The Challenge

Growth in world trade continually increasesfaster than international production. Globalcontainer traffic develops with exceptional andsustainable growth rates. The result: containerlogistics facilities must increase in quantity andefficiency to meet future demand.

Container handling volume is predicted to doublein the German seaports over the next 10 years.Capacities of container ships increase, hencethe demand of efficiency and performance ofseaports grows. They have to be accessible formega carriers with draughts over 16 meters anda capacity of over 12,000 TEU regardless of tidalconstraints.

Short access from the open sea, an ideal locationwith efficient hinterland road and rail connectionare the advantages of the JadeWeserPort.

Booming expansion in global container handlingvolume and ever increasing size of containerships demand an exceptional increase in thecapacity and performance of the world’s seaports.

The ProjectThe Response

The deep sea container terminal in Wilhelms-haven – JadeWeserPort – will compliment existingfacilities of the major German Seaports. Germany’spostion as a leading trading nation depends onefficient high capacity seaports. The intensifyingof the trade relations with East Europe underlinesthe importance of JadeWeserPort to the wholeof Europe.

The realization of the JadeWeserPort from pre-paration and planning to construction and ope-ration is one of the most important investmentprojects in Germany. e 950 million are beinginvested in the infra- and suprastructure ofJadeWeserPort. The suprastructure alone requiresan investment of e 350 million which will beraised by the terminal operator, Eurogate Con-tainer Terminal Wilhelmshaven GmbH & Co. KG.

Conveniently located on the German Bight,Wilhelmshaven is the solution to future trans-port and logistics requirements. The new„Wilhelm Kaisen”-Terminal in Bremerhavenwill reach ultimate capacity in the foreseeablefuture. JadeWeserPort will then be ready tooffer an additional premium service for jumbocontainer ships.

Seaward advantages are an 18 meters deep navi-gational channel, short access from the opensea of only 23 nautical miles and the large Jadearea. Mega container ships like the 400m long„Emma Maersk” which can presently only accessthe container terminal Bremerhaven will beserviced without problems at the JadeWeserPort.JadeWeserPort is the perfect transshipment hubfor feeder and short sea shipping with easy linksto Scandinavia, Finland, the Baltic States, Russiaas well as Great Britain. On land, efficient con-nections to hinterland road and rail networksprovide easy access.

An approx. 170 ha logistics zone is planneddirectly adjacent to the terminal together with afreight village, a prime location for port-orientedcompanies.

The following diagram illustrates the short distances

of the container terminal Bremerhaven and Wilhelms-

haven. Existing container throughput from esta-

blished routes complement the port group’s

available range of services at both terminals.

This ensures the benefits of synergy effects for

companies within the container logistics chain.

At an ideal location and with optimal connectionsto the economic centers of Europe, Wilhelms-haven offers first-class service for container shipsof the next generation.

Construction of the deep sea container terminalon the German Bight is a project of uniqueimportance.

The Region

1957 saw further major maritime developmentswith the establishment of Germany’s largest oilterminal. Still today Wilhelmshaven remains asthe only deep sea German oil terminal and theprinciple source of Germany’s oil imports. Today’sregional economic focus remains port industry, business and trade as well as the largest Germannaval base. JadeWeserPort will secure the entireNorth West Region of Germany by creating jobsand by boosting the development of the cityinto a major international logistics hub.

The port’s economic impact is already substantialtoday: major industrial companies haveannounced huge investments in Wilhelmshaven, like E.ON Ruhrgas AG (DFTG) with plans for anLNG terminal, the chemical giant INEOS andConocoPhillips, as the owner of the Wilhelms-haven oil refining company WRG. These develop-ments all offer the prospect of many new jobs.

Wilhelmshaven and the North West Regionhave long established historical links withthe maritime industry. The JadeWeserPort willfurther develop the location into a major inter-national logistics hub.

The relatively young city of Wilhelmshaven wasfirst established as a Prussian naval port in thelate 19th Century. Construction of the originalnaval port commenced in 1853 on agreementbetween the Duchy of Oldenburg and the King-dom of Prussia. In June 1869 the port was handedto the navy adopting the name of the GermanKaiser, Wilhelm I.
