1 Dongdaemun History & Culture Park

Design : Zaha Hadid & Samoo Architects & Engineers

Expected completion date : July 2012

Size : 85,320 sq.m of gross floor area (including underground Culture Square)

Major facilities : Dongdaemun History Museum, Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial

Museum, Relics Exhibition Halls 1 & 2, Event Hall, Design Gallery, Seoul Fortress.

    Overview

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced in 2007 a plan to build the

Dongdaemun Design Plaza and a park on the site of the Dongdaemun Sports

Complex. What the officials had in mind at the time was a simple park, but they had

to change their plans soon after. A considerable number of cultural relics related to

Seouls history were recovered during the demolition of the old sports facility. Under

the supervision of architect Zaha Hadid, the designer of the DDP, the city decided tocreate a history and culture park.

The 142m-long walls surrounding Dongdaemun, one of the four main gates of the

capital of the Joseon Dynasty, were restored to their original shapes. The site of an

old military camp, discovered beneath old baseball and soccer fields, has also been

recovered. Some 1,000 retrieved artifacts, including white porcelains and pieces of

buncheong, are now on display at the newly built Dongdaemun History Museum. The

restoration process was captured in a 3D film that can be viewed at Dongdaemun

History Museum and Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial Museum.

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza is now under construction and will have four floors

above ground and three underground. The plaza will exclusively serve the fashion and

design industry and be equipped with all the major facilities, such as exhibition rooms

and educational and PR facilities. When it is completed in 2012, the Dongdaemun

area will be reborn as a landmark in Seoul, where history and the future co-exist.

2 Design Seoul Street in Samcheong-dong

Size : 1,600m in length, 15m in width

Project description : Based on residents opinions, a total of 89 signboards have

been installed or improved on the streets of Samcheong-dong, the embodiment of

a perfect marriage between tradition and modernity.

    Overview

    Design Streets

Based on its Design Seoul guidelines completed in December 2008, the Seoul

Metropolitan Government is redesigning the major streets of the city. The new street

designs are based on the concept of harmony and integrity. The streets in Seoul often

lack a sense of harmony since many street facilities, such as traffic signs and benches,

were built simply for their functionality and not in consideration of their surrounding

    environments.

Under the improvement project, the city redesigned signboards, benches, street

lights, street signs and even sidewalks with an integrated design concept to better

harmonize them with their surroundings. The projects four main strategies are

to simplify, to adopt a consistent design, to reflect citizens ideas and to develop

    sustainable design concepts.

A total of 18 streets in Seoul, including the districts around Cheonho-dong

intersection in southeastern Seoul and the Gangnam intersection in southern Seoul,

have been turned into Streets of Design. All of the shop signs and signboards and

various street facilities there were reorganized and redesigned under these new

    design criteria.

Walking along the high walls of Gyeongbokgung with the National Folk Museum to

the north and the skyscrapers near Gwanghwamun to the rear, one may feel as if he

or she is looking for a hidden secret garden in the heart of a metropolitan city. Across

from the Gyeongbokgung walls, a street lined with art galleries is located. At the end

of the street is a three-way intersection, where Samcheong-dong starts. Following a

book caf at one corner, countless cafs and small galleries can be found along the

street. The myriad back alleys are dotted with shops selling beautiful craftwork and

    fashion items.

    Samcheong-dong

Samcheong-dongs charm lies in its clash of modern and traditional, and international

and Korean elements. Wine bars and pasta restaurants are often housed in traditional

Korean-style buildings, hanok, while the restaurants in modern western-styled

buildings sell traditional food. The narrow alleys behind the main street fill with jazz

    tunes on a nightly basis.

Around the restaurants are many beverage shops, such as a tea house decorated

with pottery. There are also places for take-out coffee and other beverages. Located

in the heart of Seoul and still preserving its old elements, the area ironically has

become one of the most exotic places in the capital. During the weekend, the roads

in Samcheong-dong bustle with people busily clicking away on the camera to capture

the exotic and beautiful street scenes.

