PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK
THE PROPHET MOTIVE
When G-d instructs Moshe to go to the Jewish People, Moshe expresses concern that they
would not believe that G-d had actually appeared to him. As a result, G-d arms Moshe with three won-
ders that he would perform for the Jews in order to prove his authenticity. The Talmud (TB Shabbos
97a) points out that the wonders Moshe was given to use include the snake and leprosy, both associ-
ated with Lashon Hara (slander). Moshe deserved this association because he had wrongfully stated that
the Jewish People would not trust him without the wonders to prove it. In truth however it would
seem that the Jewish People should not have believed Moshe without the performance of wonders.
When the Torah (Devarim 13:2; see also Rambam Yesodei HaTorah end of chapter 7) discusses the
phenomenon of prophesy, it speaks of the prophet demonstrating his authenticity by performing won-
ders. If the performance of wonders is indeed the Torah's proof standard for generations, why is
Moshe wrong for assuming that the Jewish People would expect that of him??
HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR
GUESTS & BRACHOS
The Torah forbids placing a stumbling block in front of the blind. The Sages understood this
prohibition to include any act that may encourage or assist someone in the performance of any kind of
wrongdoing. As such, the Shulchan Aruch (OC 169:1-2) rules that one must not give bread to someone
who will not wash their hands, nor food to someone who will not make Brachos. This would of course
compel the host of not-yet-observant family or friends to remind and instruct the guests about how to
properly wash and make Brachos. Yet in many situations this may offend a guest, or make them very
uncomfortable. Contemporary authorities (see Piskei Teshuvos 169:3) rule that in such situations one
should proceed to offer food to guests without Halachic instructions, with the goal of warming them up
to Torah and observance. As such the offering of food will not be encouraging wrongdoing, but very
much the opposite. Indeed sharing a warm and comfortable meal together often helps bridge the gap
between family or friends divided by levels of observance. It may be advisable in certain such situations
to make Brachos aloud, which would on some level include the listener in the Brachos.
