What is a Risk Analysis:“A systematic process whereby supervisors, managers and staff identify,

assess and control hazards that may affect people at the place of work”

implementation of workplace safety.”

This Risk Assessment form is a generic form and may not cover all the Risk’s associated with your project.

5 Classifications of Hazards:1. Physical – heat, light, noise, electrical, etc.2. Chemical – acids, metals, gases, etc.3. Biological – susceptibility to diseases4. Mechanical – manual handling, machinery, etc.5. Psychosocial – violence, harassment, stress, etc.

In general there are four ways of dealing with hazards:

1. Elimination,2. Change equipment or materials,3. Change work methods, and4. Use personnel protective equipment (PPE).

These four ways are based on the hierarchy of controls provided for by the OHS Regulations.

The controls adopted should always be the highest level that can be reasonably attained.

Risk Analysis

There are 5 steps to performing a successful Risk Assessment:

1. Identifying the Hazards,

2. Assess the Risk,

3. Documenting,

4. Controlling, and

5. Ongoing monitoring.

There are many ‘tools’ available to help with this process, the one most generally used is WorkCover’s Hazpak.

Risk Assessment is a very judgmental procedure.

What you consider ‘safe’ may be considered ‘unsafe’ by others

General rules of OH&S:1. don’t assume anything.2. There is no such thing as

common sense.

some general advice ….

Take sometime to develop a project plan and discuss this with your supervisor.

Break the project and individual tasks into manageable parts.

Make sure you test each new addition to your project thoroughly.

Don’t test everything at once.
