funding opportunities newsletter for the faculty …...mrc methodology for stratified medicine –...
TRANSCRIPT
Funding opportunities in this newsletter are listed chronologically, starting with the earliest deadline. To allow easy navigation, funding opportunities are colour-coded by discipline according to the key below. Where possible, each opportunity lists the funder, the title, some detail on the scope of the opportunity, the value of the award, and the closing date for applications.
Highlight Opportunities The second round of UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships will have a deadline for submission of the mandatory Expression of Interest of 4 October 2018. As institutional support is required from year 3, a QUB managed bid process is in operation, details of which were circulated on 17 July. The deadline for submission to the managed
bid is 20 August. Further details can be found in the Fellowships section, or requested from the Research Development team.
The NC3Rs will soon launch their new funding scheme priority area for 2019, which will aim to encourage greater use of non-mammalian model organisms for 3Rs purposes, and will run across all of their response mode funding schemes. The model organisms considered within remit of the highlight notice are Drosophila, Nematodes, Galleria mellonella, & Zebrafish embryos and larvae. Projects should focus on the development and validation of a research application for the models listed, or on the transfer of an established model to a mammalian model laboratory. A free information event will be held in central London on 4 Sept – register here.

*NERC Demand Management criteria limit Queen’s to submitting one standard grant application per round. Consequently, there
is an internal bid management process, whereby Expressions of Interest (available from Dr Mani Narayanan) are considered by
an internal NERC Managed Bid panel. The panel will select one EoI to go forward for full proposal development. The bid
management process for the Jan 2019 deadline will open in August, with a deadline for return in late September.

Save the date: Dr Anne-Marie Coriat, Head of UK and Europe Research Landscape at The
Wellcome Trust will visit QUB on 4 October as part of a UK-wide roadshow which aims to
provide information on their newly designed Four-year PhD Programmes in Science. The
programme design is based on results of an extensive survey of science PhD training that WT
carried out in 2017, and includes a range of changes designed to improve the structure of PhD
training. This visit would be particularly beneficial to proposed directors of PhD programmes,
although please note, clinical PhD programmes are not eligible in this call.
While here, Anne-Marie will also be able to talk more widely about strategic issues, research opportunities and
challenges, and WT’s strategy and funding. To express interest in attending, please email Research Development.

Internal Funding Opportunities The Research Grant Enabler Fund supports the
development and competitiveness of research funding
applications to a major funder - Research Council or other
strategically important UK-based funding sources. Available
to QUB academic or research staff, applicants can avail of
up to £3,000 per year. Guidance notes and application
forms are available here.
Queen’s University Academic Staff Conference Fund
provides funding for academic members of staff travelling
to international conferences to deliver oral presentations.
Application form is available here.
The Impact Case Study Fund is intended to support the
development and evidencing of engagement and impact in
order to optimise impact case studies for return to the next
REF exercise. Guidance and application forms are available.
Internal support for EU funding applications
Our EU Networking Fund can cover costs to attend or
organise partner meetings.
Our Support fund for Coordinators can cover the costs of an
internal application manager.
Leveraged Studentship Scheme
The aim of the Leveraged Studentship Scheme is to drive a
change in the structure of our research income portfolio
and, in particular, to support our research leaders, large-
scale, strategic applications and PhD student cohorts. The
policy for consideration for a leveraged studentship has
changed recently. Allocations of studentships will only be
made for –
1) Institutional bids e.g. single, managed bids of significant size and scale.
2) A limited range of prestigious funded Fellowships (ERC, some RCUK, Royal Society and Wellcome Trust).
3) Applications where leverage support is a clear mandatory requirement from the funder(s).
Applications for leveraged studentships are being considered for 2019/20 onwards. Application form is available here
MRC PROXIMITY to DISCOVERY: Industry Engagement Fund - Round 3
The P2D: Industry Engagement Fund (P2D:IEF) supports universities in building
relationships with industry partners and improving understanding between academia and
industry. The QUB MRC P2D Travel Fund can be used to support Early Stage Industry
Engagement Activities e.g. visits to companies to discuss areas of mutual interest with a
view to developing an academic-industry collaboration. Applications should be submitted at least 1 month in advance of the
planned travel and all activities must take place before the fund closes on 31 August 2018. QUB academics, research or
professional staff are eligible to apply. For further information and application guidance please contact Dr. Marie-Louise Cairns
in the Business Alliance Team.
The MRC P2D Postdoctoral Industrial Placement Fund (PIP) aims to support greater understanding of industry research
amongst postdoctoral researchers. Applications to this scheme are only permitted for activity that is aligned to MRC science
areas. Whilst applications involving existing university collaborative partners are welcome, these will need to demonstrate why
funding is required to further develop the relationship. You are eligible to apply if you are a member of Queen’s health sciences
research staff. It is expected that costs would not exceed £2,000 per applicant. This is an open call, and applications will be
reviewed on an ad-hoc basis, but should be submitted at least one month in advance of the planned travel. For further
information and application guidance please contact Dr. Marie-Louise Cairns.
