Note from Pastor David Luckert

Into the New Year …..

I like to begin each new year focusing on our two

sacraments: baptism and communion.

On January 3rd I will preach on the importance of

baptism and invite all of us to come forward - as we are

comfortable - and celebrate our baptism. There will be

a fountain set up from which we will be able to pause

and thank God for His ongoing work in our lives.

On January 10th I will preach on the cup from which

Jesus did not drink when He invited His disciples to eat

and drink during the Passover meal. This is a special

cup which points to His return.

On January 17th I will begin a series based on what

Jesus teaches us about our heavenly Father. This

series is based on a quote I read recently from a book

by John Ortberg and Dallas Willard.

Many people think of Jesus as our Savior, as

the one who will get us into heaven. So the

question is “Have I accepted Jesus as my

Savior?” But we never ask the question “Have I

accepted Jesus as my teacher?” And that’s the

real question. With the disciples, it began there.

They began by accepting him as their teacher,

and then accepting him as their Savior - which

included, of course, their eternal destiny - was a

natural outflow of that. But they started with

Jesus as their teacher, because we all have to

learn how to live. (Living In Christ’s Presence)

I am looking forward to spending several months

sitting at the feet of Jesus, walking the streets with

Jesus, and listening to the words of Jesus teach me

about life with our heavenly Father.

Praying for a year filled with the presence and peace of

our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

MUSIC NOTES My philosophy of recruitment for new choir members is actually quite simple. If I see

someone with a hymnal in their hand and their lips are moving, then I make the simple

assumption that they are singing; therefore, they become fair game in my quest for new

choir members. Some of you are aware of this because I have asked you repeatedly to

come and join our “merry band” of singers…sometimes without success…but, joyfully,

sometimes with success.

Let me tell you about two specific instances of success stories.

I had noticed a young couple (everybody looks young to me now!!) sitting on the left

side of the sanctuary as I look out who had hymnals in their hands with lips moving.

I was always just a bit tardy getting to them at the end of the service. I did not know

their names, so I couldn’t even phone them. Then last year during the Chancel Choir

spaghetti luncheon I spotted them getting their meals to take away. I broke all know

speed records getting to them to let them know that I had observed them with hymnals in their hands. I asked them

to join us…and you all know them now as two of our newest choir members…Andy and Erin LaGrone. Their one

year anniversary as choir members is rapidly approaching.

Then about three months ago, I again noticed a young couple sitting, this time, on my right looking out with hymnals

held high. Thankfully, one of the Chancel Choir members delayed their departure by greeting them after the

benediction (and in case you’re wondering, we are known as the type of church that makes visitors feel welcome!). I

was able to speak with them as well. The husband let me know very quickly that he was not singing material and his

wife verified this! But the wife has come to choir and brought her mother. Patty Foster, the mom, and Kate

Orrostieta-Foster, the daughter, are now faithful choir members!!

And this is how we grow a choir program…because the LaGrones and Orrostieta-Fosters have little ones that will

one day be a part of the church…and, the church music program. AND…we have plenty of room to grow. Come

join us for an adventure in singing and worship.

Grace to you all…….Jack
