• The computer's doing more work for the worker and the organization, so those in-demand individuals are having to do less, for instance in accounting, number crunching and more interpreting and presenting the results earlier in one's career” Paul McDonald, senior executive director at job-placement company Robert Half

This unit has taught me that the market for internship positions is highly competitive….students should do anything and everything they can to give them a competitive advantage – no matter how small. It also helped me understand that students have a responsibility to attain their own internship or graduate role and it will not be ‘spoon-fed’ to them –students need to be proactive if they want to become a successful applicant.Steve, 1st year

Professional Insight has played a massive role in enhancing my employability and helping me become ‘job ready’. Since the beginning of the semester the unit has helped me hunt for potential internships, develop a cover letter and resume, create a LinkedIn and Deakin Talent profile as well as assisted me in gaining a better understanding of what employees are looking for in a student.Nathan, 1st year

…already currently working full time in my desired industry, completing this unit has given me more awareness for the networking and job-searching tools Deakin offers if need (them) in the future.
Planning my career action path, what I need to complete, action and gain further experience in, really helped me know how to maximize the potential I have in my career and what other avenues are available.Allanah

CHANGING RECRUITMENT PROCESSES• Pipelining
– Recruit for information days, project challenges in 1est or 2nd
year, and then invite high performers to attend the next
event or project, leading to summer vacation and internship
roles. Graduate roles filled from this pipeline
• Networking– Attend or sponsor information days. Look for the self
motivated students who attend and informally interview.
Will often promote to pipeline
Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B
CHANGING RECRUITMENT PROCESSES• Scan bots (scanning software for resumes)
– Spelling mistakes, poor grammar, poor layout will close the door.
– Require good writing skills, ability to respond directly to the requested information (criteria)
– 75% applications do not pass this hurdle
• Online applications– As above, but fill in application on line. Specific questions
and logs the time taken to complete and if there are any varying writing styles.
– Looking for targeted and relevant responses
Deakin University CRICOS Provider Code: 00113B
CHANGING RECRUITMENT PROCESSES
• Resume applications plus interview bots
– Will use scanning software for applications but will also ask
applicants to complete an online interview of 5-10 minutes.
Interview done by an ‘interview robot’ or artificial
intelligence system.• Assessment centres
– Will assess applicants in teamwork, problem solving, critical
analysis, informal interviews over several hours.
