City

Scent in the City have been looking into creating a non-profitable workshop space in the centre of Liverpool situated under Churchill Way flyover. To pay for the work-shop, the community will need to work together and fundraise for the build.

This workshop will aim to bring the community together by learning a simple method in which to create floral perfumes and also learn how to grow the flowers from seeds or seedlings. This will help to give city dwellers a better understanding of gardening and being self sufficient within the city.

The idea for this project first came from my visit to Tilberthwaite Quarry, after this I had to create an object based on ‘Presence and Absence’. Steel has been used to represent weathering and created rust by using the chemical reaction of metal and vinegar. The chemical reaction theme which is where the idea for both the perfume and the use of rusted steel on the exterior came from.

The location of the flyover is near the city centre, it is an area which is used a lot by commuters. It is situated next to Liverpool Library and not far away from one of the main universities. The area of the site in which the Scent In The City workshop will be is underneath one of the main areas of the flyover, which was neglected and dis-used.

1. This is the reception area of Scent in the city. Here you will be wel-comed to the workshop if booked or if not you will be able to book an allocated time slot.

2. You will be given an apron here to protect your clothes whilst pick-ing the flowers and making the perfume.

3. This is where the raised beds will be in which you will be able to pick and choose which flowers you will want in your perfume. Once picked you will then be shown how to plant more flowers.

4. The flowers may be a little dirty from being in the mud so you will be able to rinse them.

5. Once clean, you will take your flowers over to the table, where you will be shown how to dissect the flowers, leaving you with just the petals.

6. You will be shown upstairs, where you will be allocated a workbench in which you can work in pairs or on your own.

7. Here you will be shown a demonstration on how to make the per-fume.

8. Once your finished you will be able to put the perfume into a sci-ence flask to take home with you.

Within perfume making there are specfic flowers which in bloom give off some amazing aroma’s which are perfect for floral scents. Above are the spe-cific flowers Scent in the City would have avaliable in the raised beds outside. To ensure suitability there will have to be a minimal entrance fee to cover

ongoing costs.
