ICE Green Week 2010 is one of the pilot projects by Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN)

Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Student Chapter for the year 2010. This event was organized

for the second time consecutive by UNITEN ICE Student Chapter with the objectives of to

promote UNITEN ICE Student Chapter to all of the UNITEN students, to educate them more

about Civil Engineering and also of raising the environmental awareness among future

engineers. ICE Green Week 2010 was held in College of Engineering, Universiti Tenaga

Nasional, from 1st February 2010 until 5th February 2010. This project was planned a month ago

with the help of the UNITEN ICE Student Chapter Advisor, Dr. Chua Kok Hua. The theme for

ICE Green Week 2010 is Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development which signify the

reverse the loss of environmental resources. The main event for this ICE Green Week 2010 is the

    exhibition display.

lecture was Geotechnical Failures/Issues, dispute Resolution and Mitigation and this lecture

was presented by ICE Malaysia Representative; Ir. Dr. Ooi Teik Aun. This lecture was also

delivered as the 19th Professor Chin Fung Memorial Lecture on 7th November 2009 after the

Official Opening Ceremony of the Auditorium Tan Sri Prof Chin Fung Kee, Wisma Institution

of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). Repeat lectures have been also given at Nottingham University

Malaysia Campus on 13th November 2009, Kuching on 20th November 2009, Kota Kinabalu on

21st November 2009 and Johor Bahru on 19th December 2009. This lecture is about to examines

the histories of geotechnical failures and identifies the engineers duties and responsibilities and

discussed the dispute resolution and mitigating measures. on geotechnical issues. About 40

students attended this lecture and this lecture was greatly benefited by them.

Aside from ICE Green Week 2010 Exhibition, there were other activities done in conjunction to

ICE Week. The activities are Geo Rocks Competition, Recycle Campaign, Float & Sink

Competition, Cup Arranging Competition and Parking Design Competition.

Geo Rocks Competition was held on Tuesday, 2nd

February 2010 in the afternoon at the

Geology Laboratory, UNITEN. Each groups of students will be given the basic description about

the rocks or minerals which are the pictures and the names. Then, each group will be given 10

minutes to memorize the name of the rocks or minerals. First, 10 type of rocks or minerals are

given to them. Members of the group need to label the rocks or minerals with name given and

the time given is about 3-5 minutes. If any failure to recognize the rocks or minerals within the

time given, hence 1 mark will be deducted. Each correct rocks or stones been labeled will be

awarded 1 mark each. The 2 group that earn highest points among the 4 groups will continue the

game for the second round. Now, 30 type of rocks or minerals of description are given. Members

of the group need to memorize it within 30 minutes. As usual, they need to recognize the correct

rocks or minerals within 12 minutes -15 minutes. At last, the best group will be the winner.

(Only the best group will be given prize).

The aim of this competition is to ensure that the future upcoming students in this civil

engineering field can easily recognize the rocks and minerals which are necessary for them to

know it so. Furthermore, this competition is opened for every course students and this is to

ensure that the students can interact and co-operate each other during the competition.

Recycle Campaign was held in each of students accommodations on 2nd

    and 3rd

    February

2010. It was started at 8pm and ended at 10pm. The purpose of this campaign is to give

awareness on the importance of Reuse, Recycle and Reduce or the materials or 3Rs to the

students. Moreover, this campaign also instill the awareness to students on how important it is

that we take care of our Mother Nature and make the recycling a habit. The collected recycle

materials were sent to the nearest recycle centre for charity at Seri Kembangan.

Float & Sink Competition was held on Wednesday, 3rd

February 2010 in the afternoon at the

Civil Engineering Laboratory UNITEN. Each groups of students will be given the basic

description about the competition & the rules & regulations. Each groups need to create a ship byusing the recycle materials provided. The overall length should be less than 35 cm (width), 50

cm (height) and 70cm (length). The ship model must be able to carry a minimum 30 N loading

block for at least 15 seconds during the test. Then, it will increase to 10 N continuously until to

the maximum of load. The best group will be the winner if the ship can stand for the heaviest

UNITEN ICE Student Chapter has invited the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus

(UNMC) Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Student Chapter Executive Members to visit

UNITEN which is one of the events of ICE Green Week 2010. The UNMC ICE Student Chapter

Executive Members arrived at UNITEN on 4th February 2010 at 9 am. They visited the ICE

Green Week 2010 exhibition area, the College of Engineering buildings, Civil Engineering

Laboratory and the UNITEN Administration Building. The purpose of this event is to foster a

closer relationship between UNITEN ICE Student Chapter and UNMC ICE Student Chapter.

Furthermore, during this visit, both ICE Student Chapters exchanged their point of views and

planned to organize a project together in the future.

On the same day, Cup Arranging Competition was organized at the front of the Geology

Laboratory at 4 pm. 100 cups will be provided to each groups. 10 min preparation time will be

given to each group to think about the arrangement of the structure. During the challenge, no

outside student nor the person in charge are allowed to help the contestant. Scissors and

cellophane tape are allowed in this challenge. Other outside materials are prohibited at all times.

Contestants will only be given 10 min to build the structural in the area of 1m x 1m x 1m area.

Penalty of marks reduction if the contestants who did not finish in time or their structural

building is over the specific required dimension of 1m x 1m x 1m.

Winner will be judge by it looks, using less materials (cups & cellophane tape ) and able to

withstand load. Finally, after the time is up, the structural will undergo a series of judgment.

Marks will be given by the person in charge and additional marks will be given if the structural

build by the contestants are able to withstand the load that will be placed at the end of the

challenge. The aim for this competition is to test the understanding of basic statics of the students

& to test the students awareness on the environment.

The last activity for the ICE Green Week 2010 is the Parking Design Competition. Participants

need to send their designs before the Closing Ceremony of ICE Green Week 2010 & the designs

is judged by the lecturers form the Civil Engineering Department. The purpose of this

competition is to cultivate participants creativity and problem solving skills. In addition,

students can contribute in giving our ideas to abate parking congestions in College of

Engineering. The original available parking lots in College of Engineering are 219. The winning

design was able to increase the capacity of parking lots by 71, which is approximately 30% more

    than the original design.
