Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants (JAG) – Local Program • 40% must be allocated directly to units of local government • Locals entities entitled to >$10,000 can apply directly to BJA • Deadline in early summer • Check allocations at www.bja.gov/ProgramDetails.aspx?Program_ID=59
Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants (JAG) – State Program • 60% must be allocated to states • States can use money for state based projects • States also required to “pass-through” funds through to local governments • Deadline in early summer • Check state sites regularly • State Administrative Agency - www.ojp.usdoj.gov/saa/index.htm

Allowed: • Police cruisers, police boats, and police helicopters • Construction of penal or correctional institutions • State and local initiatives • Technical assistance and training • Personnel • Equipment and supplies • Contractual support • Information systems for criminal justice • Research and evaluation Prohibited: • Vehicles, vessels, and aircraft (except as noted above) • Luxury items • Real estate • Construction projects (except as noted above) • Replacing funds that have been appropriated for the same purpose

Purpose: Develop a comprehensive and coordinated approach to public safety and victimization issues

• Applications are typically due in early Spring
• Builds capabilities at the state and local levels
• Assists in implementing the state’s homeland security strategies
• 25% of SHSP and UASI appropriated funds must be dedicated towards law enforcement terrorism prevention-oriented activities
• Look for a possible consolidated program (National Preparedness Grant Program)