    Overview

    The Hangang

The Hangang, which flows across Seoul, is called the lifeline of the city. Some scholars

say that its name originates from the indigenous Korean word hangaram. Han

means big, wide or long and garam is an archaic word meaning river. Therefore,Hangang means the big and wide river. During the Joseon Dynasty, the river was also

called Gyeonggang. In some old foreign books, the river is called the Seoul River.

The Hangang, commonly called the Han River, is well-known to the world as a symbol

of Koreas fast economic growth in the 1970s. Korea achieved dramatic development

from the 1960s onwards when the nations first five-year economic development

plan was implemented. The growth transformed Korea from a country languishing in

the ashes of the Korean War (1950-53) to the worlds 13th largest economy. Foreignmedia described the economic development as the Miracle on the Hangang. The

phrase is still considered by many to describe Koreas "can-do" spirit and dynamic

    image.

    Hangang Renaissance Project

The Hangang Renaissance Project is centered on two themes: restoration and

creation. Under the project, 12 riverside parks are to be redeveloped with different

themes. As a part of the project, four parks - Banpo, Yeouido, Nanji and Ttukseom

    - were completed in September 2009. Each of these parks was redeveloped under

the themes : culture, airport, environments and leisure. In just one year, after its

reopening, they have become popular refuges for rest and leisure. What is most

noticeable about the four parks is their water-friendly design.

The Hangang Renaissance Project is aimed at transforming Seoul into a riverside city

by developing its waterfronts. To this end, the urban spaces around the Hangang will

be restructured and accessibility to the river has been improved.

Yeouido Hangang Park was reopened in September, 2009,

after major renovation that took into account the regional

characteristic of Yeouido, a political, financial and media hub

of Seoul. The park has changed into a cultural space with

sophisticated waterfront facilities for global business activities. The park draws many foreign tourists and businessmen visiting

    Yeauido as well as citizens.

    1 Yeouido Hangang Park

Piano Waterway, which is a 1/100 miniature of the Hangang

River (41.5km), is 3m wide and 415m long. The creek is

supplied with water from underground that was formed

during the construction of a subway. The bottom of thewaterway is engraved with patterns symbolizing famous

attractions along the Hangang, allowing the visitors to take a

glimpse at the river at one place.

    2 Piano Waterway

This waterway is gently sloped from the levees down to

waterfronts. Water is flowing down slowly and is shallow

enough for kids to play in. The dancing streams of a waterjetfountain and a floor fountain also please the eyes and ears of

visitors. The water running along the Piano Waterway travels

all the way to Water Light Plaza.

    3 Water Light Plaza

This building that used to be the park management office has

been changed into an observatory caf where citizens can

enjoy the fantastic views of Water Light Plaza and nearbyBamseom. Bukhansan (Mt.) and N Tower on Namsan (Mt.)

are also observed on a clear day.

This facility was created to commemorate the first Korean

pilot An Chang-nam and an old airport that used to be

located on the island. On Dec. 10, 1922, a local daily, Donga

Ilbo, sponsored the Grand Homecoming Flight show for

An. Before 50,000 spectators, he flew around Seoul onthe plane Geumgangho and presented an air show over

Yeouido. The walk connects Yeouido Park to the outside.

5 A Walk through the History of Yeouido Airport

Located between two bridges, Mapo-daegyo and Seogang-

daegyo, and facing the Hangang, this place was created

with soil and sand from a construction site in Yeouido

Hangang Park. With gentle-slope stands perfect for enjoying

performances, Festival Stand was a venue for streetcheering during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

    6 Festival Stand

This is the world's first floating stage with rotating doors

that can open and close. With a 562 sq.m stage with 200

seats indoors and 2200 outdoors, it is a riverside stage of

performing arts in perfect harmony with the landscape in

the area. Designed by Yun Chang-gi and Zhang Xiaoyi, the

structures concept is the image of the bubble rising up fromthe water. It was made floating to remain safe from flood.

