Dear Teachers, Welcome to the 2013 ESF Secondary Teachers’ Conference! This is our opportunity to talk about our schools with our colleagues, to demonstrate our enormous talents and our vision for the future. This day is all about looking forward: into the lesson next week, the unit planner next term, the teacher you will have developed into next year. It is about looking to the future. There are so many people to thank for the realisation of this day: to the hundreds of talented and dedicated teachers offering to share what they do best-‐‑ including our Primary colleagues and Education team; to the CPD VP network and Curriculum Group Leaders who helped drive this right from the beginning; to Renaissance College for their generous offer of this venue-‐‑ an amazing place to spend the day; and to each and every person I spoke to throughout the year who encouraged this idea of a conference style day. The day will commence at 8:30 with our Welcome and Keynote Address and conclude after a Plenary session at 3:45.
There will be a number of publishers selling educational books on the day. They include:
Sage/ Corwin/ Aromix Publishers Independent Thinking Limited Hong Kong Bookstore
Sessions are organised into five broad strands:
Leading Learning Enterprise Wellbeing
Learning Technology Learning and Teaching
Each session has a link to the Teachers Capability framework or the Leadership Capability framework, which provides more information about the focus of the sessions and its aims. Have a great day! Samantha Rodgers – Secondary Learning and Teaching Adviser

The Value of Breaking the Mould
Anyone thinking about provoking change
L 2.10 Leads positive change
If change requires people to do things differently, how do we put people in a situation to allow themselves to do that? Along with the need to want to change is the need to be able to do it. The wanting comes from our values, and the need to go back to shared values to share the understanding. However the ability to change comes from the structures, which are not necessarily the ones you might at first glance expect. The presenter will use examples from two schools to show how breaking a mould can make the patterns reset in a different way. He will explain the problems of target oriented change agendas, and the need to trust your staff and have faith that, like the sponge passed through the sieve, things can reform in positive ways once the old mould is broken.

Investing for teachers: building wealth slowly (and effectively)
All teachers T3.2 Contributes to ESF and the wider community. L 1.5 Models lifelong learning
Let’s face it, the MPF is not a viable way to save for retirement. Fund fees hover at the 1.5% mark (this means that on a 5% annual return you pay the fund manager almost 1/3 of your profits). Add to that the built-‐‑in complexity of the finance industry and it’s easy to see why many people simply bury their heads in the sand or hand over their money to someone else to manage. However, you don’t have to! This session will provide an overview for a simple investment plan that takes very little time to set up and manage, keeps costs low and is based on the best academic research in Finance. The last part of the session will be dedicated to questions and answers.

For IB teachers who do not teach ToK
T1.2 Teachers engage in ongoing professional learning and apply it to improve their teaching practices; T2.1 Identify the most important teaching strategies to address students’ needs, diversity and multiple perspectives; T2.2 Implements effective assessment
Just as in Wonderland, Alice found nothing could be taken for granted, so in ‘TOKland’, everything is under question. This workshop is an opportunity to learn more about how to 'ʹToKify'ʹ their delivery by getting to grips with the key ToK criteria, to ease the assessment process and to encourage critical thinking. Outcomes will include a brief snapshot of what ToK is including an exploration of 'ʹKnowing Questions'ʹ, Areas of Knowing 'ʹ and 'ʹWays of Knowing'ʹ and working through some case studies, and adding ToK moments to your own lessons. You will leave with an appreciation of the extent you can rely on your subject to get to the ‘truth’ about ‘anything’.

Be a Brain Changer: Integrating the Science and Art of Education
All teachers T1.2 Develops self as teacher
Brain-‐‑based learning theory is based on the structure and function of the brain. As long as the brain is not prohibited from fulfilling its normal processes, learning will occur. Teaching without an awareness of how the brain learns is like designing a glove with no sense of what a hand looks like–its shape, how it moves. If classrooms are to be places of learning, then the organ of learning, the brain, must be understood and accommodated. Participates will leave the session knowing more about brain-‐‑ friendly strategies.

This session will demonstrate how teenage chat forums can be emulated to help improve critical thinking both in and outside the classroom. No longer will debates be limited to your classroom, they can now explode over space and time. By utilising a “digital native’s” use of technology you can reach out to students and empower them to share and critique each others’ ideas on a global forum. The session will also consider how your workload can be sustainably reduced by giving targeted feedback and utilising your students as coaches and specialists in their field of excellence. Drawing on the work of Alan November and real life examples from Island School, the session will demonstrate the power of forums and how you can shift the axis of control to your students and enable them to go beyond the skills set and knowledge of their teacher. The course will also suggest how the forums can form a digital legacy of your student’s learning that can be accessed by future lifelong learners.

Defining Digital Literacy is complicated in that it presents as knowledge, skills and behaviours. The context and exposure that students have to digital literacy is varied and students and teachers are frequently addressing aspects of the subject in and out of the curriculum. This workshop will look at a how schools can potentially address different aspects of digital literacy using a progressive skills approach. We will look at defining what some of the key knowledge domains are and look at how recognising, defining and articulating key skills can hopefully lead to an impact on student behaviours. For IB teachers who do not teach ToK
T1.2 Teachers engage in ongoing professional learning T2.1 Identify teaching strategies to address students’ needs, diversity and multiple perspectives. T2.2 Implements effective assessment

Maths and English presenting together on the same topic? Now that is critical thinking in action! What is critical thinking exactly? Why do students benefit from developing and using skills in this area? How easy is it to incorporate and use this approach, whatever you teach? These burning questions answered, as well as demonstrating creative, practical ideas and activities that you can take away, adapt and use. We will offer practical exercises and ideas to develop student critical thinking skills, promote understanding of the connection (both logical and creative) between ideas, identify, construct and evaluate arguments, detect inconsistencies and common mistakes in reasoning, solve problems systematically and reflect on their own practice, beliefs and values.
