Editorial Comment and Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to the first edition of Tenby

Setia Eco-Park student magazine. We hope to

offer you an exciting range of articles and re-

views, with contributors from across our two

schools, including from the lunchtime creative

writing club. If all goes well—and with your sup-

port— we will publish an online version of the

editorial team’s selection each term.

In this issue: we have some regular columns, first

for fashion, from Wan Yi, with a focus on what

was popular this summer. A fantabulous fea-

ture for the fashionistas among you. Our art

column this month gives you the low-down on

Picasso’s biggest ‘hits’ - the most extravagant

and lavish paintings in the world.

Our features include reviews of Year 10 Work

Experience (but first, lemme take a selfie),

the Summer Drama production—The final and

foremost production with the legendary Law-

rence—and a guide to the best cafes in Pub-

likka—A Wondermilk tour (a.k.a. free adver-

tising!).

We also have a quick peak at what’s been go-

ing down on-line lately for all you gamesters

and a focus on what makes photography work

from our Secondary Schools competition win-

ner, Amir Gregson. (How to take selfies like a

pro).

Life would never be complete without a bit of

healthy debate: we hear from Vishnu Vijandran

about one of the key debates for the Children’s

Fund committee. We also have a round-up of

the latest trends in cartoons—with Luciana and

Raisa—a never-before-seen combination of

science fiction, fantasy, and 19th century

steam-powered machines. Followed by a

lengthy list of the top 5 anime of all time, ac-

cording to our resident anime geek.

We hope you will enjoy this issue and will contin-

ue to support our student magazine. And last

but not least, if any of you would like to contrib-

ute, please join our lunchtime club or email me

with your articles for next issue at:

Next Issue: coming up December 2015!!!!!

This summer calls for a fresh new look ready

for days spent lazing by the beaches, sipping

that cooling drink and looking au courant!

Firstly, you don’t need the perfect bikini

body to look amazing in your swimsuit, nei-

ther do you need that perfect golden tan.

This summer is all about finding an outfit

that brings out the best in you.

1Contrasting Colours________

The perfect summer outfit goes miles when

you explore with colours that pop against

your skin. If you have skin with cool under-

tones, pinks and blues will stand out against

your peachy skin. For skin with warm under-

tones, deep oranges, greens and reds will

stand out wonderfully!

2Beach Waves, Blonde or Both?

Summer isn't all about achieving golden

blonde locks. Brunettes or raven haired la-

dies can still afford to look gorgeous under

the sun. Curl your hair to achieve the large

beach waves that give the effect of being

blown away by the sea breeze!

3Sun-kissed Skin__________

A simple and easy trick to play up your com-

plexion to achieve this longed-for look is

bronzer! You’ll want to find a shade about

two tones darker than your original skin

tone. Simply sweep the product over the ap-

ples of your cheeks, hairline and chin. Pair

the look with a coral lip and you’re ready to

go!

Most importantly, keep in mind what you

like and what you’re comfortable with wear-

ing. Once you’re up for it, go that extra mile

and try something new!

SIZZLING

...tapping the end of his baton on his music stand for emphasis. It’s a call to attention

that every musician in the band is accustomed to, and the band members are poised,

bow in hand and fingers splayed over keys, ready to perform. It is six o’ clock, the start of

the band’s sound check- and it is also fifteen minutes until show time.

This year’s production- A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream- is one of Shakespeare’s most fa-

mous comedies. The story revolves around four young people named Lysander, Hermia,

Demetrius and Helena. They get caught up in a mixed romantic relationship with each

other as Lysander and Demetrius love Hermia, who loves Lysander, whereas Helena loves

Demetrius. Lysander

and Hermia elope to

the forest one night,

to escape Athens

where they would

not be able to marry.

The other two pur-

sue them. Mean-

while, the fairy king

and queen are argu-

ing, and the world is

thrown into discord. Puck, the fairy king’s servant, finding the lovers, plays tricks on

them, creating chaos between the four. The play is full of humour, a talking donkey, and

even a happy ending.

It is the last night of the play, and the air is full of nervous tension- everybody wants the

last show to end with a flourish. There are four consecutive performances this year, from

the 30th of June to the 3rd of July. The whole auditorium has been transformed- faux

grass has replaced the wooden floors, and a backdrop of a forest hangs from both sides

of the hall.

At six thirty, the audience are seated, the lights dimmed, and the play begins with a dance

from the fairies. The whole story unfolds in front of everyone’s eyes, the audience en-

tranced by the play and the music. Their silence then turns into laughs as the ever-so fa-

mous talking donkey makes her appearance, the sounds of a comical donkey’s neigh pre-

sent throughout half of the play. More highlights of the night follow: an intense argument

between the fairy king and queen, the “Most Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death

of Pyramus and Thisbee”- a very good piece of work, I assure you- and the overall rivalry

between Demetrius and Lysander over both Helena and Hermia in the story keeps the au-

dience glued to the action onstage.