Fantastic shows are presented every day by various images

of bubbles illustrated through the LEDs and water fountains.

    7 Floating Stage

Bamseom, a 273,503 sq.m islet, is a sanctuary for over

70 different species of migratory birds during winter.

Acknowledging the value of the place as a bird sanctuary,

the government designated Bamseom as an ecosystem

conservation region in 1999. The island is close to the public

and opens only for restricted occasions, to clean up after

flooding, or to feed migratory birds during winter. It was

named Bamseom because it looks like a chestnut, which is

    bam in Korean.

This is the first bridge built across the Hangang, constructed

in 1900. The railroad bridge was destroyed during the Korea

War in order to stop the advance of North Korean soldiers.

Many of the bullet holes made during the war are still

    found.

    9 Hangangcheolgyo (Railroad Bridge)

This artificial island was built in 1917 from a sand dune in the middle

of the Hangang when a bridge was constructed over it. It was

called Jungjido at the time and renamed Nodeulseom in 1995.

Nodeul literally means a stone on which herons were treading,

which referred to the area around the present Noryangjin. It will be

developed to a landmark of Seoul with an art and culture complex

in 2014. A convention hall, a concert call, an opera house andother cultural facilities will be built there.

    10 Nodeulseom (Island)

Floating Islands, inspired by the image of a flower blooming in

the Hangang, will be completed in 2011. There will be three

islands. The first island is the biggest and will be is a place for

performing arts. The second will be devoted to entertainment

and have a range of facilities for cultural experiences. The

third island will house facilities for water sports.

    11 Floating Islands

This fountain, located on Banpo-daegyo (Bridge), is the longest bridge

fountain in the world. Installed on both sides of the 570m-long bridge,

it is 1,140m long in total and registered in the Guinness Book of World

Records. The 44 underwater pumps draw up over 60 tons of water

from the Hangang per minute to supply water to the fountain, which

has 380 nozzles. It was named Moonlight Rainbow Fountain since the

LED lights installed in it create a night rainbow at night. The dancingmovements of water are synchronized to music. It is run from April

to November. The fountain has become a popular location site for

dramas and films. The number of visitors of Banpo Hangang Park has

also increased by 50 percent thanks to the fountain.

    Overview

Seoul has been the capital of Korea since 1394. Even before that, the city had served

as the capital of the Baekje Kingdom (B.C.18-660), one of the three kingdoms that

ruled Korea for about 600 years. With such a long history as the nations capital, Seoul

is full of historical sites and royal palaces. The palaces located in downtown Seoul alsoprovide Seoul citizens with havens from their busy city life.

One noticeable feature of the royal palaces is that they are all positioned in harmony

with nature. Streams were unaltered and left to flow through the palaces. These royal

residences still preserve the natural beauty of 600 years ago.

During the Joseon Dynasty, Gyeongbokgung was the main residence for the kings.

Gyeongbokgung is the oldest and the biggest of the five royal palaces in Seoul. Itsstructure reveals the highest technical level of architectural design in Northeast Asia

    from the Middle Ages.

    History

    - Registered Cultural Property No. 229 (designated on March 2, 2006)

    - The Bukchon Traditional Culture Center was opened in October 2002. The house

was originally the residence of the noble-class Min family during the last days

of the Joseon Dynasty. The house is comprised of the anchae (the main building

of a house), the bakkatchae (outer quarters), a haengrangchae (an annex), a

byeolchae (a separated building) and a sadang (a shrine). The Public Information

Hall of the center is located in the haengrangchae building.

    Overview

The traditional Korean-style house, hanok, is characterized more by the aesthetics

of architectural space than by the beauty of the house itself. In building houses, old

Koreans gave great consideration to their positioning in relation to the surrounding

environment. In order to preserve the traditional Korean architectural beauty of thecity and revive its history, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has been rehabilitating

a major cluster of hanok houses in Bukchon.

