Block Assembly1. Paper piece each of the 24 foundation units (1/4 circles). Trim around the outside, leaving 1/4” seam
allowance around all sides. Carefully remove the papers and press well. (Diagram 3)
2. Join a paper pieced 1/4 circle to a Template A background fabric piece, carefully aligning the centers andthe straight ends, pinning where needed. Creasing the background Template A piece finds the center foralignment. Diagram 4. Press well (Diagram 5).
3. Sew four of the units together to form a full Compass Block (Diagram 6). Make a total of six blocks.
4. Use the Template B circle and transfer markings to the wrong side of each Fabric E square. Place theFabric E square right side down onto an interfacing square and sew ON the drawn line, around the entirecircle. Trim around the sewn line, leaving a 1/8” seam allowance. Clip into the interfacing and turn thefaced circle right side out. Smooth the curved edges and press well. Repeat for remaining Fabric Esquares, making 5 more compass center circles (Diagram 7).
5. Center the Fabric E circle over the opening at the center of the Compass Block and pin securely. Useyour favorite hand or machine appliqué stitch and sew in place. Turn the block over and trim away anyexcess fabric and interfacing. Make 6 complete blocks in this manner (Diagram 8).
