Fully automated vertically rising acoustic folding partition system

SKYFOLD…the key to quiet space

Style operates as the selling and technical support arm for two of theworld’s leading moveable partition system manufacturers - SKYFOLDand HUFCOR.

The Company has offices in both the South and the North, and is amember of the AIS "Association of Interior Specialists". The Company operates as a moveable partition specialist, providingdesign, contract management, supply, installation and after salessupport for a wide range of products.

The Hufcor range includes flat panel operable wall systems, glasspartitions and Accordion concertina partitions - please contact us fordetails.

Installation details and considerations…

The typical installation details shown above are based on the standard Compact Drive system, but are also similar for the Microdrive systemas both arrangements utilise direct drive operation with the motor fitted within the ceiling pocket. The only significant difference with theMicrodrive system, apart from the reduction in storage depth, is that the partition has a slightly increased overall thickness of 300mm whenin the closed position. The partition details are very similar for Remote Drive except that the motor is mounted alongside the pocket on aseparate full width parallel shaft. Consequently, it is necessary to keep a clear cable path between the drive shaft and the operating shaft.

Whilst it may be possible to route the drive cables around services, it should generally be considered that the distance between the fixingface (beam height) and the top of the pocket should be completely clear of any obstructions. If services have to penetrate the ceiling voidabove the partition, it is normal practice to install the support steel at a lower height so that the services can pass above. If the installationis within a building with concrete floors and the area has been designed without the need for services to pass through the ceiling void, thenthe simplest method of support is to fit an inverted 200x75 RSC direct to the concrete. However, if the building structure is not suitable, orthere is a need to allow for services, then either an inverted 200x75 RSC or suitable UB should be installed at a lower level.

Technical information…

SKYFOLD can be designed to suit almost any opening size and, dependent on theheight and available fixing depth, it can be driven in two different ways :-

COMPACT & MICRODRIVE : the standard fixing system for average size openingswhere the installation provides sufficient fixing depth within the ceiling void. Themotor is fitted within the ceiling pocket enabling direct drive.

The four panel Microdrive system uses wider panels to compact into a smallerpocket depth and is only available for openings between 3600mm and 7300mmwide, and with a ceiling height between 2440mm and 2745mm.

The five, six and seven panel compact drive system is available for openings notless than 3000mm wide, but not exceeding 18290mm wide, and with a ceilingheight between 2135mm and 3685mm.

REMOTE DRIVE : a virtually unrestricted arrangement for operating tallerpartitions, or to overcome fixing limitations within the ceiling void. The motor ismounted on a separate shaft to one side of the partition line enabling remote drive.

In certain situations the twelve panel remote drive system can be constructed tosuit ceiling heights up to 7300mm. We can also design special panelconfigurations to suit tall ceilings in excess of 9000mm. However, any project over6000mm high should be treated as a "special" and, therefore, it is essential todiscuss the details and intended usage at the earliest possible time opportunity.

The information given in the charts provides an indication of the main dimensionalrequirements for the different drive systems, based on the maximum height foreach available panel configuration. Please call for further details or dimensions ofany intermediary heights.

Designed to perform…SKYFOLD AUTOLIFT WALL SYSTEMS provide a totally different solutionfor the subdivision of space, particularly where acoustic performance, speed of set-up and maximisation of floor area are important factors.

SKYFOLD is unique in that, unlike conventional moveable wall systems,it operates vertically to store compactly within the ceiling void.Operation is fully automated with the motor drive and side sealactivation all being controlled from a single turn of the key switch. The partition opens and closes quietly and effortlessly leaving a clearthreshold without the need for unsightly floor track or side guides.

The modular panel construction is designed and manufactured to suitthe installation height, thereby forming a perfectly flat partition whenclosed which, together with the incorporation of internal retractableside seals, allows partitions to abut at 90˚ if sufficient ceiling depth isavailable. The dual-panel construction provides excellent soundseparation with an acoustic laboratory tested performance of 51dB(Rw)that is virtually maintained on site.

A cleverly designed four-way operational internal pantographmechanism forms the heart of the system providing lift and support forthe panels without visible hinges or fixings. The system is operated bycables which are electrically driven from a motor, which can either bemounted above the partition or remotely to one side if there isinsufficient fixing depth. Apart from the ceiling void and a minimumopening width of 3m, the system has virtually no limitations.

The panels have a smooth metal face, which will accept a wide range offinishes. Vinyl and coloured or woodgrain effect melamine are themost popular as they are practical and hard wearing finishes, butfabric, timber veneer or even plain steel options are all possible. However, as the panels run horizontally, finishes have to be applied inthe same direction and, therefore, consideration must be given torepetitive patterns or pronounced grain timbers.

Designed for Safety and Reliability…To ensure the very highest levels of safety in operation, SKYFOLD incorporates a number of important design features.

the system is powered by a heavy-duty, sealed industrial, high-rated, geared motor, incorporating full overload protection and anelectromagnetic brake system, which will instantly activate should there be a power loss, thereby preventing further movementuntil the supply has been restored.

the motor assembly incorporates a spring-cushioned torque arm to facilitate soft start and stop operation, thereby reducing wear. an in-built closed loop hydraulic checking device controls speed of operation and is coupled with a sensor to detect any possible

malfunction. the heavy-duty pantograph mechanisms are controlled by aircraft grade steel operating cables providing the highest level of

quality and safety, and are designed with the added protection of three full turn overlap onto the cable drums when the partitionis closed.

the bottom bar contains a continuous pressure safety edge to detect any obstructions, thereby safeguarding the partition andpreventing any possible injury or damage.

the side seals are protected from damage as they are housed within the thickness of the dual-panel construction and areoperated automatically without manual intervention, thereby reducing wear and the possibility of incorrect set-up.

activation of the system is normally controlled from spring-return constant hold dual key switches in order to ensure safeoperation. However, remote switching is available if used in conjunction with separate safety measures.

Specified by many of the top Architectural practices across the world for installations in CorporateOffices, Schools and Universities, Hotels and Conference Centres, Theatres, Exhibition Centres,Banks and Airports…the usage is endless.

Technical information…

It should be remembered that SKYFOLD partitions can be designed to suit almost any size of opening. The charts on the back page give a good indication of the maindimensional requirements, but there are some additional features that warrantspecific mention :-

The installed weight of a SKYFOLD partition is approximately 39kgs/m2, which isconsiderably less than a conventional moveable wall system of similar acousticperformance. This load remains evenly distributed across the full width of the openingwhether the partition is open or closed, unlike a sliding folding partition where theweight would be concentrated at one or both sides when stored. This becomes of realsignificance on wider openings, as the structural steel support design can be muchlighter than would normally be necessary with a conventional system.

SKYFOLD partitions operate quickly and smoothly with the turn of a key, and requireno manual intervention as the complete operation cycle is fully automated. Thedeployment time of even the largest partition is rarely more than a couple of minutes, which invariably means that the partition will be used far more regularly than wouldoften be the case with a conventional moveable wall system.

The drive motor requires a 415v 3-phase 50Hz power supply, which should terminatein an isolator box located in a convenient position within the ceiling void and in closeproximity to the motor control panel.

Designed to impress…SKYFOLD installations always attract comments, as the sleek lines and functionalityof the system never fail to impress. Recently winning the prestigious "Association ofInterior Specialists" Gold Award for one of the first contracts to be completed in theUK, the judges found this different approach to moveable walls very impressive, andcommented that "the installation was well designed and constructed, operatedquietly and was finished to a very high standard".
