is to swaller. If you fi nd yourself in a hole, the fi rst thing to do is stop

diggin'. If it don't seem like it's worth the eff ort, it probably

ain't. The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to

deal with watches you shave his face in the mirror every morning.

Keep skunks and bankers and lawyers at a distance. Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight, and bull-

strong. Words that soak into your ears are whispered...not

yelled. Meanness don't jes' happen overnight. Forgive your enemies. It messes up their heads. It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge. You cannot unsay a cruel word. Every path has a few puddles. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. The best sermons are lived, not preached.

THANKS FOR ALL THAT YOU DO TO SUPPORT OUR SCHOOLS AND

STUDENTS!
