prepare myself for full-

time Christian service. I

received my dsgrea in the

spring of 1949 and for two years was

employed by the First Christian

Church, Evansviile, Indiana, as secre

tory and youth-director. This position

I resigned in the fall of '51 to enter

the School of Religion, Butler Univer

sity. During my year at Butler I served

as youth-director at the East Forty-

ninth St. Christian Church, Indianap

olis, Indiana.

PURPOSE

To halp in the gigantic task, under

taken by V. Alex Bills, oF sending out

the message of salvation of the Lord

Jesus Christ "unto the ends of the

world" through tho medium of radio.

To close my work with the East

Forty-ninth St. Christian Church on

June 22, 1952, in order to accept

speaking engagements for presenting

the work of the mission and to raise

necessary funds for living-link, pas

sage and equipment.

Radio Work Developing

The Christian Radio Mission is awork of the Christian Churches andChurches of Christ inAmerica. Itisdevoted to bringing the Gospelmes-sage of Christ to Japan and othernations of the Orient by means ofRadio Broadcasting. The Bills'family is already on the field in Osaka,Japan and later will be joined byothers.

Mrs. Isabel Dittemore, formermissionary on the Tibetan border ofChina, will come to Japan this Falland will be responsible for developing broadcasts in Chinese. Thesewill be released from short wavestations, probably in Formosa andthe Philippines.

In Chicago, Abram C. Azar, anElder in a Christian Church, whowas born in Lebanon, Syria is preparing programs in the Arabiclanguage which will presentthe Wordof God to thousands of Moslem people in Southern Asia and NortnernAfrica, as the program is releasedfrom Manila.

This program is produced byRobert M. Lillie, Cedar Lake, Ind.and is tape-recorded by Wayne Douglas, who graciously gives not onlyof his time and the services of hisMagnecorder, but supplies the tapeas well.

The goal of the Christian RadioMission is to own and operate ourown Christian Radio station. It willuse both long and shortwave and willcover all of Asia, Europe and NorthAfrica with the Gospel. It will belocated in Japan or some Far Easterncountry depending on the attitude ofthe government in giving the necessary permits to operate a radiostation. However, in the meantime,we are devoting our activities to producing separate Christian programsin various languages and releasingthem on various existing stations.For this workour immediate need is

MANY PEOPLE IN JAPAN LISTEN TO RADIO. ^In the Osaka area, morepeople have radios than in many parts of the United States. Since thereare not nearly enough missionaries to reach all of the millions of peoplewho have never heard of Jesus, Mommie and Daddy are ^oing to use theradio to take the message to the people. This family is having tea, allseated on the floor. But from Grandfather right down to "baby chon," theyare listening to a radio broadcast. In a few months, groups like this willbe able to listen to Christian programs.

"Each week, we have six meetingsof various kinds here in our house inMatsubara Village. Three morningseach week are devoted to languagestudy. Mr. Bills is teaching in TheOsaka Bible Seminarytwo-and-one-half hours on four days a week. Atleast one day will be spent in takingcare of different kinds of businessincluding the purchase of food. BothMr. and Mrs. Bills teach two afternoons each week i n the Seminary.Mrs. Bills is teaching music to thefuture teachers and preachers ofJapan. Mr. Bills is teaching aRadio course. The two girls on the left work in ourhome. Neither had ever seen a Bible orheard the name of Jesus Christ when theycame to us.

The girl in the center is in High Schooland had been attending special classes byCatholics when we moved here.

The girl second from the right tells astory of having become interested in Christianity sometime ago and started attendinga Free Methodist church in Osaka. Whenshe told them she wanted to become aChristian they instructed her to attend twoor three all-night prayer meetings first inorder to pray for salvation. She couldn'tsee the point so dropped out.

The girl on the right is froma so-calledChristian home. She had been sprinkled asa baby.

HOW YOU CAN HELPNOW IS a very important time in the his

tory of Japan and for that matter thewhole world. With the signing of the treatythere is no doubt but that the Communistswill make an even greater effort to recruitpeople to their side.

While our village is one of the Communist centers, we feel very little dangerpersonally, but we are concerned with thepoison that can be planted in the minds ofthe people. Undoubtedly, it is a timewhen your missionaries should make theirmessage heard even more than in the past.

We have plans for a sound truck to holdmass meetings where many thousands canbe told the story of Christ. Plans for moreliterature and tracts to carry the message,plans for Bible Correspondence Course,plans for Christian records, for greater

Seminary Offers Radio, Visual Aids

THE CHRISTIAN RADIO classes inOsaka Bible Seminary have been

creating much interest. Both of thelarge daily papers and one of theweekly radio publications have carried stories about this phase of ourwork. This course, the first to beoffered in any school or university inJapan, is the first step in trainingthe Japanese Christians to presentthe gospel by air to their own people.

Radio has long been an importantfactor in Japanese life. Besides the108 radio stations operated by thegovernment, 16 new commercialradio stations will soon be started.The firstone is already broadcastinghere in Osaka. But even more impressive is the announcement of

Elans for 23 Television stations toe in operation in Tokyo within six

months. This tremendous interestin radio is of course a real challengeto the Church. Several missionarygroups in an interdenominationalset-up have sent a Japanese man tothe U. 5. for studyin religious radio.But we are the onlyones with a training program. This Fall we will enlarge the class to include someoutsiders. With this group we willbe soon producing real Christianbroadcasts. We are also extendingour work in the Bible Seminary to include a course in the use of Audio-Visual materials in Christian teaching. The name of this new departmentis "Radio Audio-Visual Mass Communication Media."

