FutureHarvest Novel Management Strategies
to Increase Economic Yield and Productivity of Wild Fisheries
And Marine Scale Pilchard Fishermen’s Association and Southland Fish Supplies
Key industry members
• SRL• ACA• WAFIC• ACPF• Tasmanian seafoods
• Focus is on invertebrate fisheries
• CRC does not do stock assessment
• Critical opportunities to address inefficiences to gain > benefit from resource
• Recognition of need for managed change
• Small change → large benefit
• Focus on economic benefit
Theme Outcomes
• Fisheries management delivering maximum benefit from the resource while maintaining stocks above sustainability indicators
• Novel management strategies in place which increase economic yield from our fisheries
• The technical efficiency of our fishing fleet will be improved to respond to rising costs.
Strategies
1. Field / pilot trials of novel or alternative management systems
2. Bioeconomic modelling of specific harvest strategies that allow stakeholders to select optimal fisheries management and harvest systems
3. Manage change and promote implementation of results in fisheries management and business structures
4. Improve technical aspects and efficiency of fishing operations
5. Foster better management and a progressive and collaborative culture by educating and training CRC participants plus theme management
Status Update
• Theme business plan developed and approved by the CRC board and FRDC board
• Three projects underway (WRL, SRL, Abalone)
• Five concepts approved for development (WRL, SRL, Abalone, + general fish)
Approved project
• Factors limiting resilience and recovery of fished abalone populations (Mundy)
