MissionHabitat for Humanity of Orange County changes lives by bringing together God’s people and resources to help families in need build and own quality affordable homes in safe and supportive communities.

VisionEveryone in Orange County has a decent place to live.

At the end of this year, I will be retiring as the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity in Orange County. For 26 years, I’ve had the great privilege of leading an organization that I love; serving a cause that nourishes my soul and speaks to my heart. I will be leaving an organization that is strong and respected in the community. I will be leaving an organization that is poised to take on new and exciting challenges that will expand and deepen our impact on the affordable housing crisis in our community. I feel really good about that.

The Chapel Hill Herald - January 15,1993

In Partnership,

Susan LevyExecutive Director

I have dedicated my career to Habitat and to affordable housing because I wholeheartedly believe that home is the cornerstone that provides the opportunity for a better life. Homeownership provides the stability and security that enables families to grow into thriving members of our community. I also believe that for a community to prosper there must be a place for all who want to live there. To me and to Habitat, inclusiveness is not a buzzword. It is absolutely necessary for the vitality and sustainability of our community. For our community to be a truly welcoming and diverse place means we all have to work together to provide affordable housing. We have been doing that for the past 35 years, but there is so much more to be done!

Habitat has been and will continue to be forward looking, innovative, and strategic as we address affordable housing solutions. The senior population is growing quickly in Orange County, and for many of our elders, having a safe and affordable place to live is one of the biggest challenges they face. I am excited to announce that Habitat is addressing this critical need. Crescent Magnolia, the first ever Habitat housing development for seniors, began construction in fall 2018 and will feature 24 townhomes. The ADA compliant, energy efficient units are designed to allow seniors to live at home safely, independently, and comfortably at a cost they can afford.

After 26 years at Habitat and nearly 40 years in the affordable housing field, I have to admit I have sometimes felt discouraged. Far too many families and individuals still struggle right here in Orange County to secure that most basic of human rights—decent shelter. But when I talk to Habitat homeowners, to volunteers, to donors all of—whose lives have been positively changed by their connection to Habitat, I feel reenergized and hopeful. I know that we are making a difference. With persistence, focus, passion, and compassion we are slowly but surely creating a more just and equitable community here in Orange County. I am counting on all of you to continue this vital work in the years to come.

In Febuary, Habitat for Humanity International CEO Jonathan Reckford visited to

celebrate the groundbreaking of our current build on McMasters

Street in the Northside Neighborhood of Chapel Hill.

This event also celebrated major donors from the Yeowell

Challenge, which raised over $100,000 this past year.

Faith partnerships make up a large part of site volunteers and

funds raised. Between three different partnerships, over 20 faith organizations raised $135,000 in funds in Orange

County this fiscal year.

The UNC-Chapel Hill Habitat for Humanity club had

a record breaking year of fundraising over $50,000 for our

affiliate through events like Mixed Concrete Art Show, Carolina

Blueprint, and a matching grant from State Farm.

For the first time, Youth United, the high school

affiliated Habitat club, sent a group to Habitat Guatemala for a week to work with Global Village. Our affiliate sent 34 people through

two trips to Guatemala in the past year to move our impact beyond

Orange County.

Newfangled is just one of the many organizations that sponsor a team build and volunteer on the job site. This year, Habitat raised

$22,325 through team builds.

In addition to swinging a hammer, Bert also volunteered by leading our Construction Committee for 10 years, until 2010. In 2003, Bert was instrumental in making an important design change to local Habitat homes. Wanting to improve the already high safety standards, he worked with State and Town officials to install sprinkler systems in every Habitat home built in Orange County. In 2016, the Chapel Hill Fire Department honored Bert with a ceremony celebrating the installation of the 150th sprinkler system in a Habitat home.

When Bert passed away, his wife of 64 years, Mary Lou, suggested that friends and family could honor his life by giving to Habitat in his memory. Their generosity will help to ensure that each and every Habitat home will continue to be protected by a sprinkler system, as Bert envisioned. We are grateful to the Liverance family and other supporters who choose to help build safe, affordable homes.

in memoriam: Bert LiveranceBert Liverance, a very special Habitat volunteer, passed away on April 25, 2018. He first became involved with Habitat while serving as a member of the vestry at Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church following his retirement. Bert began volunteering weekly and joined the Wednesday Crew in 1996, which he served on for over 14 years.

Bert’s favorite task on the construction site was framing walls. He loved how quickly the houses would take shape. He would arrive in the morning to a bare plywood floor, but by the end of the day, after walls had been raised, he could already picture the family moving in and enjoying their new home.

On December 22, 1994, eight days after her birthday and three days before Christmas, Mona Daniels received the best gift of all: a letter stating that she was approved for Habitat’s homeownership program. “I told my kids by drawing a picture of a house and putting that under the tree. It was a good Christmas,” said Mona.

Construction on Mona’s home began in October of 1995 and was completed in June of 1996. On June 26, after just four hours of moving, she could officially call the Chestnut Oaks neighborhood in Chapel Hill her home. “My dream was to own a home before all of my children graduated high school. Thanks to Habitat, I had my own home before my first even went to high school.”

Mona still keeps two photo albums documenting her Habitat journey. Included are everything from pictures of the original wooded lots she got to choose from, to snapshots of her children playing in their new home with moving boxes still in the background. Since she first moved in, Mona’s four children have graduated from high school and then from college, with three going on to earn advanced degrees. She’s beaten breast cancer, and hosted countless holiday dinners and summer cookouts at her home.

After 20 years in her home, Mona paid off her mortgage in June of 2016. With that milestone behind her, she’s been taking on projects to give her home a facelift, like replacing furniture, cabinets, doors, and landscaping. She’s excited to make improvements that will allow her to continue to enjoy her home for many years to come.