Bukchon Hanok Village was honored with the Award of Excellence in the 2009

UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation, an award

given by UNESCO in recognition of the achievement of individuals and organizations

in successfully restoring structures of heritage value in the Asia-Pacific region.

Bukchon, where the 600-year history of Seoul is preserved, is not a model villagebut a neighborhood inhabited by people. Walking through its narrow alleys, one may

    Bukchon Hanok Village

The best way to appreciate the essence and beauty of Korean-style houses, hanok,

is to visit Bukchon Hanok Village. Bukchon is not an official municipal name. The

name refers to the village lies to the north (buk in Korean) of Cheonggyecheon

and Jongno, the main streets of Seoul. It used to be a high-end residential district for

royal family members and high-ranking government officials. In the village, housesstand roof to roof, sharing walls, a sign of the warm spirit of the neighborhoods in old

    Korea.

Bukchon is located between two palaces - Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung

    - with Jongmyo (Shrine) in the middle. Houses were positioned based on Neo -

Confucian philosophy and geomancy. Bukchons narrow alleys, branching out across

the beautiful surroundings, are preserved in their original form and layout. About 920

houses are now clustered in the village, including small museums and workshops.Bukchon is the best place to glimpse back into the history of Seoul.

Nanjido in the northwestern part of Seoul used to be a beautiful small islet full of

wild flowers, such as orchids, that bloomed throughout the year. However, in 1977,

urban waste was dumped there, turning the islet into a landfill. Nanjido remained in

such a state for 15 years, becoming known for its bad odor, dust and pollution. On

the occasion of the 2002 World Cup, the islet was redeveloped as an ecological park.

Construction began in October 1999 and was completed in May 2002. The World Cup

Park is composed of five zones - Pyeonghwa (Peace), Haneul (Sky), Noeul (Sunset),Nanjicheon (Nanji stream) and Nanjicheon - and is an eco-friendly space loved by

    both Koreans and foreigners.

Pyeonghwa Park symbolizes harmony and peace and accommodates UNICEF Square,

Nanji Pond, Peace Garden, a picnic area and the Design Seoul Gallery, which traces

the developmental history of Nanjido island.

Haneul Park, located on one of the two peaks on the island, is known for its wind

power generation facilities. The 30m-high power generator produces 100kw ofelectricity from five huge vanes. The electricity is used to power the park facilities.

The gas being emitted from the buried garbage is also recycled there and then

supplied to the World Cup Stadium and to the nearby residential area.

Offering the most beautiful sunsets in Seoul, Noeul Park is a space for culture and

arts. The huge lawns in the park include sculptures and an observation deck and are

open to the public for resting and sports activities. Home to various wild animals,

such as elk, raccoons and wildcats, Noeul has become an ecological treasure.

Nanjicheon Park was formed around Nanjicheon, a branch of the Hangang (River).

The brook was heavily polluted by waste and remained abandoned for many years.

The deserted river area was converted to a park with fields of reeds. A variety of

plants now grow in the park. Various public facilities for the physically disabled,

the elderly and children, such as a playground for children, multi-purpose sporting

grounds, an artificial turf-covered soccer field and a lawn plaza, can be found in the

    Nanjicheon area.

Nanji Hangang Park is the second largest of the 13 parks along the Hangang. The park

was formed so as to preserve the natural beauty of the riverside area.

    Overview

Mapo Resources Recovery Facility located between Haneul and Noeul Park is an

advanced system serving dual purposes of reducing urban garbage and producing

alternative energy. The existing landfills in and around Seoul are expected to exceed

their capacity by 2002. Mapo Resources Recovery Facility incinerates garbage

before reclamation to reduce its volume and therefore, can extend the life of thelandfills. The facility also produces clean energy. The heat produced in the course of

incineration (850-950C) is cooled down to 200 and provided for use as energy for

    heating in nearby apartment buildings.