McElroyof the Philippine Mission Churches of Christreports the establishment of a new churchasthe result of radio broadcasts. One of theirnative preachers, Diego Romulo, conducts aprogram in the Bico language eve ry Saturdaynight over DZAS in Manila. A group of fishermen at Gumaca heard the program and sentfor Bibles in their language and for a preacher. Following the baptism of a number of thema church was established.

• IN JAPAN, Martin Clark of the OsakaChristian Mission has completed one year ofdaily broadcasts on the Armed Forces RadioService radio station in Osaka. This has beena real contribution to the spiritual lives ofmany of the service people of the area. A fewhave been baptized as a direct result of this"Morning Devotional" program. InNovemberit received the "Gold Iviicrophone of the Monthas the outstanding program in the FarEasternCommand. "

• WE REJOICE with the Brazil ChristianMission that they have been able to get "TheChristians' Hour" - "New Testament Christianity on the Air" broadcast on a radio stationin Goiania, Brazil. The program is made upof the broadcast of the English program asheard in America preceded by the same sermon translated into Portuguese, the nationallanguage.

and the Mervyn E. Green Mennor-ial Missionary Fund we now havecomplete recording studio equipment(except the disc equipment mentionedelsewnere) on its way. ClarenceMoore of International Radio andElectronics has assembled the equipment of professional quality—Magne —corder tape recorder, microphones,turn-table, pick-up arm, amplifiersand such. It is expected to arrive inJapan early in December. It is notcompletely paid for, but we feelsure that regular gifts from our supporters will enable us to pay it outsoon.

Mrs. Dittemore is also bringingan electric organ with her when shesails from San Francisco 11 December. We now need a suitable buildingto house this equipment. A properbuilding for a sound studio is almosta necessity. However, we can beginproductions with makeshift setup inour home.

A-V InstitutesTHE CHRISTIAN RADIO Class and

the new Christian Audio-VisualClass in Osaka Bible Seminary areboth making nice progress. TheAudio Visual class sponsored aninstitute the first MondayinNovember that was attended by about 30missionaries and 15 native leaders.The purpose was to demonstrate newmethods and materials of getting theGospel to more people more euec-tively. It is planned to make the institute a monthly affair.

For the December meetiag, weare having a team of Christian girlsthat have developed the use of Puppets in Christian teaching. Thisgroup is led by the youngest daughter of the famed Dr. Kagawa.

subara (which meets in our house)has had two more baptisms. Thismay seem like slow progress, butthese people are leaving everythingwhen they turn to Christ. Such decisions cannot be made lightly orquickly. When a Japanese becomesa Christian, his whole way of lifemust change. Even his holiaays, theseasons for housecleaning, tne wayof wearing clothes, even the arrangement of flowers —all had religious meaninc. All of that, and theassociations of a lifetime, must begiven up to accept Christ. But truehappiness comes only through Christ.

Christ or CommunismWE HAVE recently been in some

Army hospitals where the wounded soldiers are brought a few hoursafter they have been hit in Korea,What we see is heartbreaking. Theyare just boys really, here one withan arm gone, there one with a legoff, others with part of a face goneor great wounds tornin their bodies.But they don't complain much, theyseem so thankful that they are stillalive. I guess they are remembering their buddies who didn'tgetbackto a hospital but are buriedoutthereon Korean hillsides.

We cannot help but wonder if it isworth all of the high price they arepaying. Although tne battle in Koreaseems important in the long run,Communism cannot be stopped byarmies with guns. If only our leaderswould realize that this is a spiritualconflict, a battle of ideas. OjilyChristianity can halt the onwardmarch of Communism.

Just two days ago in the nearbycity of Kyoto, a Communistic riotbroke out among the students of aso-called Christian colle^. Theymarched on the home of a Diet (likeour Congress) member and stonedit. On the way, they attacked a carof an American missionary. Fortunately the missionary was not inthe car at the time.

Such things will become morecommon. Communism is gaining,not only here in Japan, but elsewhere around the world. With themoney used in killing one Communist soldier; we could obtain theequipment necessary to get out theWord of God in sufficient force tohold this part of Japan, not only forChrist, but for our way of life.

We must have funds to make useof radio to the fullest; equipmentformass meetings must be obtained andputinuse. The Bible seminary training program must be stepped up. Andreinforcements from recruits athome must be rushed to the field.

We are fighting a last ditch standhere in the Orient. If given a chancethe people will accept Christ insteadof Communism. We must give themthat opportunity, and we must haveyour prayers and financial supportto do it.

NEED DISC RECORDER

We were just ready to sign thecontracts for this wonderful opportunity, when we discovered that thestation cannot use tape transcriptions, but must have disc trans-scriptions. We have searchedeverywhere and cannot find anyonehere in Japan who can make the discfor us. To sei^d them back toAmerica and then forward themwould cost entirely too much. So thebest solution seems to be to buyourown disc transcription equipment.This will cost about $700. This seemslike a lot of money, but it is the keyto getting the gospel message toseveral million people.