At eight thirty, the play ends with Puck’s famous monologue, and the theatregoers erupt

into cheers when the Mission Impossible theme is played as the cast take their bows. Con-

fetti showers the left and right side of the auditorium, as the band shoot confetti from the

twenty or so confetti cannons in their possession. Awards are given out to some outstand-

ing performers, and the cast, crew and audience bid a fond farewell to Mrs Lawrence, who

sadly will not be in teaching in Tenby next year. Everybody leaves after the awards cere-

mony, exhausted and exhilarated, as though the last four days were not reality- just a

dream.

Dora Maar au Chat $95.2 million This painting of Picasso’s lover, Dora Maar, is one of the many portraits that he painted of her during the course of their relationship. It was only discovered after his death and was authenticated by Picasso’s daughter herself. Maar is regarded as one of Picasso’s favourite models and she was a tremendous influence in his life.

When talking about an artist with an astonishing reputation

like Picasso, it’s unsurprising when you discover that his art-

works have net worths of millions of dollars. This prolific artist

is known for his wide array of paintings, drawings, ceramics,

sculptures and contributions to the world of cubism and surre-

alism. Only recently did one of his works break the world rec-

ord for the most expensive painting ever auctioned. So which

works is all the fuss about? Read on…

Garçon à la pipe $104.1 million The Parisian boy in the painting is painted holding a pipe and with a garland of flowers on the top of his head. This was painted during Picasso’s Rose Period, which makes the garland quite fitting! Though it has been resold a few times, many art critics were surprised to see that this painting was sold for its price as it has very little historical importance or value.

Lady, Green Leaves and Statue $106.5 million Painted in 1932, the painting features the artist’s friend, Marie-Therese Walter by some green leaves and a statue-like man. The canvas, measuring more than 5 feet tall, is currently being displayed at the Tate Modern in London.

Le Rêve $155 million Another famous piece of Marie-Therese Walter, Picasso

frequently depicts her with bright and vibrant colours like

in this painting instead of the gloomy and dark shades he

associates with Dora Maar. Its qualities are said to show

early signs of fauvism. This masterpiece is rumoured to

have been painted in a single afternoon.

Les Femmes d’ Alger (Version “O”) $179.4 million

Only recently did this painting break the record for the

most expensive Picasso to ever have been sold! Like Gar-

çon à la pipe, it has not much historical importance but it

was sold at an absurd amount anyway. Les Femmes d’ Al-

ger is a series of 15 paintings in the style of cubism. About

half have been auctioned off and are displayed so that the

public may enjoy the works of this phenomenal man who

once lived and brought mankind the gift of his art.

YOUTUBE GAMING

In this diverse era, gaming has evolved into a

whole new level, with tens of thousands of

game streamers and broadcasters entertain-

ing people with jokes, drama and what not.

With 20 billion minutes of content watched

every month-Twitch, the most well-known

website for streaming has a competitor!?

Youtube, a splendid platform for content creators, large and small to

share and watch videos; with a might in monetisation, has captivated

the hearts of many people, keeping them there. However, viewers

aren’t able to watch live gaming content, therefore comes, Youtube

gaming; a one stop destination for all gaming content in the world.

Youtube gaming launches fully later this year, while Twitch has also decided to up its game to rival against this new kid in town. Now, both stream services must convince the best gamers to broadcast on their site and not the other.

Will Twitch or Youtube gaming come out top? The victor is still any-

ones guess, but for now lets just anticipate how this exciting show-

down goes.

Steampunk fashion is usually a mixture between

the Victorian era’s romantic view of science in liter-

ature and elements from the Industrial Revolution

in Europe during the 1800s. The fashion consist of

clothing, hairstyling, jewellery and make up. It

often attracts people who are into gothic fashion

as well.

Steampunk refers to a subgenre in literature of sci-

ence fiction and sometimes fantasy, which incorpo-

rates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by

19th century industrial steam powered machinery. It

has developed into a subculture of art and fashion,

attracting people of all backgrounds, who are inter-

ested in things such as science fiction and the Victo-

rian era in general.

The black bitterness;

This pungent smell ,

I know it all too well.

The iron metal;

These grinding gears,

I can hear the screeches with my ears.

Ticking of ambition;

These peasants screaming “Full steam ahead!”

This is Victorian London, where low-class works till dead.