    Overview

    Cheonggyecheon

Cheonggyecheon is a creek flowing west to east through downtown Seoul. But in the

course of fast development of the city in the late 1950s, it was covered with concrete

for construction of roads and an elevated road. The roads played an importantrole in city transportation at the time. But safety problems with the roads were

continuously raised, while paradigms of urban development changed in a way in favor

    of restoration of urban streams.

The two-year restoration work that started in 2003, however, returned the stream to

its former glory, but in a new, modern vision. The promenades and the bottom of

the stream were covered not with concrete but with stone and clay. Its sides were

adorned with marshes, natural embankments and the habitats of birds and fish. Nowthe stream is an ecological sanctuary where migrant birds and fish visit and reside.

Cheonggyecheon has become a new landmark in Seoul and receives an average of

    100,000 visitors every day.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government in 2010 was honored with the Scroll of Honor

Special Citation by U.N. HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlement Program) in

connection with its Cheonggyecheon recovery project for a cleaner and greener

    urban environment.

    Cheonggyecheon Museum

Cheonggyecheon Museum is a place where the past, present and future of

Cheonggyecheon can be observed. It is composed of exhibition halls, a seminar room

and a small stage for performing arts. The exhibition hall features photos and other

    Overview

Seonjeongneung comprises of two royal tombs-Seonneung and Jeongneung. This

place offers tranquil and pleasant promenades for couples and office workers.

Seonjeongneung houses the burial mounds of King Seongjong (1469-1494), his wife

Queen Jeonghyeon, and King Jungjong (1506-1544) of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

Upon entering, there is a red gate with a taegeuk (yin-yang) symbol. The paths

leading to the sacrificial building are divided into two. The elevated path is for the

dead king and the lower one is for living people. In the past, memorial rites were

performed in the sacrificial building. Small sculptures on the eaves were carved in the

shape of animals such as monkeys and were believed to exorcise evil spirits.

Next to the sacrificial building, there is a pavilion and a tombstone which is obviouslythe tomb of the king. Sculptures of sheep and tigers surround the tomb and are

guardians of the dead king. There is also a statue of a military officer bearing a sword.

In front of the tomb is an outstanding sight called the Mangjuseok, which is a pair

of stones designed to guide the dead king to his tomb. Unlike the tombs of the Kings,

the queens tomb is simple. It doesnt have any pavilions or sacrificial buildings, but is

surrounded by only stone sculptures as guardians.

Seonjeongneung has a lush forest, and benches on the promenade provide an ideal

place to relax. There are numerous small hills with clusters of trees that create a

border between the mystery and serenity of the royal tombs and the hustle and bustle

    Overview

The district around Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong, used to be a quiet residential area with

only a few galleries and shops that sold expensive imported clothing. It was in the

early 1980s when art galleries first began to nestle here one by one, moving from

Insa-dong in downtown Seoul. These galleries helped to transform the road into

a major cultural street. The 700m-long road and back alleys are now dotted withcountless trendy shops, galleries, restaurants and cafs.

The name Garosu-gil means a tree-lined street in Korean. Every fall, when the

gingko trees along the street turn to yellow, various road festivals take place,

including a dance festival, street fashion shows, percussion performances and road

    exhibitions.

The stylish galleries and open cafs here are quite different from those in Apgujeong-

dong or Cheongdam-dong, other high-end districts in Seoul. Many of the clothing

stores here sell only unique and upscale designs. Garosu-gil may remind visitors of

    Overview

Seoul Fortress was built 600 years ago during the Joseon Dynasty. At the beginning

of the dynasty, the founder King Taejo built a palace and a royal shrine with the

intention of moving the capital from Gaeseong to Seoul. In the fourth year of his

reign, he established an agency for city fortress construction and built an earth and

Seoul Fortress is 18,627m in total length with four large gates and four small gates.

The four big gates were Heunginjimun (in the east), Donuimun (in the west),

Sungryemun (in the south), and Sukjeongmun (in the north). The four small gates

The fortress was greatly refurbished in 1422, the fourth year of King Sejong. All of
