From Bill: The Arts Club Theatre Company has been my home for over 46 years. I was fi rst hired as a Stage Manager in the spring of 1970 and was fascinated by the Seymour Street venue. Within a couple of years, I convinced the trustees that I could choose the plays, and they then allowed me to run the theatre. Of course, I was thrilled, yet also nervous. But one thing I knew: this would be “fun”—at least in the sense that it would be enjoyable to take on a job that would allow me to select plays, work with theatre artists, and see the whole process through to opening night. I no doubt underestimated the challenges that would lie ahead. Still, I can say that over the many years I have been privileged to be the Artistic Director of this amazing company, it has never not been “fun.” Sure, it’s not very amusing when things go awry, but even if some would call those experiences “not fun,” we would usually come through smiling at the absurdity of worrying about things that were often beyond our control. Even with many serious moments—especially those involving large decisions, like the move to Granville Island, the renovation of the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, and the opening of the

WELCOMEGoldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre—the most “fun” aspects of the job remained: working with the many theatre artists who are central to our shows, and bringing live theatre to you, our audience members.

We’ve gathered together some incredible alumni and nabbed emcees Todd Talbot and Sara-Jeanne Hosie (who you’ll see tonight in Fun Home) to host a show directed by esteemed choreographer and director Valerie Easton and written by Deborah Williams of Mom’s the Word fame. Featuring musical highlights from Bill’s career—Cabaret, West Side Story, Miss Saigon, and more—it’s going to be a night to remember! It’s all happening at our Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage on Sunday, March 4, and all proceeds from this special fundraiser go towards the Bill Millerd Artist Fund to provide on-going training for local artists. In the summer of 2016, I was in New York on holiday and I wandered into Fun Home at Circle in the Square Theatre. Well, to be honest,

I lined up for tickets in the morning because I read that it had won fi ve Tonys, including Best New Musical. But I knew nothing more about it, nor had I heard of Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel, on which it is based. Billed as a family tragicomedy, I was intrigued. I walked out devastated, elated, profoundly moved. “Every character in this piece is moving earnestly forward at all times into an unknown and unknowable future,”

writes Lisa Kron, author of the script. And, indeed, the piece is full of hope, innocence, fear, joy, aspiration, obsession, secrets, half-truths, and a sense that the world is changing, hurtling forward. A tension exists between a daughter coming out, coming of age, fl ying, soaring and her father simultaneously falling, spinning, plummeting, much like a modern-day Icarus. Kudos to the Arts Club for bringing this new musical to the Granville Island Stage. My thanks to this extraordinary cast, who have assembled from all over the country—welcome to the Fun Home!