Book Review Mortal Engines is the first of four novels in Philip

Reeve’s quartet of the same name. The book focus-

es on a futuristic, steampunk version of London, now a gi-

ant machine striving to survive on a world running out of

resources. Hundreds of years after the apocalyptic “Sixty-

Minute War”, it has returned to a Victorian-era society and

technological state. The book has been recommended for

those seeking to venture into the steampunk genre for the

first time, and has many shining reviews. “Where Charles

At first, we had no plans of where to go, but when we wandered around and spotted this café it really stood out to us. The interior was inspired by a mod-

ern vintage concept. With hanging lightbulbs and mismatched chairs, it gives off a chill atmosphere to the customers. The bestselling coffee with the fancy

name ‘cool cube’ was a pleasant drink, thoughtoo pricy for us to enjoy without our purses crying. The carbonara spaghetti was the highlight of the meal. The ham and mushroom harmonized perfectly to-gether with the not-too-thick sauce. The soft and

smooth texture of the Crème Brulee melted in our mouths and the strawberry on top of the dessert made it even more refreshing. The green tea latte

with a hint of cinnamon, was very suitable for cinna-mon-lovers. The overall presentation of the food

was lovely.

Not only Publika, but many other shopping malls all over Malaysia have a variety of pleasurable cafes which

customers from different generations can visit and enjoy themselves with delectable meals, cooling beverages and

sweet-smelling desserts. Just go to any shopping mall and pay more attention to the shops you are walking past.

You will be shocked at how ignorant you were and now it’s your turn to go for a local cafe tour!

The design of this unique and exquisite cafe is based on librar-ies, hence the name. The whole cafe gives of an extremely cozy and comfortable vibe, especially the section closed off by book-shelves, save a small opening at the side. Despite the wonderful interior, the food and drinks served were just average. The de-sert we ordered however, had an exceptionally appetising ap-

pearance, and the taste of the waffle didn't disappoint. The wait- ers in this cafe were friendlier com-pared to the others as well.

We did it! We went to work experience from 22 June- 26 June. It was fun for most

of us, both interesting and exciting to see the behind scenes of a successful shop or

work-place but fitting into a professional team is hard work too. Some may have

worked for long hours to do what their ‘colleagues’ were finishing... Some may on-

ly have been engaged for 4-5 hours each day. But for all involved, gaining work ex-

perience was important to prepare and plan for our futures. It has also helped us

to put in context the qualifications needed so after we graduate we find good and

profitable jobs. These are some students’ work places and experience they gained:

Naoka-Business

Joshua Guo

I helped out my dad’s company by managing the tech-

nical parts of security, starting at 9.30 and going on until

6 pm everyday for that week. I did quotations for clients,

who had questions about the company. Then I would

pass on the questions to a colleague with better under-

standing. I enjoyed the fact that I had to work in a com-

fortable environment.

Alexey

I helped out in a shoe shop in the accounting and marketing

departments. I did filing, for customers paying by cheque,

then stock-taking and tracking what stock was selling well.

I’d worked in a team with the whole department and when I

asked they always had time to answer. I produced a lot of

work but they were really busy (not much time to show me

round the whole business).

Eve

I worked as a nurse at a clinic located at Subang Jaya. I worked in and learnt about

5 different sections for the 5 days I was there The first section that I started with

was as a receptionist, then I went on to filling and accounting, on the third day I was

working with customer services and on the fourth day I helped clean the apparatus

in the clinic. My favourite section was helping out with medicine prescriptions

which was the last but most valuable section of my work experience.

Lydia

I worked at my friend’s parent’s legal firm and got a grip of all the different

tasks of working in this field. Examples are answering phone calls with clients,

filling and re-ordering, conveyance for the financing aspect and transferring

files. My favourite part of this work experience was the fact that I had the

chance to try this with my friend and had not gone alone.

WanYi

I worked with a couple of different personnel/departments: using Illustrator,

Photoshop for design of adverts but focussing on the copy-writing side of

things (how adverts are written) before being shown around corporate

affairs by the main boss at the company, Mr Chris. Working in a small office

gave a good sense of how all the staff work together to produce top-quality

ads for print and internet.

How does debate work?

During the inaugural Tenby Kuala Lumpur Model United Nations, one of the agen-

das was the UNICEF committee for the rights of children. There was quite a strong

debate about this, with Afghanistan, Iraq, Antigua and Barbuda, Burkina Faso,

and Somalia drafting a resolution against changing the bill of rights of young peo-

ple, due to the religious morality of those societies , and most other countries

drafting a resolution for acknowledging new medical advances. By the end of

our debates, the resolution for had passed with flying colours, whereas the resolu-

tion against was thrown out with very few votes for.

Our debate was worth having because it taught all of us the importance of medi-

cal and identity issues on a global scale, what our beliefs are based on and how

the Model United Nations functions.
