Who knows what the future will bring? This central question will be addressed at the Munich Satellite Navigation Summit 2015 on March 24 - 26, 2015. The organizing Institute of Space Technology and Space Applications (ISTA) of the Universität der Bundeswehr München will invite experts from all over the world to take a „glance into the crystal ball“ and to discuss the future of the PNT sector.

The conference starts on March 24, 2015 with the Exhibition Opening and Champagne Reception at 16:30 hrs, followed by the Opening Plenary Panel at 17:15 hrs. Afterwards the state reception in the famous „Residenz München“ is giving opportunities for high-level networking with experts from industry, science and government.

The technical program of the Munich Satellite Navigation Summit includes plenary discussions and presents a concise update on the main activities in worldwide satellite navigation systems, in particular:

Session 3. GNSS AND PNT - WHERE IS IT HEADING?GNSS has come a long way in Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) since 1993, when GPS had 24 satellites in orbit, and declared IOC. We now have the US GPS and the Russian Glonass in FOC, with the Chinese Beidou-Compass in IOC, and the European Galileo approaching IOC in 2015/2016. By then we shall also have several regional systems, such as the Indian IRNSS and the Japanese QZSS. Multi-GNSS tools are offering a wide variety of PNT applications to government, business and private consumers, who require maximum efficiency (in terms of accuracy, reliability and resistance to interference) and low cost. This Panel Session will concentrate on application pro-blems, especially in safety and security critical, and commercial applications.

Session 8 ALTERNATIVE POSITION NAVIGATION AND TIME (APNT)An increasing number of systems derive their position from GNSS measurements. At the same time terrestrial systems are decommissioned (LORAN, NDB, VOR). Due to the vulnerability of GNSS to interference and due the dependency on a single system, this is increasingly considered as an exposure. Thus various communities have started developing alternative PNT systems for backup purposes. The challenge with such developments is to find a good compromise between function-ality and costs. This session will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of various options.

Session 9 PROCESSOR AND SEMICONDUCTOR TRENDS FOR GNSS RECEIVERS GNSS receiver architecture trends are reversing from host-based back to system-on-chip; to enable low-power location, processing is offloaded from the host back to the GNSS chip. A premium is placed on fast acquisition, duty cycling, low standby power and leakage currents. We will discuss these trends, also the future of Moore’s law: is it slowing down, by how much, and how much longer before we run into fundamental limits? And then what? We’ll go from chip design issues of today, to the GNSS of tomorrow, and finally we’ll peer ahead at the fundamental physics underlying the electronics of the future.

Session 11 THE ROLE OF GNSS AND SPACE SENSORS IN “BIG DATA”?„Big Data” is a new evolving concept in sampling and combining many data bases which were ini-tially collected for different purpose. Big Data comprises the data accumulation and the processing steps with respect to certain target functions. In contrary to “Small Data” the amount of data is ex-tremely large and cannot be handled by classical computer networks. Potentially the collected data is derived from the internet, financial transactions, fixed & mobile communication as well as social networks and PNT. The space time context of Big Data is introduced by GNSS. In the plenary the chances and risks of “Big Data” will be discussed with a certain focus on GNSS and other space related data sources.
