English B ible C lass S ession a t Matsubara Middle SchoolCan you recognize the Bible Chorus for the day) John 3:16.

English Bible Class sessions were begun when we wereinvited by an English teacher from the Middle School toteach English for one hour each week. Alex told him wewould be willing to do so if we could teach English Biblestories. We have worked out an arrangement with Bettyand I teaching one hour each week Betty teaches an English Bible chorus and I give the Bible story. Nagano San,the English teacher has prepared copies of the story for thestudents to study during the week. During the class sessionI give the story oncevery, very slowly to help them withtheir pronounciation It is given once at ordinary speedwith a Japanese translator so the meaning will be clear. This is followed by a question and answer periodall inEnglish. Never in all my teaching in the states did I everhave a class of young people ninth graders) give so muchattention to one Bible story

NEW BIBLE CLASS FOR HIGH SCHOOL AGE

On March 14th the ninth-graders at the Middle Schoolin Matsubara graduated. Soon they will be entering theirfirst year of high school (comparable to our sophmore yearat home). Beginning in April, I will be teaching the newclass of ninth-graders a t the Middle School in Matsubara. As I had stood before the present group of ninth-graders(about 60 or 70 in number) for the next to las t t ime Ithought, Only one more lesson and these young people willbe graduating and I will have lost contact with most ofthem. When again will they hear a Bible sto ry or have anyChristian teaching? Sixty pair of warm brown almond-shaped eyes had been on me as I taught, For unto you isbom th is day a Saviour How many wouldever really know the Saviour? Ten or twelve of the grouphad started attending our church services. But what of theothers? I spoke to the English teacher, Nagano San. Howmany of these ninth-graders would be interested in continuing an English Bible class if I conducted one in the Bills'home? Very few, he said, About ten . However, hewas very gracious and offered to present the idea to theclass and secure fo r me th e nam es and addresses o f thoseinterested. (Incidentally, Nagano San, himself, has beenattending church services quite faithfully and often bringsteacher friends with him). I felt that if only the ten wereinterested the class would be well worth while, but when hebrought me the list of names66 had indicated that theywould like to attend such a class Of course, a number ofthese will be hindered by the time of meeting, their jobs, their high school activities, etc., but such a list was certainly encouraging

For a text I am wanting to secure a child s Bible storybook that presents the stories in simple English. If thesecan be obtained as low as 50c or 75c apiece the students willbe able to buy their own texts. I felt, a t first, that I didnot have time for the fourth class a week (I teach aWomen's Bible Class on Wednesday and a college age classon Friday night). Language, Bible Courses and correspondence I knew would demand more and more time^yet I knewtoo, that I must find time to teach these young people, for tomy knowledge, (and with the exception of Mrs. Bills, whoteaches the choruses) I am their only Christian teacher. . and how shall they believe in Him of whom they

    SUM A S NIT RIUM SERVI E

Each Sunday morning at 6:30 a. m. approximately 50radios a t Suma San ita rium a t Kobe are tuned to th e Thisis Life, radio program. These listeners compose the non-Catholic group of patients in the sanitarium, and those whoare able to do so meet later in the day for a worship service.

From this group came several requests for the freeNew Testaments that were offered on the air by ChristianRadio Mission. Delivery of these New Testaments wasmade by Betty Bills, Martin Clark, five Japanese Christiansand myself one Sunday afternoon while Alex was still inKorea. Betty and I and the Japanese folks drove the jeepinto Osaka to the station and parked it there. A series offlat tires the previous week and no money to buy new onesforced us into the decision of leaving the car in Osaka andtak ing the train on to Kobe. Martin met us in Osaka. Wedivided the NewTestaments into bags and furoshikis (largescarfs used to carry packages), and boarded the train forKobe. Part of the trip wasmade by express part by a locaitrain and part by a bus that took us up into the mountain. The last fifteen minutes of the trip was made on footthrough the scenic mountain country to the sanitarium.

The patients in the sanitarium had seen us climbingthemountain road and wereeagerly awaiting our arrival. Veryquickly a worship service was arranged and twenty-five ofthe patients met with us in the dining room to receive theirNew Testaments and to listen to Ohtomo San preach fromGod s Word. We were reluctant to leave when the serviceended but felt we must hurry to catch the bus back downthe mountainside. One very joyful person walked with usto the busa young lady who had met with us in the worship service and who was being dismissed from the sanitra-ium. Betty remarked that she looked very much like abride in her colorful kunono and her face radiant with happiness. Her friends and fellow patients cheered as she left.Just before we rounded the last bend that would take usout of sight of the sanitarium we turned to wave to thosewho must remain behind, realizing that all too often wetake for granted some of God s most precious blessings.

