DESCRIPTION

It was an Australian company which took delivery in 1954 of what were to be some of the last coal-fired vessels, noteworthy for their fully mechanical coal handling and stoker system. It is therefore significant that, nearly thirty years later, and amid growing interest in coal firing in the last couple of years, it is an Australian company, that is the first shipowner to again order new coal-fired steam turbine propelled vessels. These two new vessels of 75,750 tonnes deadweight, to be built by the Italian shipbuilder, Italcantieri S.p.A., will be engaged in the Australian coastal trade.
