Dear Friends,We are so pleased to provide this report to you in this, our 65th year of service to the children, youth and families of our community. We know that Friends of Youth holds a special place in your heart and we’d like to personally thank you for being on our team for youth. Whether you’ve been a client, a staff member, a donor, a volunteer, or a funder, you have been a part of this year’s successes. Thank you!

Here are a few highlights of the year just ending:

New ProgrammingThis year we launched a new education program in partnership with King County, Seattle Education Access, and Lake Washington Technical College. The Eastside Reengagement Center works with youth experiencing homelessness and crisis to increase graduation, GED completion and college enrollment.

Strengthening StaffThe improving job market has made it more challenging to recruit hourly staff, key members of our team. In August, we hired a new HR professional to support the recruitment and hiring of staff and we are committed to steadily increasing the hourly wages for these staff members, with a goal to reach $15/hour by 2018.

New ChallengesThe Opioid epidemic continues to negatively impact young lives throughout our community. Our Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Counseling staff are working tirelessly to respond to the ongoing crisis. We now have overdose kits available at all of our sites to ensure that we can respond to an overdose emergency.

As a foster care provider for the entirety of our 65 year history, we are concerned by the dearth of licensed foster homes available to children in need of care. We recruit and license foster parents throughout the region and we are working with our partners, funders and foster parents to increase the number of caring, loving homes available to children.

Homelessness continues to increase in our region. This year we embarked on a new diversion project, working to connect youth with the resources they need to avoid entering the housing system. New funding from King County helped us to increase counseling and staff support for young people struggling with significant barriers to housing success.

We are privileged to have had the opportunity to assist over 6,500 young people this year, each one unique and valuable with so much potential and promise. We celebrate our youth, and the hard work they have accomplished to create happy, healthy and independent lives. Your support of our mission gives them this opportunity, and we are grateful for your gifts of time, talent and treasure. Together, we are achieving our vision of a world where every young person has every opportunity to succeed.

We are privileged to have had the opportunity to assist over 6,500 young people this year, each one unique and valuable with so much potential and promise.

Foster Care 33 90% of youth in our foster homes felt safe and were happy with their placement.

New Roads Extended Foster Care 22Refugee youth from eleven different countries learned the life skills they need to succeed. Every youth was enrolled in school full-time.

Griffin Home 4895% of youth in our residential homes reported that they increased their trust in adults and learned new coping skills.

Youth Haven 115Youth Haven provided 3,370 bednights to foster youth and homeless kids from more than 35 different communities.

HOMELESS YOUTH SERVICES 2,199

Street Outreach 1,308 87% of youth in our Outreach case management services achieved housing.

The Landing Shelter 214The Landing provided 6,134 bednights to young adults experiencing homelessness, giving them a safe and supportive alternative to the streets.

Drop In 223Our Drop-In program distributed over 12,000 food packets and 748 articles of clothing to young people in need of support.

New Ground Transitional Living 28486% of the young people in our transitional housing ‘graduated’ to a safe, stable place of their own.

Rapid Rehousing 36All youth who secured permanent housing through this program were able to maintain it at program end.

Education 47This new program has helped 47 youth return to a steady educational program and work toward their GED.

Employment 87 83% of our young people increased their job-readiness skills.

Specialized Client Support 128Five dedicated case managers provided an extra layer of support for youth who have experienced sexual assault, exploitation, family conflict or crisis.

YOUTH AND FAMILY SERVICES 3,611

Mental Health Counseling 64182% of youth who concluded one-on-one counseling resolved or significantly improved coping strategies to deal with the issues that brought them to our offices.

School Based Prevention Programs 38687% of youth in our Check & Connect program improved their study habits and ability to succeed in school.

Education and Outreach 2,372Youth in our three school district communities learned from our team how to be mentally healthy and how substance use can impact their bodies and lives.

Substance Use Disorder 21275% of youth who completed substance use disorder counseling made significant progress toward their goals.

HEALTHY START 484

Healthy Start* 48498% of families served increased their healthy, effective parenting skills, and 96% strengthened their nurturing and attachment behaviors.

Thanks to YOU We Invest in Prevention

Healthy Start works to end the cycle of child abuse and

neglect in our communities. We employ an evidence-based

model to strengthen and support parents. Our work alters

the trajectory of at-risk families by offering support for two

generations, both parent and child. In FY 2016 98% of our

Healthy Start parents strengthened their parenting skills.

learn the skills they need to exit homelessness, achieve

self-sufficiency and create stable, loving futures for themselves

and their children. Housing is a crucial component of this

journey. In FY2016 over 86% of our young families exited

our transitional housing to safe, stable housing.

Homeless high school students in the state of

Washington have dropout rates (31.3%) almost as

high as their graduation rates (46%). While we work

to end youth homelessness, we are also working to

increase the academic achievement of those who

are experiencing homelessness in our community.

Our recently opened Eastside Reengagement

Center supports disconnected youth in completing

their education by helping students address barriers

to academic and vocational success as they

work toward earning their GED and planning for

additional education.

In FY2016 47 young people enrolled in our

program and restarted their educational journey.

Thanks to YOU Young People Succeed Only twenty-two years old, Tina told staff during her first night at the Landing that she was overwhelmed and didn’t have a lot of hope. She enrolled in case management and discussed her goals with shelter staff. She was determined to get a good job and housing.

In less than a month of staying at shelter, Tina found a steady job that she enjoyed. The leadership qualities she showed while in shelter opened the door to the Landing’s leadership development program, Step Up.

More determined than ever, Tina began working with Friends of Youth’s Rapid Re-Housing Case Manager to pursue permanent housing. She saved money from her job, often waking up at 4 A.M. to catch the bus for work. Within weeks of starting her new job, she was promoted to supervisor and received a raise. With help from Friends of Youth’s Rapid Re-Housing Program, Tina and a good friend moved into their own apartment.

On her last night at shelter—having stayed for just over two months—Tina told staff that she felt overwhelmed again, but in a good way. “It all started here,” she said. “This place gave me hope.”