March 31 Apr. 2 the -All Japan Haia^y of the Ciiurches of Christ;^as held here in Osaka^ Tnis, along vHth the Missionary ConTentionjon the ?riday following, f i l led the vreek in a very en j o;y i;ble ^^ay.of course, coiildnH understand the Japanese sessions b it foundthe gli3h ones quite interestingo Especially did I enjoy theMissionary Convention. There were a few cf our raiGSionarles InJapan that 1 had not met before and was very happy to have this opportunity to get acquainted with them. One of the outstandivigthings about t h i s par t icu la r missionary convention was the facttha t it was the l a rges t group of our own missionaries ever togather outside of the United States There vrere 33 adul t missionaries present from Japan and Korea, I t was really a history makingevent in the missionaiy endeavor c f our churches. Rven more inh-Dortant^ i t seems to me, was the v/onderful sp i r i t and the closefellowship o9 the entire group. We a ll came away feeling greatlyinspired and more closely united in spir i t and purpose, and withincreased zeal and determination to perform faithfully the tasksGod p la ces b efo re u s

One question that many of you have kept asking has been, Haveyou found a placc.to l ive? I'm quite happy to say now that Ihave. During convention week I rented an apartment and movedfreight , which had been stored a l l winter.. I t was not un t i l theweek after the convention, however, that I moved my trunks fromthe Bills. Then, of course, came the getting-settled processwhich i s s t i l l going on. This takes much more t ine in the Orientthan in America. No one rushes the Orientals., Ttiere are someadvantages and some disadvantages to my apartment the one greatdisadvantage being the distance from the Bills. They are livingin Matsubara and I in Kobe about 2 hours traveling away. Needless to say, I don^t go to Matsubara every day bat do have tospend two or three days week there. Part of the work and correspondence I handle from my apartment. The apartment about threeor < rooms in size) had no kitchen so one of the tatami rooms ishaving to be oonverbed since the tatami flooring is unsuitable fora k-i tchen^

Follow UpThe island of Tsushima is being

invaded by the preachers from Osakauader the direction of Bro. MartinClark of Osaka Bible Seminary. Thisisland located between Japan andKorea had a large number of listeners to our program, Th is is Life ,l as t season. In fact i t was rebroad-cast on a radio-defusion system toevery home in one of the largeitowns. A large number of peoplewrote us of their in te res t in Qir is tjanity. There is no Christian workon this is land of half million peopleexcept two or three Episcopal peoplewho meet for a lay s ervi ce once in awhi l e .

Othomo-san and Bro. Clark madea trip in the spring and arranged forfour cr five evangelistic meetings inthe larger towns for the first week inSeptember. This is a case where Radio has been the a ir arm o f Ch ris ti anwork and has prepared the ground forGod s infantry, the preachers, whomust go in and occupy the land.In Kobe, one of the major cities ofJapan, where our people have neverhad a work, the follow-up is taking alittle different form. Exie Fultz, who is now living in this city is gathering together those who have contacted us in response to the radioprogram This Is Life. She wills t a r t a Bible c l a s s and i t wil t nodoubt very soon grow into a church. One person in Kobe has already beenbaptized as a dircct result of theradio programs, and a number ofothers are deeply interested.

Another phase of follow up workis the Bible Correspondence course. We have th r ee cou r se s a va il a bl e .Oneis in English for people in Europeand England. The other two are forJapanese, one is completely Japanese and the other in English withJapanese notes for the great mass ofs t uden t s who are so anx ious to improve their English.

    A NEW WORK TO BEGIN IN KOBE. JAPAN i r f r tr t r tr i r kMr i rM r t r ^ ^

Fujimoto San s baptism (pictured on page 1 marks the begimiingof a new work of the Churches of Chr is t in Kobe, Japan.

Kobe, a seaport, and one of Japan s five major cities, is as wellchurched by denominations as any area in Japan but no work has beendone there among New Testament churches.

Since moving to Kobe in April it has been my prayer that, if theLord so willed. He would use me to establish a work for Him there. Earlierthis summer I had done some follow-up work with the Kobe correspondents of the Christian Radio Mission broadcast. Some had been only curious, some only a little interested, and many ill and in santitoriums. Butfrom these contacts there were four young men (including FujimotoSan) who rea lly seemed interested in studying the scriptures. Theseyoung men will form the nucleus of a weekly Bible Class which yall beg^non Sunday,September 13. Some of my neighbors will also be includedin this class).

Fujimoto San s eagerness to leam more of Christ led him to theNosegawa (Osaka) Christian Service camp where he made his confessionof Christ. The following Sunday, August 16, he was baptized in theShukgawa river by Sato San, minister of the Koyoen church. Unti l we canbegin services in Kobe this fall, Fujimoto San will attend the church atKoyoen but after that time he wants to work with Takahashi San andmyself in beginning a church in Kobe.

We rejoice in Fujunoto San s decision to follow Christ and feel thati t is important for several reasons. First of all i t is important because asoul is won to Christ. t is, also, important because i t is visible evidenceof the worth of radio work, since our first contact with him came throughthe This Is Life, program. And then, as has already been stated, i t isimportant because i t opens a work in an area that has hitherto had noteaching on the position of the New Testament churches.

The first meeting of this group will be held in my apartment but assoon as possible we want to meet elsewhere. We are considering twopossible locations where small rooms have been offered to us. We feelthat, because of their size both rooms are inadequate, but we are willing toin either location if the Lord so leads us.
