The fluorescent (emergency) light enclosure base is glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) whilst the transparent parts are ultra-violet resistant polycarbonate, both materials having high chemical resistance and mechanical strength. When closed the two parts are held together by the special spanner-key operated interlocking device, so as to compress the seal and simultaneously operate the interlock switch to connect the power supply. The explosion-protected electronic ballast, isolation switch, lamp holder and terminals etc are mounted inside of the full plastic fluorescent light fittings. There are two types of fluorescent light fittings - general one and emergency one. The fluorescent emergency light fitting has a battery for temporary backup. When the power supply to the installed light is normal the lamp is energised from the mains and the battery is fed by the charging circuit. When the power fails, the lamp is energised from the battery until either the power is restored or the battery is discharged..
