There’s a lot you have to keep in mind: you want to make sure the events are fun for

everyone, ensure that everyone can participate, and stay within your budget. You also

don’t want to repeat the same activities too often.

community starting right now!

Scrapbooking evens are easy and everyone gets to make they can hold onto, show off to their grandchildren, and enjoy for years to come.

There are two different kinds of scrapbooking events you can run. You can print pictures from previous events and guide everyone through creating the same scrapbook. Alternatively, you can lay out crafts, ask residents to bring pictures, and give them the tools they need to make their own scrapbooks.

Either waEither way, your residents will have a ton of fun going through old memories and creating a a physical book they can hold and experience time and time again.

Scrapbooking

Your residents probably have amazing stories that they love to retell. Ask them to bring their favorite item or photo to share with others. Make a circle and have them go around the room and share their favorite item and the story attached to it.

It might be a photo of their grandchildren, a book that has some sentimental value, or an object with a personal meaning. You’re sure to get some great stories!

Show & Tell

Audio Book ClubGiven that some of your residents may have difficulty reading, you can run an audio book club instead of a traditional book club. Have your residents come together and listen to a story or book, one chapter every day. Once you finish the book, you can have a group discussion. It’s an easy way to give your residents something in common that they can talk about and look forward to every day.

Guest LecturesAging doesn’t mean losing your sense of curiosity: your residents are still eager to learn new things and expand their understand of the world. Look to your local colleges or schools to see if a professor or teacher would be interested in lecturing about something new and interesting at your community.

Movies & PopcornAnother inexpensive and simple event is a movie and popcorn night. Get your residents excited about the event by letting them vote for the movie they want to watch and creating an exciting event poster that builds anticipation. Pop some fresh popcorn and get lost in a classic movie or a new release.

KaraokeYou don’t need a fancy karaoke machine to host a fun karaoke event. Instead, turn to YouTube, where you can find most songs (with their lyrics!), for free to stream. All it takes is a television and a microphone and you’re good to go!

Wii BowlingHave a Wii? Wii games are a great way to keep your residents active and moving around. Consider organizing a Wii bowling tournament. Use a poster board to put up the brackets and build some friendly competition amongst the residents.

AromatherapyUse lavender candles and essential oils to create an aromatherapy night. Your residents will feel like they’re in a professinal spa. Massage the oil on their hands and arms to help soothe them and relieve stress. It’s an easy activity that helps awaken your residents’s senses and makes them feel like they’ve been transported to another place.

Indoor VolleyballWe came across this idea online and thought it was brilliant! Host an indoor volleyball event by setting up a pool volleyball net and using an inflatable beach ball. Have everyone spread around and pass the ball back and forth. It’s simple, it’s something different and exciting, and it’ll help keep your residents active.

KnittingWant something a little more low-key and relaxed? Knitting is a standard, “go-to” event that can span several days. It is also fairly inexpensive and enables your residents to create something personal and tangible. It’s also extremely good for mental acuity.

Collaborative QuiltingSimilar to knitting, quilting is another great event that’s simple to put together. Instead of having everyone create individual quilts, ask your residents to work together to create a large quilt with different patches. It’ll will be fun for them to watch as the quilt grows and the patches bring a communal story to life.

Garden ClubDo you have access to an outdoor space with comfortable weather? Gardening clubs can be a great way to get residents outside in the fresh air. They can plants seeds in their own pots which they decorate, or work as a team to grow vegetables or flowers the whole community can enjoy.

Volunteer BandsLocal school bands are a great source of entertainment for your residents. Reach out to schools and see if they would be interested in playing for your residents. The school bands love it because it’s practice for them and your residents will love it because it’s something new that doesn’t happen often.

Music ClubAs you may have experienced, music can make a real impact on your residents. They can choose their favorite songs and share them with the group or listen individually. Residents will love listening to music and reliving the memories they may have previously forogtten. Music can also be a boon to your residents’ memory and concentration.

Tai ChiTai Chi is a type of exercise that employs slow, graceful movements in a steady and focused manner. It is said to reduce stress and improve overall fitness. While traditional Tai Chi requires standing and leg movements, it can also be done in a chair. It’s an easy way to keep your resident fit, focused and relaxed.

International NightTake your residents on a journey around the world, without ever leaving your community. Choose a different country each night and showcase different pieces of the culture. Highlight the food, the music, and possibly a cultural activity.

Walking ClubThe easiest way to keep your residents active is to have them walk. Create a club that sets aside time every few days just to walk and talk. The structure ensure your residents have something to look foward to. You can also walk to different plances along different routes to keep things fresh.

Pen Pal ProgramCreate a Pen Pal Program for your residents. Match them with local school children or residents from other communities across the state or country.
