1) Common Earthball (Scleroderma citrinum) sometimes known pigskin poison puffball, is the most common species of earthball in the UK and occurs widely in woods, heathland and in short grass from autumn to winter. It superficially looks like the edible puff ball, but the Earthball is poisonous, but not fiercely so, nevertheless it is inedible and should be avoided. _____________________________________________________________________________________ 2) Birch Polypore. Piptoporus betulinus, commonly known as the birch polypore, birch bracket, or razor strop, is one of the most common polyporous bracket fungi and, as the name suggests, grows almost exclusively on birch trees. The brackets burst out from the bark of the tree, and these fruiting bodies can last for more than a year. It has been known to kill birch trees as well. Technically, it is an edible mushroom, with a strong, pleasant "mushroomy" odour, but a bitter taste. The velvety cut surface of the fruiting body was traditionally used as a strop for finishing the finest of edges on razors. It is also said to have medicinal properties. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-septic properties which have been known since ancient times. _____________________________________________________________________________________ 3) Spotted Toughshank (Rhodocollybia maculate) . This fungus is generally quite widespread in deciduous and sometimes coniferous woodland, generally hiding under bracken. Fruiting in the late summer to early autumn.. Inedible due to its toughness and bitter taste.
